Hey Andrew! The reason for the different look of the top portion (the anvil-s "face") is that it is actually a different physical material. The face is usually hard steel, while the rest is wrought iron or cast iron (softer metal). This hard surface serves to bounce almost all the force of the hammer strike that wasn't absorbed by deformation of the piece back to the hammer in order to help the blacksmith lift the hammer again for the next strike, thereby making the whole process less tiring. As for the shiny polish on the face, it has to be that way so as not to transfer imperfections from it to the piece you're hammering on. All this I learned doing some research on anvils as preparation to watching your tutorial series, and would strongly recommend any artist to do this type of research on the actual objects they'll be modelling. It will make your models that much more realistic.

Okay, for those who are experiencing Blender crashes when texture painting, here's a workaround. Do all the way up to creating the blank image for the "polish mask". Next, go to the material properties on the right side bar Click the plus button to add a new materal slot. This should change your shader node editor to an empty one. Next, click new inside this blank editor window, and a new Principled BSDF and output will appear Now follow the steps to add the image texture node, apply the polish mask to that new node. Now go back to your material properties on the right, and you'll see the second material below your first one. Tab into Edit mode, the press A to select the entire mesh Click the new material and click the "assign" button. Tab back out of edit mode and go back to texture paint mode. Once its assigned your model should turn black, and you should now be able to texture paint to your hearts content. Once you're finished with texture painting. Save the polish mask from the image editor. Then go back to the material properties and remove the second material slot. Your painted mesh will now be available for use in the original material slot, then you should be able to proceed with the video. Hope this helps anyone struggling.
@phoenixtwo87

I forgot to mention. you'll need to go back into edit mode and assign your first slot back to the mesh after following the steps.

At 12:40 - for those using Blender 2.9 trying to find the "+" brush button. Click on the Brush icon (top left) and the brush properties appear in panel next the the main view. Under the ball with the squiggly line is a box saying "TexDraw". To the right of the is a number, then a shield then what looks like a sheet of paper with its corner turned over with another sheet of paper behind it. This is the "+" button to create a new brush. Why oh why do they change these things? Much more intuitive to have a "+" than what it's been replaced with!!!

Certainly one of the best series of tutorials I've never seen so far. Cherry on the cake, an English accent that fit perfectly with my own skill in that language (I'm French!). @blender guru *tip* I think you should cut off the lighter levels of the bump map for the polished part. Cause if you think about it in the real world, most of it is perfectly flat until some dents and bumps were just too deep to get polished. At the moment all of your top just has a slight and uniform bump which makes it look off. You could archive a better look by changing the bump map so that most of it is white until some black parts just lurk through. Like so he can see. Hope that made sense as English isn't my native language. Awesome tutorial so far.
@habadapf
@habadapf 6 жыл бұрын
+That's also how this speckly look at the corners happebed as the polished off part is getting less and less deep so more of the bumps are coming through. If you go into your bump map and use your black and white mask in "adding mode" with a right percentage most of it would become white *PLUS* your edges would get grayand the polished look would be less deep like in the real world :)

I did this. Put the color ramp between the color output of the displacement map (named "MetalCorrodedHeavy001_DISP_2K_METALNESS.jpg" which is still on Poliigon for free named as "MetalCorrodedHeavy001") and the height input of the second bump map node. Leaving the strength setting of the second bump map node the same as the first one. In my case, both bump map nodes have a strength of 0.143. On my color ramp, I left black at position 0 and set white to position 0.494. This looks really good! Exactly the same effect as the reference image where only the deeper scratches show. Thank you for the tip. Writing this in December 2023 using Blender 4.0. Tutorial still works with some minor changes, and figuring those out is a good problem solving opportunity.

@Blender Guru at 13:40 you asked why it has to be a white brush. I think it's because blender multiplies the brushcolor with the texture. So if the brushcolor is black [rgb(0, 0, 0)] and you multiply it by the all the pixels in the texture -> your texture will be entirely black. Whereas if your brushcolor is white [rgb(1, 1, 1)] and multiply it with the texture -> the texture remains the same. Thanks for the tutorial though, it was really helpful!!

Excelente tutorial Blender Guru. I find blender internal painting tools quite useful if you switch between a proper painting program like gimp or photoshop. The idea I could overlap textures in a single model is fantastic because I could work on layers in the program and then ensamble then in Gimp as a single texture And most importantly if you do that kind of operation with a painting tablet because using a mouse it's a nightmare.

