Welcome back to another Lost Bits Redux video! Today we're revisiting one of the first Lost Bits video's I've ever made as we once again check out the original Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64. 2:18 Fun fact: because some of this unused audio was Captain Falcon's, they didn't need Ryō Horikawa to record any new audio for the next few games, meaning that it took until the announcement of Min Min in 2020 for them to bring back his voice actor. Yes, they brought Ryō back after over two decades just to record him slurping noddles.

I feel like there were different audio clips between games like Melee and Brawl at least, unless those were unused until later games too. Even between Brawl and Smash 4 his hurt lines sound different. It is interesting if they actually managed to not bring him back for all that time using just unused lines

@@adamspeiser6449It may sound like the voice actor recorded new lines in Melee and Brawl, but this is cause they used alternate takes for Captain Falcon. Heck, the final smash sound bite in the original Smash is different from what we hear in Brawl. And he wasn’t the only case. In future games, existing/returning characters were not re-recorded. Anything unused during the original recording sessions would just be used in newer installments.

They've also been using Rachel Lillis' voice for Jigglypuff and recycling the same takes in Melee all the way to Ultimate... Really hope she gets better health-wise

One thing that always bugs me when anyone talks about the Smash prototype is Ryuoh. It's a place name. I'm not a fan of seeing it translated as Dragon King. We don't typically translate place names in other languages, so why here? It loses the nuance that the scenery of the background is actually Ryuoh-cho Japan. Satoru Iwata said in an Iwata Asks that he got the codename from the background. I wish people would at least acknowledge this when talking about early Smash. It's a little piece of the history that goes often unnoticed by non-Japanese speaking fans.

Dragon King is not exactly an accurate name for the game. Hal Labratory Office happened to be located in Ryōū, Japan. And Ryōū happens to translate roughly to Dragon King Essentially, the game was unlikely to ever really be called Dragon King. Put it this way, its like if a New York developer decided to make a fighting game, and used the name "New York, The Fighting Game"

The beta was called Ryuuo the Fighting Game. It’s named after the city in the stock photo and isn’t supposed to be literally translated to “dragon king”

One regional difference I've never seen anyone bring up is how Donkey Kong's name, when selected, is unchanged in the Japanese version, while the international version shortens it to DK. On the character select screen, the name is D. Kong.

The reason for it being different internationally was to avoid copyright issues with Universal and King Kong, plus DK is a more iconic shortform anyway

@@somethingsomething7903not true. Nintendo was already sued by Universal in 1982 because of donkey Kong similarities to King King. Nintendo won the lawsuit so that wouldn’t have been the reason they shortened it to DK.

You can actually put Kirby into his helpless state after his Up-B. It's just VERY rare when this happens. It has happened to me once in Dreamland and a few other times in Saffron City. It happens when you use Up-B near the very edge, and after landing you start falling on the next frame because of how close you are to the edge of the platform you landed on. Kirby then starts his Free-Fall animation.

You also can get Kirby in the anim with the forward grab throw, if you bounce yourself off of the platform and freefall after you're thrown away from your target. I think Yoshi also enters freefall after his egg throw if you start it from midair and fall long enough to switch animations. Source: I used to spam grabs throws forward against the top platform kirby team and then use the bounce to land on the left platform, usually went into the dive animation. For Yoshi I'm less sure, but I missed the final egg throw so many tines in break the targets that I SWEAR either my brain is gaslighting me or I saw that ground-pound like animation so often that I knew exactly what a no-recovery fall state was before I realized it was an intended visual cue you can't recover in that stance.

I'm surprised you didn't mentioned that both Samus and Luigi have missing hitboxes in their up air and dash attack respectively This can be reimplemented by altering a single bit of data in the game (apparently). What's really interesting is that in the next game this was kept as a choice for Samus, but Luigi still was not fixed or they did a really similar mistake with his dash attack. Anyway Great video!!!

I'm not too surprised to learn Fox actually had some spoken lines of dialog that got cut out... not unlike what they did with him in Melee, but only keeping his "Mission Complete" victory line and his "come on" taunt, being the only English lines he ever says. I'm also not too surprised there were plans to have flashing effects like lots of other fighting games had like Marvel vs Capcom 2, but considering the timing of when Smash 64 came out, they likely had a change of heart after the whole infamous Pokemon anime episode with Porygon.

_Battle Royal_ is also part of the title in Japan, as the title translates to *Battle Royal Smash Brothers.* This can be seen in the menu background. _Ike_ actually means *go!* as in charging forward, or *Come on, please hit!" if you were aiming for a target and throwing/shooting/etc. Tho I think it might be used in that first sense in Star Fox 64. But I haven't played it in Japanese much.

8:28 These weren't used because the render routine for them doesn't support scaling. The game still scales them in real time, the render routine doesn't support the given scale. The codes to enable them change the routines associated with them to ones that do support scaling.

Interestingly, the characters with up specials that don't put them into helpless falling (such as Yoshi, Jigglypuff) do actually go into them in the latest games since at least one item can actually force a hapless victim into that state.

11:20 Saying 行け is "Come on" will probably give people the wrong idea. The nuance is backwards. Rather than "come (towards me)", it means to "go (to that)". If the plan was to make Fox's final smash be like it is in Ultimate, where he commands his comrades to help him take down an enemy, then this utterance would fit contextually. Moreover, I don't want people to mistake this as the "Come on" that Fox says in Melee as his taunt. That phrase comes from かかってこい (come at me). If you switch the game's language to Japanese, he'll say either the English or the Japanese phrase at random for his taunt, but they mean the same thing.

If Final Smashes were added in this game, what would they have been for most of the cast? Mainly for DK, Kirby, Pikachu and Luigi as most elements or moves used in their Final Smashes in Brawl and later 4 and Ultimate didn't exist in 1999. Everyone else likely would've had the Final Smashes they've had from Brawl onwards (Fox's specifically likely would've been a different take on the Arwing Final Smash he has in Ultimate).

I have to wonder what Kirby's Final Smash would of been in Smash 64. Yes, I know it probably was just Chef Kirby, but Kirby has a different Final Smash in each game, so I would love to imagine Kirby getting a completely different attack.

I remember there is a 1-P mode Bonus that got its name changed from The original japanese version to the international one. If You win the match with a Motion Sensor Bomb You Will get The "Booby trap" bonus which was originally named "00 Agent" in the japanese version, a reference to GoldenEye 007. They didn't want to get in legal trouble with EON pictures it seems
