Discussions of J.S. Bach's The Art of Fugue often explore the intricacies of its structure, and some even suggest that the work was influenced by the Pythagorean theory of numbers -- in particular the pyramidal shape of the tetractys. These ideas inspired Wayne McGregor and Tauba Auerbach, whose choreography and designs for Tetractys --The Art of Fugue reflect the complex geometry of Bach's music. However, while it is fascinating to explore these links, McGregor is keen that the audience 'see the oneness' of his new ballet. In Tetractys, the combination of music, dance and design transcends the codes that fused them together; creating a new, abstract work of art.

i'm contemplating moving my career to london and being able to see these royal ballet performances live for my own eyes is a huge factor for me, not even gonna lie about it. i find them beautiful on so many levels.

Kaylee Cromling Did you move to London? I wish they would come to California, I saw them at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, that was in 1965 the first and last time.

I like most of Wayne McGregor's ballets, including this one. I have great appreciation for Lauren Cuthbertson in the piece--her supple, fluid movements complement the choreography. Watson & Osipova have been paired in other McGregor ballets and seem very much in tune with one another here. Eric moves beautifully--and looks like he is taking pleasure in the dance.

Only a genius could create a ballet to Bach's 'The Art of Fugue' and Wayne McGregor is NOT able to match Bach's genius. I wish Kenneth MacMillan had been alive to choreograph this but I suspect his modesty would have prevented him from attempting something this complex. The Art of Fugue is a very complex piece with many contrapunctal themes - well done to the pianist for bringing them to the fore in this short excerpt.

Yes, she appeared as a guest artist last year in Swan Lake.

sweetaliena Carlos is Cuban. His race/color is black (and mixed with some other hispanic heritage), but he is not African American. Keyword American. Carlos is a phenomenal dancer/choreographer and he has done a lot for ballet and for people of color, but I'm concerned with America. America that preaches diversity has yet to give the role of principle to a full blooded african american. I want someone who looks like me and demand celebration from his technical excellence and his artistry. Only one african american male I know is principle with a classical ballet company and thats jermel johnson with PA Ballet . Even so he plays character/contemporary roles (most black people do - but thats a whole 'nother can of worms). Not once has he played the snow king or any black male dancer. Most african americans are few in the classical ballet world and they either don't get in the company or get stuck in the corps (and once in a blue moon the soloist). And majority of the time its one or two and their most likely mixed to fit the white astethic. Great dancers especially Natalia. Though I think Robert Hill of Orlando Ballet is better for choreography of Bach's music.

In my opinion, the choreography doesn't really match the music. I think it needs a busier piece...

It's too busy with two couples. I don't like the music. Something is really not making it gel. Hard to fully say what. Everybody is laboring but nobody is going anywhere. Stuck in their maze. It's like too much but not enough.

That man is a complete FRAUD!! There are no new choreographers out there and there is certainly NO ONE who can really do a clever and amazingly crafted three act narrative. Cranko, Ashton, Macmillan they're all dead. They came from a theatrical age that is now gone. There were no iPads or iPhones or downloads. Ballet should be killing itself to seek our new blood that can give ballet back it's voice but we just marvel at amazing extensions and endless numbers of pirouettes. Most to the worlds artistic directors now are so so blind sided. Amazing dancers are 10 a penny. Enough with all the neo classical works. They can be beautiful but most are forgettable and unentertaining and let's face it much easy to create. I'm over it!!! McGregor is just a wank. So much respect for Monica Mason until she appointed him.
