Adam's assassin's sword finds its new home in this custom carved sheath! And while Adam has made scabbards for almost all of his blade builds, this is the first that he's done as a One Day Build--and perhaps his most satisfying yet. From carving the wool-lined wood to perfectly fit the blade shaping the brass fittings, Adam is most pleased with his sword finally completed!

Adam, sir I wish I had 1/10th of your budget for new toys... err tools, however I noticed you are using American Aircraft metal shears. Get yourself of Original Gilbow metal Shears Made in Sheffield, England- I have 3 pairs, 8", 10" and 14". They are the Dogs Bollox of sheet metal cutters and you will never touch those American aviator things again. Gilbow Shears are the best in the world- ask any sheet metalworker, shipwright or anyone worth their salt in the sheet metal industry.

I made a number of scabbards for broadswords a number of years ago - when the build was close to done I started coating the blade with graphite the sliding it in. This showed where it was rubbing most on the way in and where we needed to shave away a little more without overdoing areas that didn't need it. Hope this helps!

Back in the eighties there used to be a fellow that I frequently saw walking in the Capital Hill area of Seattle, or practicing with it in a local park. I think it was a two hander and he had it sheathed on his back. Always saw him by his self, never saw anyone hassling him, it was just the individualist kind of thing seen in some Seattle neighborhoods at the time, like the chewing gum wall, the statues of a group of people waiting for a trolley that people would dress up for winter, events, and such, and the troll under the Hwy 99 bridge clutching a VW Beatle.

I learned the hard way that chiseling out a scabbard for a lightsaber katana, ended up buying a set of bent neck chisels which makes my life a lot easier ( and then I fashioned a jig together and just routed it out because the scabbards were sitting on my bench for about 6 months ignored. Absolutely wonderful to see Adam go through the same process haha. Chiseling is definitely a totally consuming process like that.

Loving the sword content. I like the traditional sheep's wool lining. But I suspect that that specific bit of wool was cleaned and so lost most of its anti-rust oils, coupled with most of the wool being shaved off as well. However just as some lining to help hold and cushion the sword it would probably work well anyway, as long as the chemicals used are non acidic. Typically you also don't want to store the sword for long periods of time in the scabbard, since it can trap humidity and you won't notice if rust starts to form. Very interesting project and I can tell Adam has been reading his Oakeshott.
@JayJordan00
@JayJordan00 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's the natural lanoline in sheep's wool that would help keep off the moisture, anything sold retail has had all that washed away. If it doesn't smell like sheep, you would need to add a form oil yourself. ;-)

Just for future reference it's a really good idea to scribe about a 16th of an inch line across the top of the scabbard inside where the lambskin ends so you can tap it into that 16th inch depression. That alleviates the sword accidentally lifting the edges.

Nice historical point made in the video. Swords scabbarded on the back are generally ahistorical. Some large swords could be slung on the back for transport, but they would have to be unslung to draw and fight with. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but almost universally swords were worn at the waist.

I've been using various hide glues for decades in the historic restoration field, primarily with wood, but also other organics. If you're not going to use up that Titebond liquid hide glue in the next six to nine months or so, I recommend you keep it in the fridge (better yet, the freezer) for a much longer shelf life. Unlike most food expiration dates, definitely DO pay attention to the date on liquid hide glue bottles. When liquid hide glue gets too old, it no longer hardens fully. If you need your chilled/frozen hide glue in a hurry, just drop the bottle in some hot water for a few minutes and it will be ready to go. In my experience, it doesn't suffer from multiple freeze/thaw cycles. My guess is that the long protein chains break down over time, either through enzymes or oxidation, so that when it dries, those broken up protein chains can't do as good a job cross linking and tangling up. For some applications that's not a problem, but you definitely do not want to use past-its-prime liquid hide glue for things like furniture joinery where joint creep is bad. There, you want it nice and fresh. When used fresh, a well fit, well glued joint can last hundreds of years, and still remain reversible for future generations to repair without undue difficulty. As an alternative, dry hide glue has a very long shelf life, and you can hydrate/heat just as much as you need for a particular job. Hot hide glue is it's own thing that also has the advantage of being nearly instant, although it's a bit more of a pain to prep. Altogether, though, hide glue is great stuff!
