I have a 1992 Nighthawk 750 that had 15/38 sprockets stock which produced 4000 rpm at 60 mph and to me the engine felt rather buzzy... I changed to 17/36 which now gives 70 mph at 4000 rpm and I like it much better.... I did not care about acceleration and in this configuration the engine feels smoother... The acceleration really is not much worse.... I weigh 190 lbs and never carry passengers.
@TheGorillaBiker

Fair enough! I haven't had any issues of any buzziness and am waaaaay happier with how it feels on fun road. I would disagree on the acceleration, not from zero but from throttle feel on fun roads. I am biased tho as I've never geared a bike to have lower revs up high and been happy.

Getting the gearing right on a bike is a great mod when done right, I guess we all have different ideas of "right" though... which possibly explains why they did what they did to the bike. I've done some changes to my GSXR... I like how it feels now, although is a bit buzzy as I've lowered the garing to make it accelerate harder... I'm still ironing out the gremlins in my speedohealer... which due to the error has added 5k miles to the speedo that the bike has not actually covered, which is a tad frustrating. Will be getting it on the road again next month, so hopefully will at least stop the mileage going mad with the latest correction I have done to the speedohealer.
@TheGorillaBiker

Yeah that's fair, just can't imagine anyone ever gearing it up that much to take away the daycent amount of fun it is now yano :) Ohhhh that sucks about the mileage, that's a pity, but re gearing GSXRs is 100% a great call :D Any interest in any of the bikes you're trying to offload? :)

I have a 2017 bonneville t120. Went up 2 teeth in the rear and it SO much better at low speed. 6th gear is actually useful during my normal riding(not on super highways) definitely recommend this mod to make your bike fit your use! Higher or lower gearing to fit your needs makes it so much better.

Yeah it's crazy how much of a difference the changes can make. I think manufacturers just set them up to be fairly middle of the road with good fuel economy etc.

That's more like it! Not a rocket-ship by the standards of today, but enough to have real world fun on the road. Certainly would be nice to hear a little bit more howl from the pipes. A good explanation I think. Time to do the washing up now. 👍

Glad to hear you got some performance back! I always hoped I would get a Nighthawk at some point. Like the Ninja 500 (GPZ 500 on the other side of the Atlantic, if memory serves) they were everywhere when I was a a kid. They both seem to be kind of rare now, relatively speaking. I guess they are all buried in garages or rusting away in back yards…

Really woke it up a lot thankfully! :) A gpz500 is on my list at some point too, really cool bikes. The nighthawks seem to pop up fairly regularly, I've seen a few since I bought mine so you could get one, the gpz tho, I've not seen one for sale in years. Sadly.most are probably just thrown somewhere forgotten about

weathers crap here lashing down windy... can feel the draughts lol you can do some mad stuff with gearing, did some silly things with cars back in the day mating gearboxes to engines that wernt designed for it, i had a 1ltr nova back in the day that had fecked up gearing but apart from the mid point in gears it flew off the mark and top end, so you could get off the go epic and once up to a decent speed it just went mad.. would have to be near red line before going from 2nd to 3rd or it was like trying to pull off from 5th lol "with my big arse on this thing" understand this full well :D when you look like donkey kong riding a tiny bike lol

I think 750cc may not be small in the scheme of bikes. A road registered GSXR 750 did a 10.5 second 1/4 mile here. That's quick man. I think the Honda may not be fast like that but 750 is a great sized engine (I know you know all of this already).
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
That's a very fair comment, 750 in general isn't small, the power on this particular 750 is "small" :) While I knew it it's actually something very important to point out as a 750 sportsbike is rapid, I wouldn't want people to watch this and think that'd be a nice easy starter bike, just because this one would be :)

I really like the nighthawk 750 videos I watch all I can find . I’m curious how many miles you can go on one tank . Also you could talk about this bike how this bike takes a little more skill to ride compared to new bikes with dual disk an anti lock brakes .

It's a great bike :) Ehhhh I usually fill up between 100-120 miles, I haven't ran it empty or anything though. I don't think it does really, having ridden high powered modern bikes with all the assists, they still feel way more like they are actively trying to kill you than the nighthawk, it handles very well, very good mannered bike. Buuuuuut the brakes are the difference for sure.

It BARELY fit. It was fairly wedged in there. I like the 15, feels a lot more reactive on the road now. Caressed them and whispered sweet nothings. Nah I drained them and cleaned them, I've ordered a rebuild kit also as they don't look fantastic internally. The fuel line from the tank is also goosed so I have to replace that too.
