@@solartimeusa I purchased 18 solar panels, the 2 powerwalls and they are connected with a gateway for whole house backup. The installation was completed in 1 day (12 hours) and they only needed to turn the power off for about an hour. The crew were great really hard working guys, as a retired engineer I was impressed by how neat a job they did. I figure the ROI will be about 8 years and love having. the security of not having any blackouts. My Model Y now runs on sunshine,

I’ve had 2 powerwalls for almost 2 years. I already had the solar and they were one of only ones compatible with my AC coupled system. It will be 2 years in June and we have lost power 93 times and never had to even reset my clocks or appliances. Most were short outages but some up to 9 hours. Running the whole house overnight for 9 hours, I still had 2/3 of backup from memory. I have 8.4 kw of solar and micro inverters since 2017, never missed a beat except when squirrels ate my wires, lol. Installed screens and no issues since.

Yes, 7 years old in September and going strong. It is a great cash on cash investment. I actually looked and time has flown, it’s been almost 3 years on the powerwalls. Batteries not good investment but great and priceless peace of mind as I get older and more exhausted. Had to siphon gas during Hurricane Isabel, too tired for that anymore.

Yes, installed solar September 2017 so almost 7 years. At or Almost net zero. 8.4 kw with micro inverters. I do need to get my Enphase system monitor back up and running so I can monitor each panel and sign up to sell the SREC’s. Last time I checked that would bring in another $50 or so a month. Been lackadaisical in doing it, just not enough time or energy. I think solar is a great cash on cash investment and powerwalls are piece of mind investments. I monitor it with the Tesla app so I have lazy. Time flies, just looked it up and it will be 3 years in June with the powerwalls, thanks

Nice video, and good overview of all the specs. I think the comment about not needing the MCI is in cases where local codes aren't going by the latest NEC, or if you are installing ground mount solar which doesn't have those (annoying) rapid shutdown requirements. I don't think they are saying they support power optimizers. I like their approach - minimize any electronics on the roof, and offer many MPPTs to deal with any shading or different roof surfaces.

Personally I like the idea of stackable batteries because you can put more kwh's of battery storage in a smaller wall area but the other factors people should look at is (quality and bang for the buck) or how many $Dollars per kwh of storage which includes installation. Stackables are a lot cheaper or even DIY to install than 2 or 3 big 150 - 200lb wall batteries like Teslas or Enphase.
@solartimeusa

That was one of my first questions about this product, if we stack 4 powerwalls we now have 40 kW of AC Solar output, and if someone just has a 10 kW solar system its kinda pointless. I am waiting for tesla to come out with just the extra battery add ons, not the whole unit! I do like the other options too Eg4 pricing wise is still such a win!!! I like when we have good diversity and competition in the market. I am just wondering where will tesla go with their micros? If it wont be able to compete on pricing... THoughts ? THANK YOU FOR LEAVING A COMMENT! :)

@@solartimeusa -- I agree that would be overkill and those 4 Powerwalls are going to fill up a good sized wall and are heavy and must be professionally installed. $$$ ------- By (Stackable Batteries) I was talking more of batteries like the HomeGrid Stack'd Series - You can buy the Homegrid Controller and 2 battery modules online that stack on top of each other for about $8,000 and have 9.6kwh in capacity and once stacked are about the size of a mini refrigerator. You can install them yourself if you have basic mechanical and electrical knowledge with a drill motor and socket and ratchet and screwdriver in about 1 hour and then connect them to an inverter. You can buy and stack up to 8 batteries total per Controller and install some later if you decide you need more storage at about $2,000 each module up to 8 total for a maximum 38kwh to fit what works for your solar panel system.

@Bowhunters6go8xz6x
@Bowhunters6go8xz6x 2 ай бұрын
@@mtbshig3081 - May not be possible, difficult at best because companies like Tesla, Enphase, Solaredge do not make it easy to get other brands to (communicate) together with their systems. Tesla Powerwall batteries are designed to work with the Tesla gateway and app. You can get batteries from a different company but then you would need that company’s gateway installed and batteries and app. Most gateways have a way to monitor the total solar output as well as the total house consumption and the total battery usage and charge levels all at the same time in their app.--- The biggest issue will be getting these batteries that will talk/communicate with the Tesla Gateway, Enphase and SolarEdge does the same thing as they try to make it to where their systems only talk to their products but not others.

They said they would not be installing Powerwall 3 because the powerwall has a string inverter. I live in northern part of the US and we have snow for 4-5 months of the year. My solar installer says because of our snowy climate string inverters are not the best choice.

Thanks for the video. It looks pretty good. Depends on the price of course. 10 year warranty for the inverter is good. I don't think it is a disservice to the industry to have 25 year warranties... provided that it is the manufacturer on the hook for the equipment.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment! :) Very true point. The warranty is great, as long as the manufacturer is there to support it. It is a disservice if they only say 25 years to sell more batteries but they don't plan to stand behind the warranty for more than 10-15 years, any company can look for and find reasons to deny a warranty if they try to and claim (misuse, or overuse for too many cycles) if they try.

At 2:51 the chart shows 20KW max solar input, but only 5KW max continuous charge power into the battery. I assume the rest must go to the grid unless you have only 5KW of solar per powerwall? I still prefer a hybrid inverter (EG4 18K) with separate batteries for this reason, although it is a bit more complex to wire up.

