The utility company I work for just tied 350MWH worth of Tesla battery storage and not one mention of Tesla. Most people in my company think of Tesla as a car company even after spending millions on battery projects. These projects are extremely large and require large amounts of cash. The revenue from battery storage will be inconsistent because I believe Tesla has to wait for the project to be finalized before posting the revenue.

Yes, forward earnings as some of the projects require 2 years. This has been ongoing, for years already. We should keep in mind the large expansion of battery lines Tesla has ongoing to including a 'Giga factory' under construction just started this year for Batts., in China where they already use 2Xs the electricity as the U.S. with plans for much more. Including plans for a new Dam 2Xs+ the 3 Gorges Dam. Storage is about to get REAL!..... real quick. At 2Xs 2023 6 Gigs =12,,, we are talking near the nets on RVs. 2025 for sure, 2026 should be 36-48 Gigs!

Sam Tesla currently makes no utility level batteries in China, factory in China is not complete yet. All of Tesla's current utility level battery systems are made in Lathrop California. The large jump in deployment numbers is a little deceptive as Tesla stores the units in large numbers waiting for the customers to have the sites ready so that when the site is ready the battery can be installed immediately and not placed in some parking lot for months. Tesla will have double the production capacity in the next 12 months and hopefully get battery facilities in Australia and Europe to reduce shipping and import fees. (not Germany this time though 🙃

The batteries are assembled into packs there. But the primary component of that pack is LFP prismatic battery cells made in China. The important point to grasp is that the RECURRING income from profit sharing with the energy providers and from pricing arbitrage can only grow exponentially as more and more Megapacks are added to the the Tesla battery ‘fleet’ every quarter, layer upon layer. Tesla's energy deployment figures will remain lumpy for a while, this record shows the Lathrop factory is producing at itrs max capacity of 40Gwh per year.. Not every quarter Tesla will deploy 9.4Gwh, it depends on which project comes online during that quarter. Tesla may produce and deliver megapacks on site, but as long it is not turned on, it will not be counted as Gwh deployed. From the megapack site at Giga Texas we know it can take several quarters before such a project comes online. It took Texas 6+ months after all megapacks were delivered before starting to contribute to the grid. With only one factory porducing Megapacks, this will remain lumpy untill more Mega pack factories come online and the number of projects coming online are increasing and start to be more consistent quarter to quarter.. So, however I agree with you that these big battery deliveries will increase (not only from Tesla) I do not think we will see another record quarter in Q3 or even Q4.. Tesla is right now production capacity constrained, demand will not be the issue the coming decade.

Yes, and no. You would need 3 Powerwalls to have the capacity to charge 1 EV. You would need a very large array of solar panels to charge the Powerwalls. The investment cost for homeowners isn’t practical. If your power company offers net metering, there’s zero reason to have home batteries.

@@philipdamask2279 To be pedantic, that is not true. If an existing power plant is producing too much electricity during off-peak-demand times and not enough electricity during peak-demand times, then some of the excess electricity during the off-peak-demand times could be used to recharge the batteries, and these batteries could then be discharged during the peak-demand times. In the case where solar/wind power stations are being built along with batteries for them then, according to videos on the Tony Seba channel, the cost of building such new stuff is now cheaper than continuing to run existing fossil fuel-based power stations.

Prismatic LFP’s currently trade around 30 - 32$ per kWh for 100 MWh quantities DDP in EU. 48 $ is when you buy in small quantities. It’s pretty much game over for most of the other chemistries for the next few years. If you are happy with recycled and low grade LFP’s then they can be bought EXW In China for 14-18 $ per kWh. Total cost of materials today for LFP battery without assembly is around 20-22$ per kWh and it is falling at least 30% before the end of 2025. In the next few years battery costs will become irrelevant and all other costs like inverter, BMS, cooling, case, safety systems are going to matter much more.

Of course batteries will be cheaper in 2040. Even decades ago it was cheaper to build pumped hydro energy storage to store the unused power the coal and nuclear plants keep producing at night than adding power plants to cover for the peak demand times during day, and the cost of coal and nuclear power has only gone up while energy storage has become cheaper. The claim that only renewables need energy storage is a blatant lie. Also, to have a nuclear power plant ready to open in 2040 you needed to start your project in 2020 or even earlier and simply building it costs ten to twelve billion dollars per gigawatt; with a budget like that you could have built multiple gigawatts of both wind and solar and the energy storage for them AND have them producing power to pay for themselves years earlier. The only question is which types of storage are cheapest and easiest to build(which includes lifespans) and which are the most efficient. 90% efficiency might not be worth it if we can get 50% at tenth of the price and without needing rare elements, especially if the plan is to store energy for days or longer. Losing some energy to inefficiency is less important when it is effectively free and would be lost if you don't have anything to store it with.

Megapacks and similar utility scale storage was the missing leg to the renewable energy triad. Now energy can be stored for use when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. Is it any surprise that Megapack sales are soaring, there is about a two year backlog despite the Lathrop plant ramping up production this past year. This backlog amounts to approximately 20,000 orders, with each 3EU priced at $2.4 million (base price). Do the math, and the Shanghai Megapack plant is now under construction.

the battery industry is mostly pie in the sky nonsense. every once in awhile one of these so called break throughs actually make it to mass production. the biggest one recently is definitely sodium ion batteries. I understand that this video is mainly about megapacks or powerwalls, but I think Tesla has an exponential amount more of battery in the form of their cars. As software continues to improve plug in Tesla's can and will be what helps meet peak load demands if an owner opps in to utilize a setup like this. Give it back at a little higher rate than you charge the car with at off peak hours. And if the home has solar then that's even more savings to the Tesla owner. If you have a 75kwh battery in your car and let 30kwh go back into the grid when needed then it's a win win for everybody and you can still drive your car at a moments notice. Now imagine millions of cars participating in this kind of program!😮

Just wait till Tesla does what Musk indicated will be coming on future MegaPacks! They will have all the equipment inside them to eliminate the need for an electrical substation. This means that you can hook your grid's high voltage lines directly to the Megapack with nothing in between. Plop them down and plug them in..... eliminating a lot of cost and construction time. If they do this then utilities might only choose Tesla as their provider for battery storage. Also once Tesla has this they can more easily use their MegaPacks at their super charger sites. Because right now they have to pull voltage through electrical company transformers that are on site.... that may not be that big. What happens when there is no need for that transformer because the megapack can be directly connected to the grid lines? This would mean that supercharging stations could be put almost anywhere much faster as there is no need for the utility to buy and put in a transformer. All they need is for their lines to the megapack to be able to handle the load. This should make it quicker to get a supercharging site up and running.

One Tesla Megapack is priced online at 1.24 million dollars. It provides 2.6 MWH. So, you need 384,615 battery packs for ONE Terra watt. That's about 477 Billion dollars for each Terra Watt of storage. That price does not include delivery, installation, wiring, labor, etc, etc So, for 5 Terra Watts... getting close to 2.5 Trillion dollars before installing and making it functional. Maybe by the time its installed and functional... 4 Trillion plus dollars???

However, I do worry that Tesla using battery types intended for electric vehicles in power storage is still a very expensive solution even with the price of Tesla's own 4680 cells going down. We need to emphasize less expensive means of power storage from renewables, because we don't need to instantaneous power available from large lithium-ion battery pack installations.
