In this video, we test the new Burton Genesis Step On binding in Colorado. The women's version of this binding is called the Escapade. We get the opportunity to test these bindings in all different conditions and put them to the test. Are they more responsive than the regular step ons? Are they worth the extra money? Are they as comfortable as Burton says they are? We answer all those questions.
Big thanks to the Chicago Burton Flagship Store for helping make this video possible.

Great review chief! I think you are correct that the hammock eliminates fatigue, but they are supposed to do two other things. The first is they should offer the same response edge to edge, but allow for more smooth tip to tail movement. For me this makes them feel more cruisey and fluid, but bite when you need them to. The second thing is more relevant to the strap versions - the soft hammock material grips the boot, so you don't have to tighten the straps down so hard and you won't get heel lift, also adding to the comfortable and cruisey feel. All the best, Rich in Sweden.

I finally got 4 days on mine... I left the levers as-is on the first day and it felt way further down than I kept trying to reach for and missed. I moved the levers before the 2nd day and it was so much easier to visually find and use. I ended up using my back arm to do it. I got to ride in some wet/heavy pow and didn't have problems. I'd clear the base before stepping in and have to clear where the lever was to eject. I can strap in standing up anyway, but the process seemed faster overall. I need to work on my in-motion unstrapping and I never tried to step in while moving. There is a learning curve. I had problems w/ the clips not holding my pants and just resorted to lifting the pants up when stepping in. I kinda needed to butter to get my back pinkie toe clicked the first 3 days, but the 4th day it just clicked in. I had one incident where I thought I heard clicks, but when I started moving, the heel wasn't in. I told a guy w/ Step Ons and he told me to jump in place to make sure that everything is in. The Photons boots were the only ones that came in 14 Wide. I had a rough go at adjusting them w/ my wide feet/skinny ankles. They were either too tight or too lose. I have the non-Step On Photons and they just seemed easier to get right w/ the separate top/lower adjustment. The Step-On top adjustment still seems to tighten everything. Needing a long #2 screwdriver to adjust forward-lean kinda sucked. When I last had Burton Bindings, I was used to F4, so I started at F3 and thought they were really responsive. I liked it but wanted to see F2. The resort's tool table was missing the #2. So on the second day, I tried F2 and it was "fine", but I ended up going back to F3 for days 3 and 4.

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience. With more riding time you’ll understand them so much more and they just get more fun to ride. When in doubt, just lift the heel a little bit to see if you’re in. If I lift my heel and I’m only clicked in once, I’ll either Ollie or just hit a little bump and I’m clicked in twice right away. I do agree with you about the forward lean. I wish there was an easier way with that. Luckily the resorts I’ve gone to had the correct screwdriver.

I'm getting mine Genesis tomorrow and will ride them over weekend. I ordered regular bindings but the store had run out them and as apology they offered me Genesis at extra discount. I made a quick decision but was not 100% sure bc earlier I tested regulars for 1 day. Your video gave me confidence, that I made a right choice. P.S. I went with Ion boots, bc I'm used to ride stiff boots and I'm into carving, mine previous ones were Driver X. I tried Photons but for me they were too soft. Can't wait to see how these bindings and boots will work together, hope for even better experience with Genesis.

Great review. I got the genesis step on with the photon boot. Super comfortable and responsive. Best of both worlds. I did the mod you recommended in another video to change the release to the inside and at 6’3” it saves my back. Only question. I dialed the forward lean to none and it’s easier to get in. I didn’t see any loss of heel side performance. So could we take the high back off completely ? Your mod proves we really only need the heel cup with the clicker part. I feel like in these my toe connection engages way before the high back on a heel side turn.

It is possible to remove the highback for sure. Last season I rode most of the season without the highback. The highback portion does act like a spacer where the screws go in, so you would have to fill that space with washers.

I’ve been boarding since 92 and remember the troubles I had with the first generation step-in bindings. Really excited about these bindings, but it’s the boot comfort I’m concerned with. I LOVE the comfort of my current soft boot and hear the Photon boot (even in wide) is really stiff, which concerns me. Any feedback you have on the boot is really appreciated. BTW…been watching a ton of reviews and yours was the most helpful by far. Thanks!
@themidwestshredder
@themidwestshredder Жыл бұрын
Hi Danielle, very cool! The photon which is the women’s Felix, is a stiffer boot for sure. The softest step on boot is the ritual and it’s very comfortable. I wear the men’s version sometimes which is the swath. Soft, flexy, and very easy to put on and take off. The next boot that is a little stiffer and kind of a medium flex is the limelight. Ritual has two boa dials for lower and upper boot adjustments. It has the articulated cuff which allows it to flex. The limelight is very simplified and has one boa dial. The Felix soft is a little stiff but has a little more flex at the ankles than the regular Felix. If you’re able to try them out at a store, that would be best. Boot fitment is super important with the Step Ons.

