7:38 - the Tesla being the first car of it’s likeness that I have ever driven, I would prefer to not drive any other. There is an amazing sense of openness and calmness about the cabin, especially from the driver’s seat, without all of the typical lights and dials flashing about. It’s such a serene drive at night along a dark road. It’s comfortable, but feels like you’re outside almost. Uncanny. Different? Yes. Better, much.

Yup. The most surprising "serenity" aspect to me was an unexpected source: stoplights! Normally they'd cause drivers stress, stuck stopped waiting... but stopped at a light, with NO engine noise and vibration, and especially if low fan speed.. .it is utter silence. Very peaceful and immediate sense of relaxation. Just a surprising but wonderful counter-intuitive reaction. I call the Tesla driving experience, "relaxing exhilaration"... or, is it "exhilarating relaxation"? :)

Except for that big bright light coming from the laptop stuck onto the dash, why did they not integrate the laptop into the dash ? it's cheaper just to stick it onto the dash , no one will notice if we just tell them how great if looks stuck on there :)

Keep in mind stuff like the glove box, wipers, etc., respond to voice control. Once you have the car personalized in your profile, you never need to touch the screen while driving.

Thank you, and yes, the luggage space is crazy. The 854 litres is to the roof line though so I think they might be measuring it in a way to make it sound bigger than cars that measure to the boot cover, but it's still huge and that's before you consider the underfloor and frunk.

@@car_babble the rear window view is tiny so you're probably not losing much view anyway 🤣. That's what rear view cameras are for right? I'm thinking the frunk will change the way we store things 👍🏻

7:54 - it’s not bad. In fact, after using it for a few months now, it’s better. Here’s why: adaptive cruise control. Set the speed for whatever you want and the car does the rest - no need to faff about with knowing what the speed is, because the car does it for you. 2. The speedometer has what the posted speed is right next to it. Very useful. I didn’t realize how many times I would like to know what the speed limit is at different times throughout different trips - and the car has your back all of the time. One quick glance at the speedo and you can tell what the posted speed limit is as well as the speed your vehicle is actually traveling. Which again, doesn’t matter anymore because the car is doing most of the work.

I have the white seats. They clean up easily and surprisingly don’t easily get dirty. Also, the touch screen turned out to be a non-issue. The only “gauge” info you need in an EV is speed. I also avoid using touchscreen while driving by using voice control.

I've cream seats in a car before and it was the dye from Jeans that was the biggest issue, but you can certainly protect the leather so that it makes cleaning easier.

If they put a dash on the car, looking at the speedometer through the steering wheel would actually be lower than the numbers on the top corner of the screen. Your eyes would have to look down further than the screen.

What this shows is how car reviewers are trained to look at superficial stuff like looks and interior for the simple reason that these are the only things that differentiate ICE cars and have been for decades. This reviewer was trained to look at cars with a front grill and he doesn't like it if he sees a Tesla. Think a minute about how silly that is! The same goes for folks that have been learned to want a lot of buttons in a car. The more the better, right? It shows you bought more options! Contrast that with the real cool things you experience when driving a model 3/Y: fast acceleration, fantastic handling, silent driving, the mind blowing efficiency compared to any other EV out there, the wonderful supercharger network, Tesla mobile services, the no haggling buying experience, and so on.
@car_babble

Hi Matt, thanks for the comment. As you can see from the number of videos I have on my channel at this point that I am quite new at this and certainly not trained by anyone other than myself (and watching other videos on KZfaq). The lack of grill on this car isn't an issue in any way, it just is an obvious tell tale sign that it's an EV. I love everything Tesla are doing, even if I don't love it, if that makes sense? They are pushing boundaries and that can only be a good thing.
@MattCasters

@car_babble thanks for the comment. My point is not really about Tesla but about EVs in general. There are a bunch of great EVs out there, but we can't review them the same way we review ICE cars. It feels like every time the really cool stuff takes the back seat in favor of some frivolous features in the commentary.

