July 29th, 2021 at Bradenton Motorsports Park (1/4mile).
Just one day after taking delivery of our first (of 3) Plaids, it was out for more drag strip action! (After 20 passes the night before.)
Running on the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (21”), while racing against the fastest full-bodied cars we could find.
Race #, ET, MPH, Reaction, 60-ft W/L
1: 9.454, 151.95, -0.021, 1.58, W Plaid Mode
2: 9.872, 106.59, 0.185, 1.48, W Drag Strip + Launch
3: 10.223, 99.99, 0.865, 1.75, L Launch Mode failed
4: 10.088, 104.21, 0.019, 1.58 W Drag Strip (no Launch)
5: 10.213, 88.49, 3.49, 1.48, W Drag Strip + Launch
6: 10.122, 136.95, 0.183, 1.51, W Drag Strip (no Launch)
[Tesla started with 91% battery, ended at 77% after six races (~2.3% per run).
Note: ET’s always exclude Reaction Times! The time from Green Light to the finish line is the total of RT + ET. ET is the time from actually crossing the Start Line to crossing the Finish Line, irrespective of the driver's reaction to the light.
Thanks to Mike (Modified Redeye Challenger), Doug (Modified Redeye Charger), Kim (Monte Carlo) and all other drivers for these races!

Odd. I wonder how drag racing will change with the advent of regenerative braking. Not nearly the risk of break failures with regenerative breaking, as compared to non electric vehicles. Perhaps that should be considered how before requiring a parachute. Just goes to show that regulation often likes behind innovation. Also, if they track owners fully understood electric vehicles then perhaps electric vehicles would be exempt from that rule.

@@diabolus5522 true but it’s a mass produced family sedan with more then enough brakes. Usually tracks are worried about morons who upgrade everything but their brakes, and have super unstable cars. On a Racetrack they have often overall DB Limits and when you hammer 101% over it, it becomes too loud. Than you maybe dont get on the track or will be fished out.

The Tesla has a very strong roof, among the best in the industry, but it's nowhere near as strong as a roll cage. And airbags offer no protection in a rollover. The issue should be how likely is the vehicle going to get into a yaw mode while going in a straight line. None of the modded old cars and trucks we see on the strip where ever designed for high speeds. They can spin out just going in a straight line, and their roofs offer the rollover protection of a tin can. Modern cars designed for the autobahn aren't going to get into a yaw mode going in a straight line unless they hit something (an object or a fluid spill).

Thanks for coming out with this eagerly awaited video. It is clearly frustrating to have those outdated rules that do not account for newer, safer, factory stock, high performance EVs. We knew that you were going to have to adapt your racing style to compensate for the Plaid's overachiever performance, but it definitely presented some unforeseen challenges at this 1/4 mile track. It was surprising that even when you let off and applied the brakes hard you still got a 9.8@104MPH. It's like Superman trying to play football with humans. It's funny that for years we all turned cartwheels trying to get just a little quicker and faster, and now you just blow past those goals with the Tesla Plaid, and have to run on that razor's edge. It looks like you adapted pretty quickly though, and have a workable approach of staying a fender ahead, with the R/T edging out a win. The Tesla Plaid's strengths of 1000HP+ and accurate control would make for a worthy bracket racer. But I think that you are going have more fun 1/8th mile racing, with no worries about being to quick or too fast.

Some of the NHRA rules that many tracks enforce might seem outdated at first, however, but they were instituted for safety after really bad accidents. Cages are required for driver protection when things go wrong at high speeds and the car goes out of control. Clothing is required to protect the driver from a fire. Chutes are needed because brakes fail or fade and there isn't enough length at the end of the track. Rear external power cutoffs are needed to kill engine and power to avoid electrical fires after accidents. You can't pretend there isn't any danger in an EV. Physics still apply.
@TeslaPlaidChannel

@@larrycleeton 👍 For sure, that’s why I’ve been wearing SFI-rated gear from head to toe for year . Long before this car,, it was by my choice, not because my car was fast enough to require it.
@deanmcmanis9398
@deanmcmanis9398 2 жыл бұрын
@@larrycleeton That all makes sense. Safety is vital, and anyone who has drag raced before has probably seen something unforeseen go sideways. And with the speeds that these cars are going there definitely need to be safeguards. But I have to say that many of these safety guidelines were created with heavily modified, older vehicles in mind. I own a 1959 Karmann Ghia, which originally had a 36HP engine and top speed of 56MPH. Just going up to 120HP meant that I had to change many things, with disc brakes being first. But modern cars, especially EVs, simply are safer, and built to be driven faster, and stop better. Granted there still needs to be safety guidelines, but they need to be updated to match the capabilities of modern vehicles.