I watched this video when you first posted it because I was looking for some "real world" comments and feedback on the Burton Step On system. I didn't invest in them at the time, I couldn't justify the cost and my current boot/binding system is working well. I am just now watching the video again trying to pick up a bit more information on the overall system. I still can't really justify the cost but, based on what I am hearing/reading, the Step Ons have come a long way even since last season. I was able to find a set of the "standard" '22-'23 Step Ons at a good discount and looking to go with the Photon Wide boots. I ride the whole mountain and that setup looks as though it will "compliment" my riding style. At 57 years young not having to bend over to strap in will be a big plus..... not that I can't but, the body hurts a lot more than it used to. 😉 Thanks for posting up straightforward content, I subbed ya' this time. 😁 Keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤️🏂 Randy

Hi Randy, I think you will love them. One thing to remember is that the quality of the boots are top notch. I own both (photon and swath) boots and I prefer the swath or the rulers over the photons for what I do. The swaths are super comfortable and they’re softer flex. I’m able to butter and they work for me in the park. They’re also super easy to put on and take off. The photons are great boots if you like something super stiff and carving is your main thing. In this video I was riding the swath. The rulers I would say are kind of in between the swath and the photon. The ruler is super comfortable as well and has one BOA.

Hey man, really appreciate your videos on the step ons. I just bought the genesis based on your videos. I still haven’t got boots yet but from what I saw on your comparison vid, as a beginner rider, I think the swath might be the best as they aren’t too stiff and also allow that dual boa control. Is this a good choice? My main question however is, I know the 2021 or 2020 model boots fit on the 2022 bindings, but do they also work to not make the chatter noise everyone complained about on the 2021 and before models. Also, is the difference with the 2022 and 2021 boots only the colour design ? Cheers
@themidwestshredder
@themidwestshredder 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, the clicking noise does go away still with the old boots and newer 2022 bindings. The clicking came from the toe hook design on the older bindings. The Swath would definitely be a good choice for you. Super comfortable, not stiff, and super easy to take on and off.

Thank you for posting this video dude I love it!! Im going to get the step ons either way but Im at a rock in a hard place on what version to choose. It's between the reflex x or genesis reflex. Im leaning towards the genesis. I had a question for you when say responsive what do you mean? Is it easier to whip turns on your toe and heel edge as well as stop and start on a dime when using the Genesis reflex or reflex x? What binding do you think will be better when doing these two things?
@themidwestshredder
@themidwestshredder 6 ай бұрын
Hi, I’m talking responsiveness getting on a heel or toe edge carving or stopping. The step on x are the stiffest and most responsive. The regular step on and even the Genesis step on are also really responsive if you have a stiffer boot like photon or the ion. It really comes down to how stiff of a set up you want. Not everyone is looking for the stiffest most responsive set up. It’s all preference.

@@themidwestshredder Do you know if there is a difference between the genesis and the re:flex genesis? Or is this naming just new and the binding stayed the same?
@themidwestshredder
@themidwestshredder 4 ай бұрын
@@jnfyeah that is the same binding. The Genesis step on is only made in reflex. Reflex is the style in which the binding mounts to the board. Burton also makes bindings that are called EST. That binding base can only be used with channel boards like the ones Burton makes. You cannot use it on other brand boards that do not have a channel system. The reflex binding base can be mounted on any snowboard brand. That’s why I prefer it. The non step on (strap) Genesis binding is made in EST and reflex. The step on Genesis is only reflex at this time. Hope that makes sense.

Change my mind mate. On a scale 1 to 10 , how much better is this version then the previous one ? Great vid btw

Classic is classic and we all know what they feel like already. Pull the trigger and try something new. Don’t keep wondering what these are like, just try them. I own good quality strap bindings myself. I wouldn’t be riding them and making videos for people if they sucked. I love snowboarding and love turning lap after lap. Believe me, getting in and out fast is awesome and a lot of fun. These are also light and responsive. The version 2s are great and eliminate the clicking and the extra play in the front that you mentioned. People who are not trying them or giving them a chance are missing out, trust me. When you first try them, use them for multiple days before you judge them. They get better and better the more you ride them. If you don’t like them, throw them on eBay and they will sell.