Good job at breaking out the pros, cons. You get at a lot of useful information. I just purchased the 2023 Model Y long range vehicle and should get it in 4 weeks or so. I got all the standard items for the Model Y and no EAP or FSD addons. Did buy the mobile charge kit to do 220 volt charging at home. I like that this vehicle is an AWD dual motor for our winter weather. I got the Model Y because it is a nice Hatchback style vehicle and enough storage for me. I preferred the 19 inch wheels/tires and they say we get a little more range with them. I got/like the Black seats, similar to my current Monte Carlo which is now 20 years old. I am retired, single, so most of the time it will be just me driving the Model Y. Controls are very simplistic - most control done from the display, which is good for me. There is a nice helpful voice command control for use while driving. Buying experience was very easy for me in the US. The Tesla facility was both Sales and service. Did a test drive in a Model Y, then placed my order for the vehicle. So that is about it for now on my Tesla. take care.

I got my model Y LR in September 2022. My current insurer reluctantly gave insured it on the understanding that I didn’t get the acceleration upgrade and that I wouldn’t use auto steering. You won’t sit for 1-2 hrs charging unless you use a last decade charging solution. For one, you don’t have to sit in the car at all while charging. You’d be getting coffee, eating lunch, visiting the loo, etc. on a Tesla supercharger station, you’ll likely be there for less than 1hr. I average 25 to 40mins max depending on how much I’m projecting to drive next day. Most charging happens at home, overnight.
@car_babble

Thanks for the comment. I think the point I was making is that if for some reason you did want or have to sit in your car and wait whilst it charged, Tesla have given you the best chance of making it entertaining.

I would disagree that the coupe-like proportions are form over function. No, in case of Tesla it's not only design, it's aerodynamics. Body shape serves the goal to reduce drag and thus improve range. It's matter of taste but I like the design of Model Y and I'm ready to sacrifice some boot height for a bit better range. I used to have typical SUV and I did not usually fill the boot to the roof 😀. There is however one occasion where this sloping roofline is a big disadvantage, if you plan to tow a trailer that is higher than the boot. I did tow one like this, and it reduced the range by allmost 2/3 and tried to blow off the soft cover tarp of the trailer. I suppose the car body directed the airflow down and boxy trailer was directly pushing against the wind.
@car_babble
@car_babble Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback and I take your point. I also did think after filming that I should have acknowledged the aerodynamics point as it is relevant to the Tesla ( as opposed to other ICE coupes that are definitely form over function) Good info on towing also 👍

Thank you Richard. I haven't drive the S100D so its hard for me to comment, but I know that older Tesla's are likely to have more issues with reliability so unless you need the extra performance of the S, I'd say the new Model Y LR will be a good shout.

Both Tesla's speedo and a conventional one are in your peripheral vision when you're looking straight ahead. There's no need to turn your head, just turn your eyes towards a different part of your peripheral vision. On the subject of colour options, Tesla's working towards more choice but this is economically smarter so far. The majority of the market are not looking to stand out, the seriously huge sellers are individually quite anonymous. 3 and Y fit that role perfectly. I'm surprised they haven't sorted out the suspension yet.
@car_babble
@car_babble Жыл бұрын
Hiya. I talk more about this in part 2, but I tend to agree with you. I just think when people are considering the car, they will possibly not think of it like that. Even if it is a case of adjusting your eyes, as opposed to or moving your head, it's still an adjustment that might feel unusual for people. Keeping the cost down is obviously key for the Model Y and 3, but I can't imagine there is many people who would prefer there wasn't some sort of HUD or cockpit behind the steering wheel.

@@car_babble I find it interesting that, back in the day, nobody thought the Mini's speedo in the middle of the dash was a problem. Far less ergonomic than 3/Y but, just like the Mini, hardly any owners have a problem adapting.

