I bought a 1996 Solectria Force, an electric Geo Metro. There are maybe a handful of Force's left in the world and this one is in pretty good condition... but there are no manuals for a car they only built 400 of. Today we're rescuing the air conditioning by rebuilding the DC motor that runs it.

Just a tip, after owning probably a dozen of these over the last 15 years I found out that 98-01 Chevy Metros have the exact same dash as the 95-97 but they don't turn to dust like the 95-97 dash. They are chemically different in composition and not crazy difficult to swap so if you find a dash from a later Chevy version it will fix that issue. Or get a dash mat lol

If nothing else, I would hope you’d do an operational demonstration of your Microsoft CE head unit for your “Tech Throwback” channel. I don’t think this Solectria merits your head unit, though. Just a cheap Bluetooth head unit from Walmart seems more appropriate. BTW…I wonder if people throw old Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi I-MiEV or no-name Li-On batteries in these Solectria cars to lighten them and give them more range. Would that be a good future subject for your channel? I don’t know…you be the judge! I really enjoy your channel.

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger EV with dead acid batteries in my garage. It only had 25 miles of range when I bought it, so watching this brought back great memories of driving my truck back in 2007 the last time it was running. Draining those lead acid batteries below 50% charge does permanent damage, so you are reducing the range each time you do that. Love seeing some old lead out on the road.

Window winders are typically held on by a wire "c type" clip. This enables then to be just pushed on, but not so easy to remove once engaged. A hook made with something like a coat hanger can usually be used to hook onto it, and slide it out. Handle then comes off easily. Or you can push it out from the open "C" side, more difficult as you have to engage 2 sides of the "C" clip - and spacing also varies. Battery range may simply be an issue with battery type or quality, lots of variation between manufactures.

White lithium not effected by water as much too. The rag to get the door crank off is to pull the clip out of the slot. You get it behind the crank and pull back and forth, sawing motion, till the rag snags on the clip and works out. Then pull the crank.

This is a very interesting series about this early EV. My vote for the radio would be what is in it now, to minimize power consumption. Also, could you change all of the bulbs (especially headlamp bulbs) to LED, and see a gain in its range? And also, as a true amateur who has removed headliners and replaced the fabric on 3 cars in my life, I would like it if there is an episode of you removing the headliner board and replacing the drooping one in there now. Hint: 3M 38808 Headliner and Fabric Adhesive is really sticky stuff, but don't press the fabric on with your fingertips. I ended up with some small areas that will show that mistake forever..

JRGo, Fun video and restoration work! Neat tricks and methods on so many things! The window cranks have a little snap-clip you can remove using a paint can opened slipped behind the handle just right, Its hard to do but I've taken most off without breaking. Your raneg and range per Ah seems low. Driving 30-40mph, I remember being able to get as good as 1Ah per mile at 50-80 degF and no heat or A/C on. The rather lamer "Normal" drive mode helps maximize the range by reducing full power to a paultry 20kW versus the 40kW available in "Power". Econ limits power to just 12.5kW. The car can do 45 miles on 45-50Ah new set of 13 of the OEM GelTech East Penn group 27 batteries. This is all these sealed lead batrteries could put out to get them to have a nice long and reliable life. Putting Lithium in along with a full BMS allows 100 miles or 200 miles with a tiny 350lb pack of LiFePO4 or LiNMC cells and also providing better acceleration, handling and load-carrying capacity. The packs are 450 lb less than the EOM 832lb lead lack. I've never managed to get the A/C going in my Forces but I also didn't really care so much as we have few hot days in the cold NorthEast, just use the heat alot. James

Glad to see at least one Solectria Force on the road. Few months ago a buddy of mine tried to get me to buy one that his father has sitting in the garage. Car is exceptionally clean but sadly the lead acid batteries all need to be replaced. Doing the math it wasn't worth purchasing. Outside of the niche realm of collectors who find these vehicles cool the cost of batteries is probably why most of them have been junked. Doesn't make much sense when a cheap Nissan Leaf is exponentially more capable. As others pointed out swapping out the batteries for something with more energy density would be a great way to keep this thing alive.

Upside is it charges in 8 minutes on a DC fast charger, 4 hours at home. Never left me stranded, but it rarely goes more than about 20 miles from home. The most appropriate, period-correct head unit choice for this vehicle is: a gaping hole in the dash where the radio was, a few random dangling wires, and a small hand-lettered cardboard “NO RADIO” sign attached to one of the side windows with yellowing Scotch tape. Extra points awarded for glass fragments on the floorboards which continue to appear despite repeated vacuuming.

