Doing self deprecating humor is great because if you do it enough it goes from *”Hyperbolize something I don’t like about myself for the sake of comedy”* to *”I may be internalizing those things but it’s still funny”* to *”Those things are way too real now so I’ve to keep making jokes about them or I’ll have to confront them”* to finally *”things I 100% think about myself but said in the general tone of voice you would use for a joke, so hopefully somebody confuses it as such”* And isn’t that fun?

As ZiggyThe assassin said, we only have parasocial connections with KZfaqrs. We're in no way close or knowledgable of the people enough to understand what they could or could not be going through and who they even are as people. It's dangerous to feel so connected to people who you don't really know beyond a single paper thin facet that they deliberately show you. The Beginner's Guide, I feel, kind of illustrates this idea really well (along with illustrating the fact that we can never know authorial intent, which is incredibly meta, cause that means I can't say that it was made to illustrate the fact that we never know authorial intent, which is a bit of a maze).

Unexpectedness is a large part of humour. The problem with "lol random" is that the random thing isn't quite as random as comedic writer thinks it is, usually depending on connotations related to the word "random" or other "lol random" jokes. AI generated comedy is extremely "lol random" but it is usually is hilarious because nobody in their right mind would think what the bots put out. There's also tone that plays a part.

The letter V!!!" about the only response I've gotten is "They have long winters where you live, don't they." Now you tell me there are groups who tell each other math jokes? As someone coming across this theory for the first time I have two thoughts: First, "those have to be very small echo chambers." and second, "Cool!" Replaying The Wizard of Oz in my mind, I now hear "Isosceles." The joke is A = 2A, which is only true for A = 0, so he has a point. PS I know some meth jokes. they live down the street.

The irony of some people here taking jabs at the average youtube commenter as the take away from this video is amazing. A point brought up in this video was that humor is subjective, and that if people don't find your jokes funny, then they aren't the problem. The vice-versa is also true. If you don't find jokes funny and other people do then it doesn't mean your sense of humor is superior. Most people find the jokes funny, that's why they get upvoted, and hence they are funny. Thinking of the average person's sense of humor as inferior is a surefire way to fail in comedy writing.

@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 I can't nor agree 100% with either one comment or the other. Opinions have a certain value. There are jokes better than others. That doesn't mean that everyone has to like your jokes even if they are great. You can't please everyone, each one has certain tastes. What will happen is that, depending on both the publics' preferences and your ability to tell jokes, they will laugh more, or less, or maybe won't laugh at all. Sometimes it is difficult for some people to fully enjoy English humor because of its subtlety. It doesn't mean they don't get it. Maybe they don't laugh as much and prefer a more direct and more evident kind of humor. That doesn't mean that just random farts will always do the job. However, there are people who laugh at that. Better said, you should check your target to know what kind of humor best fits your style and is more effective for you.

The trick to jokes about racism in modern day is that the joke is on the act of racism not on the person. The absurdity of being racist is easy to focus on and you can just dial up the absurdity to suit your needs. Say you're being heckled by someone with darker skin than you. Making the comeback of "My skin's lighter than yours so that makes me the better person." Is such an absurd statement that you can't take it seriously. And you can just keep dialing up the absurdity by being ever more literal with the statements. Its also easy to keep your targets varied by leaning into the "but who is actually white" argument. If you do it right you can argue against every European ethnic group's inclusion into who is white. Primarily because grouping people by skin color is an mostly an american invention and until recently, historically recently, a person's race was synonymous with their ethnic group.

Agreed, JP! As we all know, humor is the same for everyone! It having clear rules and restrictions on what and who can be made fun of and all, equivalent to a high school geometry book. @@zack-ronald259 I think the oringinal comment was making fun of JP because: JP claimed what people find funny is subjective (there is no objective humour), but then going on to moralise about what jokes should be made, who should be made fun of, and what true commedy actually is (all of these are objective claims about humour). He may also be making the point that (although JP did advocate for some middle ground) JP is playing it too safe (and ironically) playing into the hands of what the current establishment deems to be (un)funny. (This would mean he rejects JPs claim to be on the middle ground - as false). At least I think thats what Eddie's point was. That said take this explanation with a grain of salt. I find it hard to follow when someone responds to someones satire with their own satire.

Do “How not to write Alternate Histories!” JP: You could talk about the complex politics of an alternate world, you could explore the lore and differing philosophies of these alternate societies, or you could stay in one country the entire show, never explore the world, and make sure an awkward love triangle hijacks the entire plot! Lol random can be used quite well, if you prime the audience with a good tone and setting that thrives on it. You people confuse random with surreal, random is something happens just because, no context, no meaning, a chicken burning from no where is random any person with half brain can write it; surreal is something that happens in a unconventional way but still making sense, and still having a meaning and context that's why is called Jojo BIZZARE adventure, surrealism is hard to write; people that say LOL so random half of the time is just having a hard time getting the point, and of course if they don't get it, it is the show's fault.

Remember, the joke is ALWAYS worth more than consistent characterization! If you have the idea for a joke but it would require one or more of your characters to act horribly out of character - giving the readers whiplash and completely drawing them out of the story in the process - you HAVE to do it. The joke is obviously just SO funny that it should be a higher priority then anything else in the story! I'm sure that'll work out fine.
