This video is part of a sponsored series with Princess Cruises.
Adam Savage heads above deck to check out the brand-new, ultra high-tech bridge of a next generation cruise ship, The Sun Princess. In this episode, he meets Captain Gennaro Arma, who guides us through the future of commanding these floating mega-machines. Today, Adam visits the ship’s bridge which, with all the newest innovations and technology being utilized, looks almost unrecognizable to any cruise ship bridge you’ve ever seen before.

This is a legitimately HUGE change in the bridge team of any vessel. The naval hierarchy and the way you ascend up it has been constant for thousands of years. They're COMPLETELY changing the way a ship can be operated in terms of rank and experience. I don't think they talked about that enough.

I have to say I'm impressed with how well Princess Cruises have implemented this collaboration. They're really letting Adam and the team keep the core of what makes Tested appeal to it's audience while still showcasing what they have to offer and without it feeling forced. Not easy to pull off. As a side note, I live about 300 metres from a cruise ship port (Invergordon, Scotland) and see these ships coming and going all the time. It's hard to grasp the sheer scale of these things until you really get up close, and the ones we get aren't nearly as big as this one!

I have never been out to sea, and not away from city lights on land but rarely far enough to see much of the night sky. But the few times I've seen it was spectacular. As a Floridian, my gf in high school who grew up on boats taught me a cool trick. During sunset we would lay down on our stomachs and watch the sun go down, and as soon as it went down, we would run up the lifeguard tower and watch the sunset again. If you’re quick and it’s high enough you can watch a full sunset twice! Usually it’s about one and a half sunsets though. But any extra sunsets over water is a beautiful thing! Works in reverse for sunrise too. That’s how she learned it from her father, they would climb up top of the boat before sunrise, watch the sun come up and then jump into the water and watch it again! Haha Nature is incredible!

@HaileISela

just a lot more boxy and linear, alas... that's actually something where science fiction has by now gotten to a way more organic feel which only makes sense given humans generally being organic bodies. to accommodate them, offering also some more room for direct communication, round and trihexagonal arrangements of monitors, workstations seats and positions would allow this place to become a lot more fluent and effective. experiencing storms from that place should be quite something, too... i will keep my usual distaste for the whole cruise ship thing to me, as all further commentary on the matter of capitalism in this very late and very tiresome stage, and its utterly disturbing offset from any place of balance.

I went on a cruise recently, and you don't feel the thousands of people. Maybe things get tight during the breakfast and dinner rushes, but you otherwise can pretty easily find spaces to enjoy in relative isolation. And you can always lock yourself in the cabin, enjoy some movies while watching the sea go by, and have the free room service bring you ice cream or whatever else you want all day if you really want to be alone. Also, being on a ship with "thousands" of other people is still way, way better than getting anywhere in a city like NY.

I am currently one of Viking Cruises Resident Astronomers and work primary on only 2 of their 7 ocean ships so I’ve gotten to know the senior fairly well and being a retired AF Col I alway get invited to the bridge during most cruises. Even though the Viking ships are “smaller” with only 900 passengers and about 1,200 crew their bridges are massive. I also work from time to time on other cruise ships as an Enrichment lecturer and the last time I worked on celebrity Summit I also got invited to the bridge to watch a port departure and that bridge made the Viking bridge look small. Quite a bit different than the small fighter cockpits I spent 12 years of my AF career stuffed into … lol

My grandfather was lucky enough to be a carpenter on a team that were renovating some of the deck and managed to save a portion of the discarded timber to make a tobacco box out of. In 1987, I interviewed at Singer Link, a company that was best known for their commercial flight simulators. They also did car and ship simulators. Their ship simulators required the most compute power because they had by far the widest field of view (about 270 degrees, I think). I had the opportunity to go inside one while it was running, and the view was just stunning. Much like the 360 degree movie in EPCOT's Canada Pavilion, except that it was a real time simulation, not a movie. I can only imagine what the view from a real cruise ship's bridge is like.

The wheelhouse of that ship makes me think of something out of Star Trek. I love that space is this weird mix of flying and sailing. If I recall correctly, there are some maritime traditions they do on the ISS. But the Dragon capsule that brings them to the ISS has a pilot. I can't wait to see what the human rated Starship "bridge" will look like. Based on the interior of the Dragon, I bet it looks something like this cruise ship's bridge. It will finally be that futuristic, Star Trek-esque setup we have been wanting. We call them space _ships_ and there are some maritime laws that bleed over to space but a space ship is flown by a pilot. I just get excited when I see new ships like this because I imagine that it will influence space travel. Looking at the renders, they could be sitting on the bridge of a cruise ship or they could be strapped down in zero g on their way to Mars on the bridge of a Starship.

I gotta add some "well akshuallys": HMS Victory is 227.5'. Her gundeck (i.e., main deck) is 186', but sailing vessels are traditionally measured by their overall length. The model Adam showed is Victory's overall length. There are 20.5 books in the Aubrey/Maturin series. There are twenty completed novels and one (aptly named "21") that was unfinished at the time of O'Brian's death. I've read the Aubreyad over two dozen times and I think the series is the greatest work of modern English literature; they are truly a wonderful thing.

Bridge has a very Star Trek vibe to it the minute I look at that layout, USS Enterprise styling along with other starships of the fleet. Wow! You need to go back after it's finished Adam.

I hope they employ a full-time IT team to live and work on that ship during operation. With a bridge like that, they will need it.

I always pegged Adam as more of a Star Wars guy next to his Indiana Jones persona. Grant was definitely the Trekki of the Mythbusters team lol

A 3000-passenger cruise ship generates one million gallons of gray water, 210,000 gallons of sewage and 25,000 gallons of oily bilge water in just 7 days. That is the science we should be hearing about. Not the scale of it's engineering.

Is gray water a big deal? That's just drainage from showers and sinks. And how would that matter at ocean scales? A year of graywater water into the ocean would be like 1 part to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. Just make sure they dump stuff when they're a few miles off the coast.

An LNG ship should produce less oily bilge water I would think. And if people took vacations on land, they would produce gray water and sewage. In fact, if they stay at home, they will still want to, you know, live.

I saw a container ship bridge one time. It was a huge room, with a relatively small control console and a desk in the middle, and then these long hallways off to either side (the overhanging part he mentioned). I guess I somehow expected it to have more stuff in it.

Just wondering with the screens now not hidden behind a console desk, how does the glare and direct sunlight effect operations?

The word bridge comes from the steam engine era of ships; where an engineer constructed a literal bridge between his two steam engines so he could easily move back and forth between his engines and keep an eye on things. The officers discovered that they too could see what was going on better, so that command position became the bridge.

I notice that the helmsmen, who are unlicensed mariners, still don't rate chairs, on this expansive bridge where there's a special chair for every officer who could possibly happen to be on the bridge during normal operations. It also looks like the helm station doesn't have any repeaters or indicators, but requires the helmsman to watch the overhead displays. Nor do I see any controls at the helm station other than the wheel itself. I'm sure the officers and company execs think this bridge looks really cool, but I'm... unimpressed. Except the tug-style seating is an interesting idea on a cruise ship.
