Killer show; excellent sonics, fantastic playing by all involved; and imaginative camera work & visuals. Indispensable addition to the Terje Rypdal canon. Thanks for posting this.......!

Thanks, I agrree. Superb by the NRK to put it on their web. This TV show lifted Odyssey up so they played concert halls after this.

... and not only concert halls but clubs too. That's why I saw them between 76 - 78 two times in Germany / Goettingen @ a club called Center aka Podium (a cool disco with progressive music from several DJs and a great live jazz program). Always a big pleasure !!! Watching this Molde show, it still sounds so marvellous timeless.

Brynjulf, do you still remember Göttingen/Germany? What are you doing today, and are you still in touch with Terje and Sveinung?

We were touring Germany a lot, and I do remember many names and places. But not neccessarily both... I see Sveinung, We live in the same area a couple of hours outside Oslo. Have even played together a few times lately.

Saw this same band in 76 in SF Cal they were loud and intense and blew everyone away. People were yelling and screaming. This brought back some great memories. One of the best concerts I've been to.

Wow! Wonderful music from a great musician. Terje is a true original and his playing/compositions instantly recognisable. He deserves the same kind of adulation as the likes of John McLaughlin. Perhaps one day more folk will realise just how good Rypdal is. A great upload-thank you!

Used to listen to these guys on ECM back in the 70s, Rypdal, Arild Andersen, Jan Garbarek, Eberhard Weber et al. Moving Down Under in 81 curbed my access to music like this 😕 Lovely to rediscover them in this digital venue! The time machine ....

What's making This Show Remarkable, is that The ALBUM "Odyssey" wasn't recorded until the August to come (End of Festival Season's most busy Part), so this is a Presentation of All brand New Material from an Album to Come with the Original Line-Up, that changed sometime in 1976 with Trombonist Torbjörn Sunde left the Band, and Drummer Svein "Crico" Kristiansen was replaced by Jon Christensen, (that also was the Drummer of Keith Jarrett's European Quartet and Eberhard Weber's "Colours" at the Time!) I saw "Odyssey" back in the Summer of 1976; the First Jazz-Concert I'd Attended at the age of 15. The Venue had a 20-Year age-limit! (I was "Mature-Looking" for my age, and it was on a Wednesday. :-D )

Thanks for info, but I dont agree 100%. Odyssey as a band split at the end of -76. In early -77 Terje Rypdal Group saw the light, with Mikkelborg, Christensen and Hovensjø. A year later keyboardist Graf joined in.

@@earospace I saw the Odyssey band in March 4th, 1976 in Göttingen (Germany). I do remember that they have performed without trombonist Torbjörn Sunde. Just a four-piece incl. Sveinung, Jon Christensen and probably Brynjulf Blix. I've recorded some parts of the concert, especially the tune "Midnite" (I had written it on the inlay card of the cassette case). Still have my original BASF-tape!!! Think I better should digitalize it ... ;)

I wanted to write a comment but saw that Greg Taylor already has said nearly all I wanted to say... Nevertheless: Rypdal, in my opinion and according to my taste, is surely one of the greatest greats in free musical exploration in the 70s. And, what's also important - not boring, too. A pure joy to listen to!

It's a a Fender Bass VI six string bass tuned one octave below the standard guitar tuning of EADGBE. The higher end of this instrument reaches easily into guitar range with distortion and echo like he uses here. Fender recently reissues the Bass VI and I got to play one at a local store - it's a pretty interesting instrument - completely different than the later six string basses that came out in the 80s using low to high BEAGDC.
