Been fishing from a couple different kayaks over the past few years. Have flipped one of them twice. Advise from experience: Use your vest. Tie EVERYTHING off (phone, keys, hat, sunglasses, paddle, ect.) if you want to keep it. Put floats on your rods. Get a gatorade bottle to pee in. Get a foam butt cushion. Use watertight containers. Oh yea, keep having fun!

Richard get you a rope with an anchor big enough to hold you in place. So you can make several cast without drifting off.More time on the water is the best practice getting comfortable in the kayak. Hard to beat being out on a creek and river and enjoying listening to the birds and watching wildlife and enjoying Gods creations.

I'm 63 and bought a kayak about 3 years ago. I was on Ky. Lake with it about a week ago and caught 5 white bass, a catfish, a small mouth bass, and several bluegill. After you get use to paddling it, you'll be surprised how far you can go in a day. Hope you catch some crappie out of it soon.

It might be a good idea to start out going up river, then when you get tuckered out, you can let the river take you back to your truck. I would hate to be down river a couple of miles, and have to fight the current all the way back when I am tired, that would be a bummer.

What ive found is important to me while kayak fishing is to be comfortable in my legs/hips area and to be able to get stuff out of my hands quickly. I tether the paddle to the kayak so i can drop it and not worry about it. My yak has underseat storage so thats my catch all. It has molded in rod holders on each side so i lay the rod down securely and quickly.

Soel Ben-Yahawadah a couple other ideas. Put Velcro around the boat, the plastic side. Then attach the felt side to items you want close but don’t want to lose...small tackle boxes, sunglasses case, base of cup holder, even put bands of it around your paddle so you can stick it to the boat. I also take a small 2 ft. or less canoe paddle with me. Works great for shallow water or to steady yourself getting in and out. That way you won’t damage a much more expensive kayak paddle. Get the correct length and the lightest kayak paddle you can afford. Get a life jacket that the top half is netted, for freedom of movement. For an anchor, a rubber coated dumbbell or weight disk, 5 lb should do. Won’t hang up like a claw anchor.

Since my wife and I are getting up in age, we added a 3.5 hp outboard to the boat to make it easier for us. We live in the Okeechobee area so there are plenty of canals and small lakes to explore. Welcome to the yak world, i thoroughly enjoys watching your videos. Fishing off the kayak allows you to get where the big boats can’t! Tight lines

I’m excited to see the kayak videos. I love your creek videos. I look forward to every new video you release. I find your videos the most relaxing and satisfying fishing videos to watch. You clearly are an expert to the highest degree, yet you are so humble. Love it.

Richard, get you a plastic creek boat with a small trolling motor set up, foot pedals for steering and digital maximizer. Same concept as kayak, can get in tight places and shallow water, but don't have to paddle, and you can cover more water and keep your hand pretty much free controlling the boat!
