Cassowaries are often referred to as “dinosaur birds”. In fact, these astonishing avians are descended from theropods, the only dinosaurs to survive extinction. Since then, they’ve swapped their ability to fly for running speeds of 50 km/h and some pretty vicious-looking claws …
But is meeting a wild cassowary really like stepping into Jurassic Park? Producer Eva goes in search of the facts and learns some surprising details about these imposing birds, from their ancestry to unusual parenting style.
Find out about even more fascinating wildlife - subscribe to our channel so you never miss out!

Like sharks and big cats these are very powerful wild animals that should be admired and respected from a safe distance and generally left alone. They aren't malicious.

I love cassowaries it's been so frustrating having them labelled as the most dangerous bird. The actual information on them suggests that just like in the video example you're more likely to get hurt by a household pet. Ostriches are dangerous and have could kill too, but you don't see us acting like they're the spawn of Satan. I really hope we don't have another Jaws situation.

Played Far Cry 3, had no clue about this bird. While I was in their territory in game, and my health kept getting low, but turned around only to see the birds and dismiss it as game glitch but oh boy did I learn my lesson as these guys literally hunted me in game while I’m trying to be stealthy.

Cassowaries r awesome. I couldn't imagine getting attacked by one of those, I've been attacked by a rooster and that wasn't exactly a good time, I have a wild turkey that comes and eats out of my hand, their beaks r much smaller but can still hurt when they get some skin. Thanks for another great video Terra Mater

The movie mislead what "velociraptors" were (much smaller animals than shown). In the movie, they use the Dinonico built (as in the book) but using the "more commercial" name from the Velociraptor.

Well, the cassowaries' look isn't a left-over from the non-aviary dinosaurs. 66 million years ago, cassowaries looked similar to ravens.
