Did you know about this version of Dustbowl?
Overshadowed by the release of Team Fortress 2, this map didn't receive as much love as the other versions of Dustbowl. Team Fortress Classic's version is known for being the first, followed by Pre-Fortress 2's beta-build, and ending with TF2's version we all know today.
Dustbowl Valley was released with Fortress Forever, a Half-Life 2 mod run on the GoldSrc engine. You can find it on the Steam store here: store.steampowered.com/app/25...

Fortress Forever is such a good but forgotten mod of Team Fortress that it makes me wonder what could have happened if only they had released it a few years earlier or few year later rather than on the same year as TF2. I wish it had more visibility.

Nothing. Tfc is a competitive community that it's still played. But the conpetitive game mode is capture the flag and it plays with medics and scouts flying with conc grenades while an engineer, heavy, soldier and demo protect the flag.

I get the feeling this map was made by multiple people because the interior mines and caves are WAY more detailed than the rest of the map. Whoever was responsible for those has some damn good brushwork skills.

TF2 attempts to get the best of both worlds between the more traditional layout seen in games like CS, and the hardcore shooters like Quake. It has both well defined vertical architecture, with the theme and proportionality seen in the maps shown here.

I remember when Fortress Forever was active during 2012-2014 and then got officially added on Steam in 2015 and still had a lot of players. Nowadays, you have to group up to fill up the empty servers. Such a shame.

Glad someone else finally remembered Fortress Forever. That mod was fun back in the day, and its maps had some great art direction, if sometimes questionable functionality. Maps like these feel like a "what if" of TF2. I should also point out about that flank at 3:54 most of the classes in Fortress Forever are vertical mobility classes, grenade jumping is something the mod was designed around, concussion grenades in particular.

Me too, but without knowing any specific development dates, it's possible that they started working on Dustbowl before they even saw or knew about Dustbowl Valley.

the map is surreal in the sense it's fit tf2 even if it the HL2 art style. and how oddly open it feel. the tf2 version do feel like multiplayer map with invisible walls. not this one.

FF is basically a source engine remake of TFC, made by people who were dissatisfied with TF2's art direction and had their own vision for what the game could be turned into, unless I'm mistaken. It's pretty interesting to look at.

Technically it wasn’t about the art style, because nobody saw TF2’s cartoon style until right before its release (coincidentally a week after FF was finally released haha). FF was mainly made as a community-made “true” successor to QWTF and TFC as the last anyone heard of TF2 for years was the realistic Brotherhood of Arms stuff, so we wanted to make something more like classic TF. Hey maybe Valve saw us going the Half-Life “realistic” style and made TF2 look different than FF, like maybe FF is one of the reasons why TF2 got its different art style, hey you never know haha

It would be a good CP map i think (yes i prefer CP Dustbowl over CF). But now i want to know why physic props in Half-Life 2, CSS and TF2 feels and maybe works so much different.

Same here. When I ported TFC over to TF2, I replaced the old CTF-type gamemode with TF2's A/D. That's probably what I'd do here as well.

Hold up... who made this map? A saloon is another name for a bar but you said "salon" as in beauty parlor. But it does say "& bath house" on the sign so maybe the creator was confused? But the setting suggests saloon and why would a bath house exist in this setting... someone goofed.
