Introducing Gavle, which (eventually) will be a 2 stage hybrid control point/ payload map set in the Swedish city of Gavle.
This series will follow the progress of this tf2 map, ideally from A1 to RC1 and possibly beyond! We've got big ambitions for this project, and being one of my first fresh layouts in WAY too long, I'm very hyped for it.
This is one of likely TOO MANY new projects I'm starting, so keep an eye out for more!

Dear Swedes: I promise to continue to work on the pronunciation of Gavle, I think I'm close, but I am very American and it is hard for my midwestern accent. I did a bunch of research before hand to try to get it right, haha. Tips on it are appreciated!

My biggest tip would be that the "ä" in Gävle is a completely separate letter from "a", that even has its own place near the end of the Swedish alphabet, after z and å, and before ö. Realizing that might help you disassociate it from how an "a" would normally be pronounced there. The pronunciation of "ä" is more like the a in "air", "cat", "tab", etc. The pronunciation of the G is pretty much correct though. The only other difference besides the "ä" is that the "e" sound at the end should be a bit shorter (in other words, try to cut off the "eyy" sound at the end so it becomes just "e"). With those two changes it should be pretty much spot on! Love the map concept btw :)

as far as i can tell just speaking to myself in an american accent, "yeah-vleh" (vleh like bleh) should be a good start. the sounds are slightly off but maybe you can polish that out by listening to a bunch of natives say it.

This map layout gives a real old school TF2 vibe in a good way. Chokes at objectives with open areas in between and flanks to avoid the chokes, lots of height variation and underground segments, etc. Great stuff Crash

It's been 8 years. But no matter how much he improves, no matter how much great community content he makes or how much of it gets accepted for the real game, to me he will always be "the Trainsawlaser guy".

I always love to hear and learn about hammer jank and map making stuff, It's nerd crack that fuels my brain. I try to use the info to make a map myself, but usually I get bored with if and do something else. These videos often kick-start me back into that horrid pit called hammer. Thanks for nerd crack Crash!

Fun to see a map thats essentially two gamemodes in one, taking place in my country too. I always wanted to make a sd map based on Örebro but this works well too. The layout reminds me a bit of dustbowl. If the project never gets finished just say that the dev textures are snow and im sure valve wont notice. 😉 Also its a tradition that the city builds a giant goat out of wheat, that people ignite every year despite it being illegal to the point that it has now been adopted as a informal tradition. During the 53 years its been built it has only remained intact 16 times. So it would be a funny reference if the payload cart would blow it up if blue team wins since RED arent strangers to build with natural materials like wheat. I can already imagen the blue pyro being tempted and seeing the goat as a candy-floss pony in pyrovision. (EDIT AFTER SEEING VIDEO): Nice you were already ahead of me.

Haha, unreal seeing the town I drive through every time I travel between university and my family represented in TF2. I have the utmost faith in you! And the pronunciation is tough for sure. It's basically just "Yeah-vleh".

Yo!!! We may not talk, but it genuinely makes me so happy to see that you're still at it after all of this time. I first found out about you many, many years ago when I was sorting through TF2 Twitch streams to find something to watch. I clicked on your stream, heard heavy metal, and began chatting about the music. I think one of the first things we talked about was Animals As Leaders, which I thought was really cool. (Matt Garstka kicks ass). I eventually added you as a friend and, to my surprise, you accepted my request. Fast forward to well over five years later - I launched TF2 for the first time in ages only to be greeted with "UEAKCrash is online". I couldn't believe it. What a cool guy. Anyways, keep doing what you do Crash, I truly appreciate all of the amazing things you've contributed to my favorite game over the years.

Definitely going to join to help test if it means finding a server with your old joke maps on the rotation. An alternate suggestion for the payload cart being the goat on a cart being pushed into a bonfire.

When it comes to theming, I would love to see this map go for a 2fort/farm aesthetic. I think it that or a mountainlab esc theme would work great

Suggestion for the cart, possibly has a bunch of those Christmas Wreaths that have the candles on them, or something pyro related given the Balloonicorn would look rather similar to the goat being burnt, Maybe Pyro sees the goat as evil and the Balloonicorn will save us all, just throwing some ideas into the ring

I think that if Blu loses during stage 2, the cart should extinguish so that the timer feels like how long the fire’ll last

I feel like Red's spawn should be to the left of 10:09 and another entrance where you point to at 13:38 (maybe tucked around a corner). That way there's an easier rush for red to defend B similar to stage 3 Dustbowl last.