Hello Andrew. Though I have followed many of your videos, this is special, such a complete and very instructive sequence - going through many steps: modelling, sculpting, baking, texturing and all filled with insight. Thank you. I have lost you at one point ever since Texturing-Part 1 (strange because you are usually so instructive and thorough). You mention that it is difficult to combine normal textures, yet you go right ahead and add the normal texture of the corroded metal and since that point, the baked normal with the sculpted relief is out of the "picture". You may re-introduce it in later videos, however at this point I am left wondering if I may have misunderstood something? Btw I challenged myself to make the pbr material off a freebie from Poliigon, one that was rusted metal of a scraped painted surface, substituting the white of the remaining paint with metal and got quite good results. An interesting exercise, I'll send you the .blend if you like.

I'm having the same issue and in the process of solving it. It's rather logical if you think in terms or versatility. If you wish I can write (I don't do videos) a tutorial on the way we have to think in order to understand. Things like the image we are painting over in texture painting is a property of the object. We have to tell the program which image of which object we paint over. The Brush texture is obvioulsy a property of the brush (which is a tool) so it's logical to find it in the tool property panel. The confusing thing is that we find the texture in the texture tab of the general panel (material, world, rendering). The only thing I still hae to find out is how I change brushes when I want to have 2 brushses whith 2 different textures.

I think the reason why you can only paint it in either white or black for the texture, is that its like its applying a mask, where white allows the texture through but black masks it out.

why couldn't you mix the bumpy bump node with a smooth default bump node and adjust the factor?

Hello! Love your videos! I don't think people don't do texture painting because it is fiddly, I think it is because it is very buggy and crashes file before can even mask a small place... This is what I am running into all the time.

@@alenafraskova6903 I found that doing the masking in Texture Paint window on the UV unwrapped image works without crashing. I hope it helps.

Hello Andrew & all. Your tutorials are awesome. I’m rookie at 3D. So in this part of tutorial when I start texture painting, just like you. It’s painting in a weird way. Even though I paint only top part, other parts of mesh gets textured as well, partially . Thought it might be a Subdivision Surf modifier, I applied it but still have issues. Any suggestions how to fix this???🙏🏻👍👍

I am watching this tutorial on repeat. I think it's a high-level but not boring tutorial. At first, the modeling was difficult, so I failed a few times, but after watching it several times, the modeling was somewhat successful, but I eventually gave up on the texture work due to the huge bug of the blender in the last texture painting. I've tried over 100 times, but blender keeps crashing for unknown reasons. It was forced to close more than 30 times while modeling. Blender is worth learning, but it seems to be an unstable program for professional or professional use. Finally, thank you for giving me the opportunity to see this detailed and high-level tutorial for free.

Btw Andrew, have you seen that 2.79 has a "filmic" option in the color management settings? And if yes, is it the same as the filmic blender plugin that you made a video about earlier this year?

you know, using a wacom does make the modeling process faster too and not just texturing or sculpting, at least in maya it is. you should give it a try

If anyone else add the problem of not being able to paint anymore after creating a new brush, even after changing back to original brush (version 3+), I realized that for whatever reason my cloud texture was not linked to the new brush, and basically all brush textures became "black" (just a black square). So when it's black it just doesn't paint at all, even if you inverse color. So for me the easiest was simply to delete my brushes et create new ones, and apply the cloud texture. And it worked. I don't know what I did wrong but if somebody else has that problem, just delete brush and start again...

Well i'm using 2.91.2 and struggled a little bit to find out the texture paint mode. idk if this is your problem, or if it's something beyond, but you can find it in the dropdown for edit/object mode. And in the Image Editor you have to change from View to Paint, right on the left top corner of this window. I know it's been 2 months, but someone might have the same issue too.

do you think it is possible to use some kind of threshold in the bump texture of the chrome part, to make it more like if it has been polished, and not spray painted?

Hey guys! maybe nobody will read this. Worth the try. I tried everything, and I dont know whats happening. When i am painting the texture on the 3d viewport I get the white paint like the tutorial but with tiny black spots but when I use the same paint brush on the image editor the texture brush works fine displaying only the white texture without dots and also adding it fine on the 3d viewport. I just want to know if i may have pressed an option on the 3d viewport, that I can't find or is it a glitch? Thanks. Awesome tutorial, Blender Guru.

Is there a way to use the height info you already have for the texture and use that to inform where the polished/chrome area is apparent - instead of random clouds. Using nodes tex coordinates and the like, I'm like to think you could make the highest points be the ones receiving the polish, this would look much more realistic. Maybe that's not possible or outside the scope of this introduction?

I understand why this tutorial is 22 minutes long and I like that length, but I wish that there was more content per video. I watch a 2X speed and I'm always surprised when the end comes so soon. Don't let that stop you from putting out content though.

Nice tutorial series. One, if not the best tutorial on the matter on youtube. I think you should disable the displacement map on the polish material, it looks to rought. I am not the expert. I just love CG, but my talent for any kind of art is non existent.

The reason the black doesn't show up is there is a lot more variation in lighter colors in computers than darker ones because of the way color is stored
