Hi , I'm shooting 1000 yards IBS competition. I'm running a 10-60×56 March Highmaster. Im in the market for another scope for a second rifle. I've been looking at this scope for a while because on a 3rd rifle (beginner rifle) I have a straight power 36x Leopold and the image in the glass is stunning. This has me looking at the Mark 5 so that it's a variable scope. I'm wondering what the image is like. The 36x is like looking with your eyes, no discoloration or changes of appearance.

Appreciate your work and the great review on the M5 scope. I have had mine nearing 2 years or thereabouts. Best bang for your buck for what you get in my opinion . I use the 3.6-18 with T-3 on an AMC mount all the way to 1000m and it does the job well.

I’ve had 2 M5’s for a couple years, the 3.6-18 & the 5-25, both excellent scopes. Tough to beat Leupold, although I put a N.F. ATACR 7-35X56 on the 300 PRC, good to see when your your reaching out there, especially when seeing isn’t as easy as it was 40 years ago. Really great to get all your new input and hear fresh enthusiasm I Truly appreciate it. Thanks for keeping a guy inspired.

How does the nf compare to the mk5? I have a few mk5s and razors and my brother has a nf and I can't see a ton of difference in clarity out to 700y But everyone seems to say the mk5 doesn't hold a candle to the nf glass.

I've been running the illuminated TMR 3.6-18 for over a year now. Hands down my favorite scope. The quality is well above the price range. You should check out the illumination too, very clean. That would be a good thing to test as well. I've seen some "quality" scopes that are fine until you light them up, then you get big halo in the tube. It would be great if you could do a comparison with the Mark 8. It would be the closest a peasant such as myself will ever get to looking through one.

I have one Leupold scope, a VX-31 LRP, and it’s the only one I lapped the rings to make sure it was bedded properly. It’s on a stock Ruger Precision in 6 Creedmoor that shoots five shot groups touching (almost one hole) at 100 yds.

(The 5-25 on two different rifles) I shot my best 1K group with the 5-25 to date. (2.74 inches at 1K with a factory Christensen Mesa LR and 230 Bergers)

Having mirage makes it tough trying to get the parallax dialed out. If ya can’t get the parallax dialed out correctly, then this alone can cause false testing. In other words it could look like an optic has error when it doesn’t and a lot of shooters don’t understand or know when the parallax turret or knob is adjusted correctly. I’ve seen professional marksman not fully understand this concept. I’m sure UR had this down. Great content!! Thanks!!

Panavision has a rig that will align to .0001" it's used for video compositing and was patented in the 1980s. They used it to add 6 layers of video over each other to create a practical effects shot for one of the star wars movies. I think Mr knoll actually owns the patent. He has over 6,000 patents for optics rigs and camera mounts. He will actually help you with a patent if you need help. He helped a friend who designed a multiplex camera rig that held a rifle scope with a digital sensor on one side and a 35mm camera on the other to test the clarity of scopes. I think his rig used cnc pillar vises to do everything and had a laser to track the overlap points. He ended up having to ditch the patent because there were hundreds of designs that were close to the design and he ended up having a single patent that was close that wouldn't release to allow his patent. Cost him 150k and he almost lost his house over it. Lost his wife, she refused to deal with his obsession with optics. There are millions of optics patents, good luck with the patent and remember, China doesn't care about them and will knock it off and sell to eastern European companies killing your patent.

For anyone curious I have the mk5 7-35 and 5-25, and razor gen 2. Looking side by side at an electric box about 100y away I can see more detail and fine print with the mk5 at 25x vs razor at 27x... now with the mk5 7-35 I can see more detail than both others at only 20x. Might be a fov thing? Not sure but I'm amazed at the 7-35 and the usability of the pr2 reticle even down to 12x its very usable.

Love your work! That said, I have always tried to keep my reticle as close as possible to the optical center of the scope so that you are using the center of the lenses. As you approach the edge of the lens you loose the image quality built into that lens. That is why I prefer the Leupold impact type reticle vs dialing windage & elevation. The mechanical center & the optical center are different. (Because of the offset caused by space occupied by the adjustment hardware) The mechanical center can be found by dividing the number of correction clicks in half. The optical center can be found by holding the eye piece against a well lighted mirror, looking through the objective end, and aligning the two images of the reticle you see with the windage & elevation dials. If memory serves, this is best done at the lowest magnification. I wonder how this would affect your data?

If I'm understanding your magnification analysis correctly, it seems what you're measuring is relative -- between the power settings. I'd also be interested in "absolute" magnification accuracy. I wonder whether you could do that by absolute measurement of your images vs actual size of the image. Also, a MAJOR parameter for me is resolution/clarity. Do you think you could come up with a test for that? One practical way I've always thought about is comparing distance/magnification/ability to read some standard text. If, on exactly the same magnifications, you could read standardized text with scope A at 65 yards, but scope B could read it at 71 yards, then scope B has superior resolution. Would you care to discuss the issue of resolution?

What!?! Spend as much on the scope as the rifle???? This $50 eBay scope is all I need on my custom build! It has a red dot and a LASER! (You know you’ve seen it.)

Off Topic: I am having problems with Hornady brass for my 6.5 PRC. After 2-3 reloads, the primer pocket is getting loose-too loose to use. Is this a common problem with Hornady in 6.5 PRC? Is Lapua better (longer lasting)? Rifle Bergara B-14 Wilderness HMR Powder: N165 50gr Bullet: 140 gr Hornady HPBT No pressure signs on brass, no stiff bolt release. Thanks

I have always found that Lapua brass is top notch. I wish that I had about 5000 pieces of it for every cartridge I fuss with LOL.

Hey Gavin so I currently have a NF NX8 4-32 F1, do you think this scope is a higher quality or comparable?

Bedding the scopes doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me if lapping scope rings is a thing

Its a thing for sure, but I'll say the better quality rings you use the less you got to do this. Quality does not always equate to most expensive either.

It's not in the same class, the Midas Tac though a more than decent scope at a much cheaper price is Chinese and the Leupold is made in the USA sourced with foreign and domestic parts while the Midas Tac is 100% made in China.

I own an Athlon Midas Tac among other Chinese made scopes from big name American scope companies and don't expect anything made in China to be as reliable as American made as my Leupolds or anything made in Japan.
