History at The OK Corral

Күн бұрын

In the year 1837, a group of young Texas Rangers are sent out into hostile territory on an official mission: to round up a group of errant pigs that have wandered away from their headquarters at Fort Houston, and return them before they are lost to native tribespeople or predators.
However, on the bleeding edge of the early Texas frontier, even the simplest tasks can turn into a deadly predicament. This is due to one predominant factor: the roving bands of Comanche warriors who incessantly raid and terrorize the Texans, as they have done to their enemies in other tribes for decades now. Texas, for all intents and purposes, belongs to The Comanche, The Mighty Lords of The Southern Plains.
On this day, after crossing the Trinity River, four of these young Rangers will find themselves caught off guard by a band of Comanche warriors who has been tracking them for hours. The results will leave all but one of them dead before's day's end.

Houston blamed the deaths on the failure to construct sturdy buildings and a ferry, but I can't help but think whomever let those hogs loose has some questions to answer.

It was common practice to turn hogs loose to run wild in the river bottoms and collect them when needed. The classic “old yeller” includes a graphic description of the protagonist working free ranging hogs.

These tales are an invaluable asset to anyone doing living history of this period, the mindsets and shear will power of these people is hard to convey and keep in mind at fun events, keeping events like this in mind help keep reenactors accurate

I object to the use of the word "Inhumanity" in that account. The things that happened in Texas at that time were exactly what humans would do.
@bc2578
@bc2578 Ай бұрын
But "inhumanity" does not mean "non-human," it means, literally, "extremely cruel and brutal behavior," at least, according to the dictionary.
@mackdog3270

@@bc2578 My point exactly. People generally want to look at things in the most positive light possible, regardless of the reality of the situation. I believe that this is usually a good thing as our world has more than enough violence. However, this isn't an accurate portrayal of human nature, which contains just as much violence and destructiveness as it does kindness and nurturing. Call it the duality of mankind; it transcends race or location.

Bass Reeves was the real Lone Ranger but that being said if you survived an attack by the Comanche back then you had something to be both grateful and proud of there were some of the greatest Horseman that have ever set foot on the North American continent and fierce Warriors. They were so formidable that Calvary Soldier Weaponry was changed rather rapidly compensate for the fact that the Comanche could get off a lot more arrows accurately find Calvary could get off rounds of ammunition

The conflict with the indigenous peoples of this continent has been far better recorded regarding the texas struggles than in areas further east, which is a good think. However the wars with the Cherokee of Tennessee was very long and very bloody, but very poorly recorded.
