Show and Tell: Adam Unboxes Prop Replica Projects!

As Adam settles back into the cave and workshop after a month away from home, he unboxes two recent prop replica acquisitions that he made before the holidays. First off is a gorgeous replica of a Mondoshawan alien head and neck from The Fifth Element from a run on the RPF, cast from an original prop! It's a beautiful display piece but Adam can't help but imagine how it could integrate into a full cosplay...

I have heard, from a friend who attended a con where Sigourney Weaver told this story, that reason the cat carrier was made was because the stunt cat playing Jonesy took violent exception to the Alien. Which is why the suit ended up with an entirely different head design from the initial version, as the cat destroyed it trying to 'kill' the Alien. In the scene where the alien inspects Jonesy in the carrier the alien head is on a boom meant for mics so it can be operated at safe distance...and that also explains why the carrier has a way over-kill latching mechanism. Nobody wanted a berserk cat loose again. ripping up the prop head.

My friend was an extra on The Fifth Element, he was in the suit of the Mondoshawan that gets their hand stuck in the door. He was also one of the flamethrower operators clearing the critters off the bottom of the ship. Was a big fan of the film before I met him but now it has even more meaning. He was a great harmonica player too!

Weirdly, my first boss was an extra also -- he apparently ended up playing one of the Diva's veiled entourage so it's impossible to tell it was him!

I was an extra in the original John Waters' Hairspray, and I also play harmonica. I wonder if there is something about being a harmonica player that makes someone a good extra. lol

That latch is sometimes called a snapslide and its made by Hartwell. Used all the time on certain aircraft panels.

That cat carrier definitely would look great with lights. It's amazing how my brain lit up when you turned it around and revealed what it was. Props are magic.

I love that Wayland-Yutani went so deep into manufacturing that they started making over-engineered pet carriers. I assume it’s electronics are designed to allow it to function in a vacuum. It’s probably also internally heated. Adam, now you’re going to have to find a movie-accurate Jonesy.😜

As both a fan of the Alien franchise and as a veterinary technician, I would lose my complete shit if someone brought their cat or small dog into my clinic in that animal carrier. That's amazing and it seems perfectly functional and safe for it's intended purpose!

Man it's crazy how instantly memorable the designs were because as soon as i saw the fins on the base with the rounded golden shape before the packaging was even fully removed, i was like that Leonardo DiCaprio meme where he's pointing at the screen! That's SO COOL! I adore the Fifth Element for much the same reason i adore Raiders of the Lost Ark and Galaxy Quest, they're some of my mum's favourite films and loved watching them with her when i was a kid on days off from school. I still enjoy watching them with her but somehow these days watching stuff doesn't have the same charm as when you were a kid and it was a VHS recorded off the TV with occasional advert cuts and all. What a cool prop!

Adam, Out of all of the professional prop makers you know, who is the biggest collector of props? If I were in the prop making business, I would make a duplicate for my personal collection of everything I am making and get as many originals back as possible once production is done with them. Not only would it give me an incredible collection, but if I ever needed to reproduce them in the future, I would still have everything to make it exactly the same.

I've always loved the Mondoshawan design... really strange in a really lovely way. I have Masterlock M40s on a few toolboxes around the shop and they always remind me of the Mondoshawan bodies.

Adam, you helped foster a love of curiosity, science and challenging the things around me since I was very young. When you made the comment about commitment to sparkle motion. I fell in love all over again. Gosh Darnit it is awesome to see the people I look up to also enjoy things that I do.

There is restoration channel with a ginger named Avril that shows up during the projects. It's a super chilled out channel and she's a super chilled out ginger.

When I saw the Mandoshowan in the thumbnail I was like, NO Way! Then, he trots out Jonesy's carrier... I tried making one back in the late 80's but could never get the plexi to bend at the correct angle. I'm jealous Adam...

Now I want to make something like that cat carrier for my own cats. Add in some blinky lights, a little EKG/Heart/Respiration monitor, maybe a mic inside to drive a display of the sounds being made, lights, a little scrolling sign to display the cat's name, good times. Maybe even link it to the chip in the cat to identify which cat is in the carrier. Freak the vet out a bit.

Wow I almost couldn’t believe what I was seeing. That spike latch was widely used in the aircraft industry for external access panels. My experience with them was with military aircraft.

Won't lie, about halfway through the unwrapping I had an idea it was either Jonesy's crate...or the self-destruct briefcase for the Nostromo. That Adam is so over the moon about having the Jonesy crate speaks volumes of his level of fanboy-ness for all things movie ephemera. Now I want to see some actually make the 'Boom-case,' though. 😛

Slightly baffled to see a Jula box! :) The first Jula, physical, store (before that it was solely mail order) was/is in the next town (25km/20 minute drive). When I was a kid it was like a monthly thing to take a trip to the Jula store (every time dad needed a tool or something else for a project, and sometimes just "why not") The props are cool too! :D

The detail where the air gets in at the back, and either side of the door switch are replicating the floor tiles (nice!) that were also used in Star Wars. Most easily seen as the ceiling of Princess Leia's cell on the Death Star. (2187 - but you knew that :) )

Alien is by far one of the best Sci-fi franchises of all time. One of the most exciting moments for me as a father is when each child gets old enough...~12, I have/will (one more to go) watch Alien/Aliens with them. Such a good franchise!

Those are my two most favourite Science Fiction movies, I’m an avid Aliens fan where in the mid 80’s there was a collectibles shop in Manchester, UK. that had one of the Alien Ovomorph with the four quadrants opened as though it was going to suddenly eject an Facehugger shoot at you with its. Tail like part ready to rap around my neck! To be honest Adam, I thought that when you were unwrapping the box that it had an Ovomorph, but Jones’s cat carrier is cool. I'm a veterinary technician and I'd be absolutely thrilled to see this. I've seen people bring in their pets in stranger containers than that lol one time a guy came in with a big plastic tote bin full of pit bull puppies.

As a cat owner, I honestly would adore having a replica of that pet carrier (assuming it's actually safe), because the hatch on that thing means I wouldn't have to assemble my cat carrier around the danged cat every time I had to take him to the vet or somewhere.

As someone who buy and sells lots of stuff, I'd recommend getting a rolling plastic garbage can for packing peanuts. Easy to dump into and unload. Plus, it's mobile and has a lid!

That jula moving box is from Sweden!! (Or Scandinavia, don’t know if Jula is in more countries.) it’s a tool store (cheapish, think it’s the equivalent of harbour freight)
