The first two Terminator movies were some of the most beloved sci-fi action movies of all time. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and James Cameron brought us an exciting world involving killer robots, time travel and a whole lot of running around. Ever since then, Hollywood has been trying to breathe new life into the franchise and make some money off of it. Now James, Arnold and Linda are all back to take matters into their own hands.
Terminator: Dark Fate definitely raises a lot of questions. Like why kill off John Connor only to bring back someone with the exact same function as him? Why are these new machines also called Terminators? Why didn’t “Legion” send them back to before people had access to advanced weaponry to defend themselves? What the heck’s going on with Carl?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Terminator: Dark Fate! It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience!

I accept everything as canon, even Sarah Connor Chronicles. Every time someone time travels the timeline is radically altered, each movie could be a new shard fragmented of the original timeline, and by the time you get to Genesys and Dark Fate they've fucked with local spacetime so much the universe is breaking down and creating all kinds if weird errors and paradoxes like people remembering multiple timelines and terminators appearing from aborted universes to eliminate targets that are already dead.

There actually is a reason that I can think of. If you remember in the first two films, the terminators needed to use phone books, police scanners etc to even find the correct Sarah/John Connor. If there weren’t still Terminators from the original (now deleted) timeline, then there couldn’t be a John Connor to kill. If the future they prevented never happened, then Reese was never sent back in time to get Sarah knocked up, so the events of the first movie never happened. And if the first movie never happened, then Dyson wouldn’t have had a Terminator CPU to study inT2, which lead to the creation of SkyNet, so the second movie never happened. The best you can say is that the events of T2 caused a timeline split, so Dark Fate is on the timeline that branched off due to T2, but the SkyNet future still exists in another branch. Which also means that if SkyNet sends a Terminator back to before the timeline split, versions of that Terminator will be in both timelines. So we could have both SkyNet and Legion sending Terminators back to before the split so their respective Terminator armies can lay dormant until they activate in the other timeline’s future, each joining forces with the two human resistances (temporarily, at least) to destroy their AI rival before launching their own bids to exterminate humanity on both timelines.

As much as I love the first two Terminators, this is precisely why you set yourself up for failure if there's even a remote possibility for future sequels by using this version of time travel. The only way to avoid irreconcilable paradoxes is if you either don't get too into the weeds about the mechanics of it (like the first two movies did) and or be extremely careful to pay attention to detail when constructing the plot of the sequels so you don't completely explode any and all sense of continuity. The alternate universe version of time travel like what Avengers: Endgame and every Marvel Comics story in general used (at least the classic stuff) is probably the easiest way to make time travel an integral and active element of the plot without turning the continuity into complete nonsense because whatever happens happens. There's no erasong things and no pardoxes, just alternate universes that are created with each change to the past.
@LordOfBagels117
@LordOfBagels117 4 жыл бұрын
I hate time travel being used as a serious plot device. I hate it SO much. It only ever makes sense when its used in a "stable time loop" sense that doesn't screw over the entire timeline, or create alternate timelines that intersect which opens up a whole different set of problems like how do different timelines intersect in the first place and more importantly if multiverse theory is in play how does said time traveler intend to get back to their own timeline, or can they even do that if they changed things because changing things to prevent other things if it works then negates the need to travel back and change things in the first place and GODDAMNIT I HATE TIME TRAVEL @$?$%#&#*€#%÷×#&$/,:%$)&?!
@kohl1999
@kohl1999 4 жыл бұрын
@@LordOfBagels117 Very well said. I also despise time travel as a plot device because of the obvious paradoxes and the fact it is just a crutch for writers who cannot think creatively. They could still help somewhat the good guy original T2's T800 if the manage to sneak in some notion that at some point someone did that thing they did in T2 of tweaking some chip so T2 could learn or be reprogrammed. Or maybe even better, tweak a bit the original T2 with someone sneaking in from another timeline and switching that T800 from that timeline, replacing it with another with a different program, not have the T800 that killed Connor being him, but another unit that maybe he even killed himself later as perhaps some bug in time travel detection/date-positioning or something. Nearly whatever goes away with the killing machine roaming around and evolving into a better person spontaneously without any tweak in its hardwire would do it.
