A little primer on Tesla Coils and then we build a Mini Slayer Exciter coil from a kit and have some fun. I forgot to mention in the video, If you build oone of these kits, DO NOT TOUCH the spark at the end of the electrode. It can give you a very nasty RF burn!!

Tesla coils are so much fun. I built one in the mid-1960s when I was in the seventh grade. I fed it with an Armstrong oscillator using a 6V6 vacuum tube. The output coil was an old television high-voltage transformer of the kind they used before there were flybacks. It was just an air-core step-up transformer that had a third winding that was the tickler for the Armstrong circuit. I think I got about 30 kV out of it. I also acquired an old oil burner transformer that put out about 10 kV. I was going to use it to build a larger Tesla coil but my father put the kibosh on that, so I mostly just used it to set things on fire. Sometimes I'm amazed that I survived my childhood.

4:47 I think you got this wrong. The transformer doesn't drive the spark gap, the capacitor does when it charges to a high enough voltage. The voltage charges the capacitor. When the capacitor charges to a high enough voltage, it then discharges from the spark gap which dumps all the charge through the inductor. That is what drives the secondary coil on the tower.

Does the torus need to be a specific size or would the coil throw out atleast a certain amount of spark irrespective of torus size?

referring to 5:08, when the gap sparks the 6kV transformer has the secondary in short circuit. Is not this to be avoid, always?

Interesting little project. Just a thought, as it produces RF, does it completely swamp the broadcast band with noise?
@stevec5000
@stevec5000 6 жыл бұрын
No, a spark gap produces a wide range of noise but this circuit has a transistor oscillator running at just one frequency so it would only put out the fundamental frequency plus the 2nd and 3rd harmonics. This circuit is more like the high voltage circuit in a picture tube tv than a traditional Tesla coil. While it might not produce much interference I wouldn't take a chance by connecting my phone to it without an isolation transformer though.

I may try this kit, looks interesting. I'm curious how much voltage is being generated from the secondary?
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb 6 жыл бұрын
It's several thousand volts at very low current. Although the shock hazard is relatively low, the spark at the end of the output terminal is very hot and will burn you if you directly touch it. Also, if you come too close to any RF signal (i.e. touching the antenna element), you could receive an RF burn that is very painful and takes a long time to heal. Other than the little blue spark, this device is pretty safe.

no you should just do what i did its 14.1v input to this system. motor speed controller, 8-60v adjustable voltage booster feeding a 1.2kw zvs driver, driving a flyback from a 56in box tv. yup the fly back in toughs are able to get 100kv with 6 turns as a three pin primary. then that will have a safety spark gap going to the older style Tesla circuit. but with one big difference the coils its self will be 2 on the primary and 102 on the secondary with 1in diameter 1foot tall and the primary is a 2in diameter with 1in spacing 3in tall its a 51x multiplier tesla coil

Can you explain how this works when the AC mains are changing polarity? It is described as if you are talking DC. I can't find a good explanation of how AC changes the spark gap action.

I think he got this wrong....It's not the first xfrmer that causes the spark gap. The first xfrmr charges the capacitor. When the capacitor charges to a high voltage it eventually gets to a high enough voltage that the arc can jump across the spark gap. This dumps the charge to the primary coiil.

why we must take a spark gap? what'll happend ,if i take a high resistance inspite of spark gap?
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb 4 жыл бұрын
The spark gap acts as a high voltage switch. As potential builds up during the charging of the capacitor, the spark gap acts as an insulator, i.e. the switch is "turned off". When the cap charges up, the potential gets high enough to draw an arc. The arc acts as a short circuit, i.e. the switch is "turned on". When the capacitor discharges into the primary coil, the voltage drops until it can no longer maintain the arc. The cap will then begin to recharge and the process repeats itself. This is what makes the (somewhat) regular pulses into the primary coil that drives the resonant transformer.

Isn't it interesting how the schematic for a spark gap Tesla coil is exactly the same as a spark gap transmitter from the same period? I'm not saying one copied the other but coils, capacitors and spark gaps were all they had to work with back then. Tesla didn't invent the spark gap transmitter but was probably the biggest con artist of his time and modified it for his own use by adding the resonant step up coil on the output instead of connecting to an antenna.

if tried my ass off to make tesla coils... and i've tried ALL the different schematics ive find online.. and this one is one of those that do not work... and i don't know why... i get a spark over my spark gap of 3mm. (if you take 3mil volts per meter break down voltage to millimeter) u will get 3mm*3000=9000volts across my spark gap... and no matter WHAT i repeat NO MATTER WHAT capacitor i put in there in series AFTER my gap to primary windings, do i get higher outputs... I don't even get a spark from tesla coil to my finger at even dead bolt range, against the coil itself... so how you people do this shit is beyond me....tuned my spark gap with each different capacitor i put in... NOTHING works... the only way my tesla coil amplifies my voltage is if i put a full bridge rectifier in parallel with the capacitor in series with the spark gap in series with the primary.... these spark gap capacitor driven tesla coils don't do shit for me....... so how you people do it i dont know. please help me.