Something is odd here. I owned this car a little over a year ago and I was able to reliably get 40 miles of range. Also the capacity of the batteries is 100ah, somethings not adding up here. I would check out the battery wiring, controller and mostly the BMS, 20 miles is way under what this car should realistically be getting. Also make sure the batteries aren't frozen! Frozen batteries can be dangerous and damaging to the car

For the radio, since it's a GM and had a double din, how about a nice CD Cassette combo radio from a Buick one that has a graphic EQ and does RDS. Also, replace the speakers with some nice efficient JBL or Kenwood speakers. Then you get something nice that does not draw a lot of power. I think you said that there was a Lithium battery option for the car originally, so you might be able to do a Lithium Iro Phospate battery sway by just reprogramming the original charger and controller. It would be interesting to see some of those serial lines hooked up and being monitored to see what they do, or even pulling the code from the EPROMS in the electronics.

I applaud your optimism JR, but what a terrible EV with only a 20 mile range..similar to a golf cart. My RAV4 Prime which is a PHEV, even though it is rated at 42 miles EV range, routinely gives us near 50 miles of pure EV travel before switching over to a normal gasoline hybrid. We only travel about 50 miles daily, so going to a gas station is about a once a month activity. How is the EV range on your 2017 Gen 2 Chevy Volt? I sold my Gen 2 Volt which would give us up to 55 miles range in good weather. The Volt is a great vehicle, but was not good in the snow.

I love your excitement over this. Hey, if this is charging on 110, and it charges so quick, it'd probably be a good idea to keep an extension cord in the trunk. I'm certain anyone would let you plug into their house or business if you got low on juice away from home.

I'd love to see all the electronic draw items replaced with modern items. LEDs replacing all the lights, HE headunit, etc. Maybe toss in some low rolling resistance tires. Be fun to see how much you can get from the old powertrain.

As someone who owned the 2DR Hatch version of the Geo Metro, I am pretty sure it is impossible to accelerate slower than that little 3cyl Flintstone mobile did. Brought back some memories seeing the inside of that car and taking the door panels apart. At one time, I did radio swaps every year or so, and had it down to a 30 min swap.

Such a good series, if you ever consider an EV upgrade maybe look into the first gen Chevy volt batteries. Huge upgrade and very versatile.

Funny you should mention the head unit. I still have a NIB Blaupunkt Dallas SQM-88 stalk-mount AM/FM radio that I’ve owned for over twenty years. I’m waiting to build my perfect ‘80s German car, probably a Vanagon Westfalia or MB 560SEC.

It would be really neat to add a J1772 charge port. Standalone interfaces exist like the SimpCharge that handle everything and provide an AC power out for an onboard charger. I'd be curious if swapping the lead acid batteries to lithium would provide more power or if it's limited by the inverter.

Fyi there is a small metal clip between the window crank and the door panel that needs to be pushed off to remove the window crank correctly. They make a special tool to remove the clip but u can wedge something thin enough between there to pop the clip off. It's the same type of C retaining clip used elsewhere on the car.

J.R. If you want to get more mileage on the Geo, Put a big solar generator in the trunk ... 1000 watt or even a 2000 watt plugged in as you drive, like a Jackery or a Eco flow, should give you an extra 50 miles, then charge them both when your in the garage.

On my first car, a '77 VW Rabbit, I painted the wheels black one day just to see how it looked. It looked kind of stupid....But then my friend told me to put some "beauty rings" or chrome rings that sit on the outside of the wheel. This turned out fantastic and only cost about $12.

22:12 are you intending to upgrade or replace the batteries? You should get 50% or lead acid rated capacity. You can also make sure the lead acid batteries are equalized to squeeze some added capacity, they could be out of balance

Manual window crank handles are held in by a retainer clip. Push the trim ring towards the door card and you should be able to see the retainer clip behind the handle. Push that clip out and then the handle will easily slide off.

Boy, that dash brings back some memories. Like I said I put 268,000 miles on mine. There was one time at band camp..... In Vermont where I buried the needle well over 95 miles an hour getting back to a gas station where all of my snow skiing materials had been stolen out of my car. It took a while to get there but even with leaving it at that speed I got 35 miles to the gallon. When I got back to the gas station I filled the car back up to find out how much 100 miles an hour hurt the gas mileage.

I kind of want to see JR mod it with new-age batteries. Also, could change the resistance on the potentiometer/manual to electric throttle link and fix the throttle and battery waste. I suspect the pedal dump would be killing battery power over smooth power engagement.

You should convert all the lights to LED and use the LED turn signal relays every little bit helps. Also, the rust on the wheels is very common for the geo Metro's I've had three of these and every single one had the wheels rusted to it to the point that I had to use a sledgehammer to get the wheels off.
