In my professional piano career, I had 2 types of teachers/professors: the ones that wanted always more tension and more (in the music of course) leading to bilateral tendinitis in my poor hands. And the other type of teacher spoke about "everything is loose", and indeed there are some piano students with incredibly loose hands and who also have a lot of patience, and that's why they manage to play everything... Now, some decades later, I found that the crucial part is to allocate in the notes and fingerings directly the change of tension and relaxation, in every bar, so that respiration can start to happen, inhale and exhale...

Con paciencia y fuerza de voluntad todo se alcanza. Es imprescindible también un buen profesor, que te guíe. Hay profesores de todo tipo al igual que alumnos. Tú mismo lo dijiste, con el ejemplo de aquel profesor que daba por perdida a una alumna. No sólo basta un profesor que sepa, también que quiera transmitir sus conocimientos. Desde luego tú estás en el top, tanto como pianista como profesor.

I studied Hindustani music, and while I never read any theory, that tension/release is present, even though not in the sense of moving diatonic harmony. With the drone, every note of a melody in the characteristic strophic forms will either contrast or resolve with it.

It’s very good you are not sure! As soon as one becomes so sure about such subjective and constantly changing trends, they’d better stop teaching and playing. Never happens though! Just the opposite…