The build quality on the Model Y is terrible, press on the bonnet with your hand and watch how it flexes , it's paper thin . The reason the car is so minimal is because it makes the manufacturing of the car cheaper and quicker, the bottom line for an everyday car is how comfortable it is ,not it's 0-60. One of the gremilins with the software is the automatic stopping, sometimes the car will stop for no reason very dangerous and very frustrating . Tesla doesn't have local dealerships, you buy direct from Tesla online this will affect the customer's ability to get a deal on price like we can at the moment with VW for example, you just get quotes from different dealers and pick the best one, all dealers are in competition with each other. The other issue will be getting serious problems fixed at a Tesla service dept, Tesla don't have many of them. The biggest problem I see with the Telsa model of selling cars is the terrible trade-in valuations they give you, most people end up selling their own car. This would be all fine and dandy if the other car manufacturers stay with the old way of selling cars, with a dealer in every major town and multiple dealers in cities, with this you get a local service dept and you can play one off the other for a better price. But why would car manufacturers continue to spilt their profit with car dealerships when they can just sell directly to the customer and take all of the money, all they need do s just copy the Tesla model, shut down all the dealers and service depts and introduce a Ranger service.Then we will all be either leasing our cars or trying to sell our second cars privately to someone who doesn't have a trade in , the price of second-hand cars will fall off a cliff if that happens .Tesla updates usually do nothing or very little, these updates won't be free in the future, a bit like the way Microsoft stop supporting their software after a few years. Telsa has proved that good marketing will win every time, they are changing the way cars are sold and not in a good way.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a big comment Jonny. I think the farting is silly and not something you seek in a car, but I think kids might find it amusing. Do you work in the motor trade by any chance? You raise some interesting points about that the commercial side of things...

I would think buying directly from the manufacturer as opposed to third party dealers cuts out alot of the middle man costs and you therefore save money. I’ve owned a model 3 since 2019 and upgraded to a model Y this year and have had no issues with “phantom braking” or build quality.

Teslas only have a few hundred moving parts compared to the tens of thousands of an ICE. More often than not Tesla send out a service person to you (which they did when I broke my seat adjust buttons by accidentally kicking it with a steel cap boot). And they fix it on the spot while it’s in the car park while your at work. I also had a minor software bug, completely drivable but the music wasn’t playing. I did a reset while I was driving (which you can safely do. Surprise surprise). And when that didn’t work I called Tesla and their IT logged into the car remotely and diagnosed and solved the issue within around 15 minutes. I’d prefer that to going to a dealership.

I’ve been getting free updates since I got my model 3 in 2019. In that time I’ve gotten Netflix added to the car, Spotify, Disney plus, apply music, tune in radio, increased functionality like viewing sentry in the car, viewing the sentry cameras remotely on my phone from anywhere in the world, they’ve made big improvements on driving, abs braking, auto wipers, all these things came in updates. Hell I even got an update that not only increased the range of the car but also the acceleration. By updating how the car handles the motor. Tesla has never given any indication that this service will be moved to a paid for service. And it’s been free since well before I got my first tesla in 2019.

Tesla don’t do marketing. No online adds or website banners, no sponsor adverts, no commercials or billboards. They’re almost exclusively sold through word of mouth. So I don’t understand the comment “Tesla proves that good marketing will always win”.

1. The sunroof gets hot in summer. There is no retractable cover built in 2. The rear window is useless as it's too narrow to look out of it. 3. No apple carplay/android auto 4. Super uncomfortable ride. The suspension is stiff that everyone sitting inside the Y feels every bump through the chassis 5. The seats are uncomfortable. You are sitting on the seat rather than in the seat. 6. No HUD 7. No speedometer 8. Cheap build quality 9. No 360 camera when you are reversing or moving forward 10. Auto wipers barely work 11. Autopilot barely works 12. No cargo cover is supplied 13. No mobile charger is supplied 14. No type 2 cable is supplied 15. Tesla keeps dropping their prices every couple of months making owners lose $ for they paid and quickly depreciating there vehicles. 16. Tesla vision is rubbish 17. Matrix headlights barely work 18. KZfaq app in tesla is limited to 360p making it next to useless 19. No cross-alert traffic system 20. Elon musk

Thank you for the detailed feedback. You touch on some really interesting points, some of which I could not confirm or deny without spending more time with the car. Some of your points are undeniable, but the owner of the car does not agree on others so could be a matter of opinion or individual build errors. I also think the Tesla's are improving all the time, so certain issues will be addressed, but I hadn't realized there was no rear cross traffic alert and that is an omission.