Hi, just depends how you like your set up. The photon is awesome for groomers and carving. It’s stiff and puts the board on an edge instantly. If you like a more medium flex, try the ruler or the swath. Never hurts to try something new. They work I can tell you that. If you never try, you never know. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey man question for anyone, I had to get the Photon because I needed a wide boot so that's what I went with and I also ride a Capita Mercury what binding would you suggest? I'm guessing the Genesis is softer or maybe about the same stiffness then the regular step on binging and the step on X is the stiffest but with the step on system already being highly reactive could I get buy with the Genesis or the regular step on binging while having the Photon boot and a stiffer board like I ride the Capita Mercury? Thanks in advance.
@themidwestshredder

If you can afford the Genesis and they’re available, go with those. The hammock on the highback is comfortable in different conditions and it’s still responsive like the regular step on. Everything I mentioned in this video is true. I still want a pair of those. If you want extreme stiffness and response then go with the X.

Hey Jimmy, after watching you reviews on these I went and bough the Genesis and Photon boots. Originally I had a UK 10.5 and the boot was sweet in the binding, however the boot was too big and I got this swapped for a UK10. Since getting the smaller boot (still with the correct L size binding) I am getting a heel clicking and a very small amount of play on the heel catch. This never happened with the UK 10.5 boot. Has this happened to you at all? I've seen a number of videos of people complaining about this. Speaking to my local Burton dealer they aren't at all helpful.
@themidwestshredder
@themidwestshredder 2 жыл бұрын
I believe that the movement some people have (some more than others) is caused by the boot itself. With me, it doesn’t affect my riding one bit, and I don’t get a clicking. Let me see if I can find a fix for this.

I remember hearing a rep say the first Step On was designed to have some play in the front to mimic the feel of a strap binding, but then everyone complained about the sound. I wonder if getting rid of the play in the front means it no longer feels the same as a traditional strap binding?

I think the idea was good but it wasn’t necessary. The binding is still nice and responsive with the play but I think most people would rather not have the play. @@snowboarddoc6382 hi, the play in the front that the original post is referring to is different than what the video you posted is showing. What is happening in the video is normal though. The heelback portion of the highback is supposed to move together with the boot a little. In the video, one moves a little more than the other, but it won’t affect the performance. If you were fully locked in without movement at the lower portion of the highback, it would be hard to get on your toe edge. This movement is similar to how an ankle strap stretches as you get on your toes. You don’t think it’s stretching, but it is.

Hi, you have to treat the Step On binding just like your strap binding in this situation. It’s no different. If snow is on the foot pad, brush it off and then step on. I don’t know people who love to strap into a traditional binding with snow on the footpad. That doesn’t feel the best. Don’t let that stop you from getting a set of these. They work excellent. Hi Kevin, if you’re new to riding, the Flying V would be a friendlier board to learn on. It’s less catchy than a camber board. The truth is that you can learn on anything, but your chances of catching an edge are less on a rocker, flat board, or a hybrid like a Flying V.

I got the white Genesis binding, it looks great and feels good. However my mesh hammock broke off on the first day, it just disappeared. I assumed it came off when I unlatched... The Mesh is held on by a single flimsy rivet and the boot latch can catch and break it off without you knowing. The biggest problem when I contacted burton is that they don’t hold white spare parts so they were going to replace the whole Hi-back with a black one so I will have mis-match blinding. Later I was told they didn’t even have a spare Gensis Hi-back so they can’t help me. They offered a refund but I was on the mountain and no local shop sells the genesis so I was stuck with a broken binding for the rest of the trip. Without the mesh, the boot latch gets caught in the hi-back hole so you can’t easily step into the binding. This really wrecked my holiday and was not impressed with how the burton warranty department handle this…. One would expect more from such an expensive binding…

That’s cool, you will like them. The two clicks when you engage the boot into the back of the binding is normal. Then you click the boot into both toe cleats in the front of the binding. You won’t hear clicking when you ride them. The older step on bindings would click near the front toe cleats here and there. There were easy solutions to get rid of that clicking. The new bindings don’t do that with the newer design. Not sure if I answered your question. If not, let me know. Thanks.