No joke the first point reversed for the the offense and defence would be soo good! Specially if you have the control point take a bit long to capture. Because of how many routes lead up to the control point retaking would be fun! And the shack would be a amazing place to fight in specially with the super choky door basically THE place to uber into once you got hold and wanna *Really* push the defenders out. On the next video perhaps you can talk about how you think each class will play! Very interested in what map maker has to say about it

having not played on the map and only watching the video, the reason it's so hard for red to retake the first point is because all of blu's routes converge right on the point. combine that with the fact that the point also sits right on the main path, so everyone on blu is subtly guided to sit on the point. red also has a height disadvantage when approaching the point which makes them more susceptible to spam. I don't think having one-way flanking route for red will help. there's probably a better solution but idk.

Hey, you probably don't take suggestions or ideas from the comments but it would be really cool if the water to remove fall damage had a slightly deeper section, at least deep enough to be fully submerged. Not enough maps have water deep enough for Neon Annihilator interactions, or to get rid of debuffs like jarate and afterburn and it would be cool to see another official map added eventually with a spot that could be used. Regardless, the map layout looks pretty great so far, hope it comes together by next year!

9:00 I'd rather not put a RED exit there because then RED could get behind BLU for free, which would be quite annoying. I suggest giving RED a room next to the BLU's room at 7:22.

@@UEAKCrash Lolzers. Another idea for encouraging the sewer would be to have small secondary entrances along the the standard route to first, could be fun for players to slip in and out, but that might go against balance. I'd suggest an entrance in that little room right out of blu spawn.

Honestly I just make stuff I think is cool and let them sort something like that out if it comes down to it. Maybe it'll end up a negative, I certainly wouldn't be stoked to get another map buried in the misc category, but I don't map assuming anything is going to get in.

@UEAKCrash true, I personally love the idea of a hybrid for the map. Just wish they implement a vscript category above the misc one 🤣 or could you just list it as payload (or control points) and see if it gets added to that category

I've always been curious and I guess now is time to ask: Wouldn't it make testing easier to design the stages in reverse order? That way instead of testing each stage individually you can release the full thing and always get the most playtime on the most recent stage created.

I like the idea you describe for this map and cant wait to see how it looks in the end. also, and you dont need to listen to my opinion here since Im not a map maker, but if possible can you avoid putting props/collision on walls? Ive always hated when I'm sticking to a wall and my movement got stopped by something very minimal/non-existent (dont know what to call those things but maybe someone can give a few examples below)

Not swedish but if you wanna just give a tiny bit of effort it clearly doesn't end with "ey" it ends with "eh". So say "gav-leh". Not hard, I think.

Are you able to use a command like 'mp_tournament'* when loading into a map through Hammer? If so, might be an idea to put that into the console so you don't have to worry about the map timer while showing things off while in game. *Full command would be: mp_tournament 1

I could, for sure. I usually leave things pretty stock settings-wise so I'm not missing timers being set wrong when I'm running around myself. Honestly I didn't plan to run around at all in this video but did so on a whim so I wasn't prepped for it, haha

Slight criticism of the video itself The tf2 audio is pretty loud (not unusual for tf2) compared to your voice

Yeah that'll be improved in the next video, I just got a new mic and my levels were a little off, didn't realize it until I recorded the entire thing onto one track 💀

I quit my job of 14 years a year ago after it turned into a corporate hellhole and have been a stay at home Dad with side-hustle money coming in. Between TF2 and other avenues I've made it work and have more time for creative work! Also, I don't sleep enough.

11:46 Wait, you're still getting Steam notifications about TF2Maps test events? I stopped getting those after the big UI update (to Steam beta client) and the only people who bothered to respond to me said it had happened to them too. Is there something new I need to sign up for to get them back?

Nope, just joining it once lets you get notifications, it's some weird feature they added with the UI update, trying to lean it more towards discord style

@@UEAKCrash And by "join" you mean just open the window and then close it again? Funnily enough I could only get the "Open chat room" button to work in Firefox; the one in the Steam client is broken. (Valve please fix)

Make them with mediocre flow and then fix it as the issues come up. I've been meaning to drop a map flow theory video at some point, I've got some *opinions* on it.