I am really surprised they didn't up the Kwh size of this. With Tesla embracing LFP from other vendors like CATL, I would have thought they would offer larger sizes for the same price by now given LFP is cheaper than Lithium.. and lasts longer, more charge cycles DoD, safer to build (e.g. no kids, kobalt, etc). But more so, their are so many competitive much cheaper solutions. EG4 is a great example, or Solark. They offer 5.1Kwh batteries for $1200.. so 3 of those for $3600 gets you more storage capacity. Granted it does not put out the same amperage rating as tesla, but with the right inverter setup (e.g. Victron) you can handle 18000 watts of 120/240 output and multiple large battery banks.. so 6 victron 5000 units would run you 15K, another 3500 for the 15Kwh battery setup, and you can expand much cheaper as needed. For those all in on Tesla everything I can see how the Tesla solution would work well, especially if you are having solar and battery put in all at once.. but man.. the cost is nuts. Just pointing out that while what they offer is great, its 4x more expensive than what you can do with other options.

Our incoming 400amp service is split into 3 exterior main panels. 2 (200a/150a)for primary residence and 1(150a) for accessory dwelling. What would be needed to backup the entire property with PW3 designed system, assuming ground mounted solar?
@solartimeusa
@solartimeusa 2 ай бұрын
Hi! So your situation is very common in Tx and a bit more complicated. Each Panel would require each own Gateway, because the PW3 and Gateways are rated at 200 amp, so each home panel would be backed up by their own gateways and PW3. Now you may want to back up just one of the 3 panels and act as if its the critical panel for the outage or you could back up 2 out of 3, or all 3. I Hope that helps. I would suggest doing a proper analysis to see how much the home usages at night and during the day. This will be a great investment but you want to make sure its done right. If I can help with a consult send me an email: info@solartimeusa.com

This is a solar DC coupled only product from Tesla. They are going to lose quite a lot of market share as they are no longer an solar AC coupled product. There are many examples where AC coupling is a better choice based on shading, or existing solar only systems. How do you know if a panel is working on the Tesla setup?
@solartimeusa
@solartimeusa 2 ай бұрын
Very good question. The easiest way: 1. CHecking the string Voltage. With string inverters and panels being in series we add each panels Voltage, building a string. That gives us an idea of what voltage we have on each string. If you have 10 panels at 50 Volts, you now have about 500V String. So every so often you could check if the voltage on the string stays the same, and if there is a lower voltage you can then investigate further. 2. By checking your production every so often. This will not be as accurate but will give you some idea. 3. PAnels really DO NOT BREAK. It is extremely uncommon. MY family home has had a system in Poland since 2011 and we have not had a single panel fail once. I personally have installed tens of thousands of panels and had maybe a FEW panels failures. This is the biggest misconception in our industry. You put a little computer under a panel to tell you when THAT computer fails. Because if a panel is not communicating ( greyed out) on your monitoring 99.9% of the time its the optimizer or microinverters failing. And sometimes its critters chewing on your wires. I hope that helps! :)

But if they stop making PW2, then I am sure that Tesla will come up with a way to expand the PW3 to the PW2 system. We will have to wait and see. But even if not there are ways to AC couple other solutions like FranklinWh, so you will be okay! I hope that helps!

@solartimeusa
@solartimeusa 2 ай бұрын
Hmmm, that could have been a cae due to two main panels. For example some homes in Texas will have 2 x 200 amp split service, each 200 amp panel will need individual gateway, or if you only use one then that particular panel is only back up. I hope that makes sense. I plan to do a video on this as this is becoming a big issue in TX with people having 2 main 200 amp panels...

Question, how did the longer warranties do a disservice to the industry?
@solartimeusa
@solartimeusa 2 ай бұрын
Because the majority of the market never offered a 10+ warranty. They only becasue popular becacue young brands needed to get more traction. Majority of the world inverter manufacturers ( global players) such as Huawei, Sungrow, Ginlong, Growatt, and GoodWe never offered products with long warranties that are unrealistic. We brainwashed consumers to think that below 25 year warranty is trash, where it really is not. 10 year warrant is great. And we should not complain. That is my opinion though.

Not necessary, you could change out the 2 x 5 KW into 1 x PW3, but can you share if you have some sort of rapid shutdown or optimizers on the roof? Max charger capacity is dissapoining. Many larger PV systems put out more than that. And only 10 year warrenty when microinverters have 25 year warrenties is not great. Why can;t someone make a 25 year warrenty for a string inverter?
@solartimeusa
@solartimeusa 2 ай бұрын
Hey, thats a very valid point, but did you know that the 25 year enphase microinverter warranty is dependent on the system being CONTINOUSLY connected to the envoy/ internet. The envoy is $1,100 and only on a 5 year warranty... So in reality it is worth very little :( Majority of the string inverters were and are on a 10-15 year warranty. Those units were never meant to have such a long warranty. I believe it was a sales tactic from microinverter company, to gain market share... Trust me, European market being a pioneers of solar energy, they laugh at our 25 year warranty. Its those bells and whistles we all like... to be sold. I am sorry, i don't mean to be rude. There seems to be a theme of negativity towards Microinverters in your videos, Unfairly you imply that there are massive round trip losses of AC/DC conversions, whereas I would suggest DC to AC on the roof is the least loss scenario if you are going to use your Solar energy for loads during the day. Similarly comparing the Tesla Powerwall3 directly against an Enphase Battery 5P is not like for like, it would be fairer to compare a minimum of 2x Battery 5P especially when taking the cost of each unit into consideration. Hey CHriss! Yes I did totally missed the price, but its kinda hard to say. Not a lot of installers were able to even install it, so its hard to price properly. We will have for sure more solid pricing soon. MY guess is 13-16k, per powerwall3 with installation and extra wiring. Keep in mind this has a built in solar inverter too, so no need for that. I Hope that makes sense.,

The 10k for equipment is : 13 kWh BATTERY, SOLAR INVERTER + BATTERY INVERTER + THE WHOLE BRAIN OF IT. In my opinion that is actually super low. BUt could be just me.
