This week I'm finally testing out my kayak livewell. I was really hoping to kayak fish for Crappie and keep my catch in this Hobie kayak livewell but as you will see, that did not go as planned! However, I still managed to catch some nice bass doing some top water fishing! Follow along and I will make this kayak livewell better than new!!

You have to either leave switch on and allow the red valve to do the draining, or fill and plug the input and raise the red valve. It's not a bad livewell by any means. Especially for saltwater anglers.

You have to leave the switch on so that it continuously pumps water into the tank and then the overflow goes out through the drain. If you turn off the pump, you would have to put the included plug over the water intake inside the tank. That is also how you hold water prior to getting to the lake.

It requires forward motion to fill AND its just a recirculate tank. Not meant to leave the drain open at all. Its meant to refresh the water from time to time and leave the drain closed. One of the things I don't like about it. You're scooping hot water from the surface. Go just 1-2 feet down and the water is much cooler. I also didn't like the 6v system. I swapped to a 13 gallon shad tank I run on the back of the PA14. I can keep shad or minnows alive all day with NO water changes. I power the 12v pump on the shad tank with my 24v lithium TM battery, with a 24v-12v step down. No bubbler needed because the shad tank automatically bubbles.

I bought the XL Hobie Livewell for saltwater use and had a miserable experience too. I dont have a ton of money to waste, so i was very disappointed when i found out that i cpuldnt trust Hobie with a simple live well. I went back to my $25 Cool Bubbles bucket. It’s insulated and easy to use. Plus i feel like its less weight for me to haul around

Lights are terrific. My xl live well needs priming. Someone in California sells a tube extension cut at a forward intake angle. If you carry the kayak backwards no more wet feet and it’s fun to drone her on and off. Love your videos brother! Over

I think the boat has to be moving forward to force water up into the tank. Also I think you initially need to pump the water into the tank by hand with that red handle .

Yes, I have the same live well you do and I also believe that you have to be moving around 2 to 3 miles an hour to force water into the intake, but I still have problems with it, it is problematic and difficult to use. Would love to see a video on a modification. Love your videos and tight lines.

Is the battery a 12v? Mine didn’t pump enough because the battery was a 6v

Man a few weeks ago I had the exact same thing happen - had to free all my minnows because I couldn’t get my brand new Hobie XL live well to pump correctly. I have since added a primer bulb to get it started and also an on/off switch for plugging the pump hole. Hoping I have a better experience next time.

Yikes. I have the same model and just flat out gave up on mine. It’s too bulky/heavy for the headache it’s caused

Surprised the hose down thru scupper was long enough. This Hobie V-2 livewell model isn't recommended for a PA, due to shorter hose. The one you have is recommended for the Outback and other Hobie models. There is another, larger model-XL recommended only for the PA series. However, both livewells require the yak to get up to some speed forward, then start the pump motor. The forward motion primes the pump motor. You can circumvent this installing a primer bulb on the outlet side of the pump motor, then the yak being stationary, you hand pump to prime the motor, then flip the motor start switch.
