The history of Rome is like a party. 1. Monarchy and the beginning of the Republic - brainstorming various ideas on how to plan a party. 2. Julius Caesar and Augustus - the start of the party when everyone arrives in their best attire, smiling and happy. 3. The Five Good Emperors - the peak of the party. The right moment to leave the party, taking the best moments with you and avoiding any incidents or problems. Knowing when to leave is key. 4. From the Dominate to the fall of the West - a few drunken guests, some even intoxicated with other substances, and many peculiar characters - outsiders, but very interesting if you take the time to talk to them. 5. Byzantine period - 3/4 days of hangover after the party that you could have avoided if you had left the party on time and refrained from taking certain substances.

Sebastian! Congratulations to a most deserving channel founder, video producer and KZfaq creator. "Maiorianus" is one of a hundred or so channels I watch casually, but only one of three which I respect academically, admire ethically and support financially. You deserve this milestone, and don't be embarrassing about "Gladiator!" It was a truly compelling movie, with a soul-wrenching story and music guaranteed to fill a Roman Aqueduct with Romanophile tears.

If you're still interested in Roman fiction.. Adrian Goldsworthy is a Roman historian who wrote the Vindolanda series. 3 books about a Roman centurion stationed near the Hadrian wall. You'll learn a lot of little details of life back then, and the story is exciting!

Congratulations! Your videos are super enjoyable, and as you say, this is a very interesting period of Roman history that is criminally underappreciated. We are talking about some 250 years from the beginning of the Crisis of the third century to the fall of Romulus Augustulus. Thats nearly as much time as the early days of Augustus to the fall of the Nerva-Antonines, thats a LONG time. I'll be congratulating you again when you reach 1 Million, which will not take that long, considering how good your content is! :)

The east was Roman in name only. The language was greek, the culture greek and christian. Even during the Roman empire the east was never Romanized like the west was. Greek culture remained dominant in every way. No Latin, no Roman gods, no senate, no anything Roman apart from a name
@aum1083
@aum1083 6 ай бұрын
@@celsus7979 I guess this dispute is worthwhile a video... As far as know, Justinian (527-565) was possibly the last Roman emperor to speak Latin as a first language (see Wikipedia). I have coins of that period in Latin (not Greek). But yes, Greek was dominant in the East. Under the rule of Emperor Heraclius in 610, Greek became the official language of the Eastern Roman Empire. Still, the inhabitants considered themself as Romaioi, and the last Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine XI (1449-1453) was named after the Roman Emperor Constantine I (306-337). So it was a Roman Empire up to the end. And I hope there will be also videos of the later periods one day!

I was always curious because history is taught so categorized, as in 476 Rome fell to homeless barbarians and the next day everything was knights, kings, peasants and castles. I watched the movie King Arthur when it came out and wondered why the soldiers looked the same as in movies set 300 Years earlier. Despite this oversight, the movie served in peaking my interest in the details of that time period, of making me seek answers to other curiosities around that time period. Im so grateful for finding this channel. It was like "you're not the only one, here is everything you ever wanted to know and much much more". Keep up the good work Sebastián, I'm elated to see it paying off for you, you deserve it!

I became fascinated with the Roman Empire from the times my dad took me and my brothers to visit Hadrian's Wall. I am interested in the end of things - I remember years ago bingeing on Wikipedia reading how various empires collapsed. I think what I get most out of your channel was how close to the end the Western Roman Empire almost bounced back. If I can make a request - Can you please make a video on the bagaudae / bacaudae? Maybe video on the late 'Roman' Scotland and the confusing situation of a potential Scottish province of Valentia late into the empire? Or the Notitia Dignitatum?

Yours is one of my top three favourite Ancient History channels, and I really appreciate the focus on much-neglected late Roman history - you've really opened my eyes to how different it was to earlier Roman eras. I don't mind the occasional use of AI images to illustrate your points as long as it doesn't become excessive and they stay within the bounds of historical accuracy - I just wish that these images weren't always of such unfeasibly attractive people but I guess that's just how AI works...

I think a video on the kingdom of Odacar and the Gothic kingdom of Italy both of which were nominally federated with the Eastern Roman Empire... and then the reconquest of italy by the Romans during the Gothic wars of the 530s would be a great segway for the second fall of the Western Empire with the Lombard invasion...?

Just wanted to say that i was one of your first subscribers back when you were at 20k and even though i rarely subscribe to stuff, I was amazed at your attention to detail in your documentaries and despite what you said about not being a historian by trade you sure done a lot better work in helping someone really understand the period better than any other documentary out there. The one thing I would like for you to change in your channel if you can, is to make all your videos differently. Don't put ads mid video only at the start or at the end of a video. Otherwise its very disorientating especially on some where you go into deep and complicated stuff. Thanks for teaching me so much stuff about the period.

Congratulations and much deserved! Your content is always informative and enjoyable. And no shame in Gladiator sparking your interest. That's what historical entertainment should be about. It should be compelling, interesting and invite you to dig deeper. On the same note, they were going to launch the Juno probe to Jupiter without a standard camera. There wasn't any scientific value to be gained. It was all about conducting precise research with instruments and payload space is at a premium, but some folks fought, with good cause, to get a camera on the probe. Even though it may not contribute much to the science directly, it sparks the interest and fascinates the public that we count on to fund this research, and to inspire another generation to get involved with the space program. So I'm a fan of any entertainment that inspires people to seek and learn and I'm thankful for the movie Gladiator, if for no other reason than it brought you here with us today. Cheers mate!

Sebastian, many, many thanks for your ongoing enterprise. There is no doubt that the late Roman period is worth investigating, at least from the standpoint of political sciences as proof and description as to how great powers cease to exist. This fascinating process, with all its lessons for current and future political ways of efficient and honest governance, is definitely worth learning from.
