Indoctrination is essential to the survival of the North Korean regime. North Koreans are brainwashed into the cult of the Kim family from an early age. In this eighth episode of Special Peninsula 24, we are joined by Thae Yong-ho, North Korea's former deputy ambassador to the U.K., to discuss the regime's use of education as a propaganda tool and reveal some unknown facts about its education, including a private education boom. Thae also shares his childhood dream and rare education opportunities he had as one of the privileged elite.

I have always felt very proud of this man. He came here to London, not far from me, to the embassy and then defected and got his wife and his sons out. He also has good English so makes him a very useful person for the English speaking world to hear and he is mature and sensible so has wise views on it all. It was interesting that his sons went to good English schools when over here. Good luck to them all.

Probably because Kim Jong il kidnapped people from other countries and force them to teach their languages which is bonkers I'm guessing that's why his English is so good as a official he was taught English I think other people with government jobs aren't taught English cause all defectors had to learn English that weren't in a government job.

I was born '81 in communist Bulgaria. As much as everything is much more severe in North Korea, I remember very well how I was brain washed as a child. This I'll never forget, this is the biggest crime of the communists.

@@hongpam8739no, it's very different; communist Bulgaria has nothing to do with North Korea. There are many many differences. To start with the fact that we had some access to western music, movies and books, some illegal, but possible to be found. Besides worlds classics literature was never forbidden. On the opposite - people used to read a lot and education was on a high level - unlike the literature and education in NK where all the books are by Kim I or Kim II. There were many French and Italian movies shown on TV. Some methods of brainwashing are similar, but believe me communism in Bulgaria has little to do with the NK. Especially during the 80s. It was better compared to Romania as well. The only place which was more free was probably Jugoslavia. I deeply hate this regime everywhere, but I am honest about the reality.

Thanks for the info. I always thought communism was a lovely idea. The problem is it doesn't correlate with human nature.

@@rad_y6315 similar to China puppet regime many Chinese get online and troll spewing stupidity even though they're more free then NK could ever be but they're not free in the sense because they can't complain about the regime they crack down on dissent they spy on their own people if they're caught jay walking they're shamed publicly and get less, America is going this way too they crack down on dissent here police killing people also they use DNA Ancestry test to steal people DNA and test it for all crimes even if the person never committed a crime they don't care which isn't even legal your DNA is taken by the police department if you commit a felony so now we're going to biological surveillance of family members it's totally fucked up police too stupid to do their jobs right if it we keep going down this path with racism and death we'll be more like North Korea.

Another interesting insight and Mr Thae’s position as a diplomat before, covers various topics from an objective viewpoint and we, the outsiders have a better understanding of the N.K. system and people in different layers from education, economy, class system to pop culture.

This seems like Thae Young-ho has open his mind to a new world since he betrayed the North Korea and revealing new information his half-mother country that has never been shown throughout the history. Thanks to his betrayal it seems that the Kim regime will soon downfall and hoping for the reunification of the separated Koreas.

It's only considered a betrayal to the remaining members of the cult. Make no mistake that the NK regime is structured like a cult either.

Thae seems like a good guy tbh never heard anything bad about him, and ever since his appearance on the media, he seems relatively genuine and moral, if that makes sense. I can’t see this guy killing people, or knowingly doing wrong by somebody. I understand North Korea is a whole different world, but I mean, I think he’s a good man despite what he’s been through, and had to do to protect his life and more so his families life. That really changes perspective, killing me is one thing, but my wife, kids, parents, so on, I can’t knowingly allow that. I ache for North Korean citizens who just want to be free and prosperous.

The pronunciation Mr. Thae spoke out is easier to understand than girl from arirang.I live in LA now. Most of people here speak bad pronunciation, I think, for me to understand.
