I greatly enjoy the way you explain to your listeners, start to finish. Also, there is so many DIY's that the only way they seem to want something is to get it new instead of bringing something back to life. Keep them coming, I'm hooked on your videos. Thanks

Great video Michael. I bet you had a wet spot in your shorts when that thing popped off!!!! Absolutely superb. Like when you adjusted the valves with the engine NOT running, you can get a dead on perfect ignition timing by hooking up a DVOM or a simple test lamp into the wire from the dist to the coil. After setting the point gap, turn the crank to 6 deg before TDC with #1 on compression stroke. then simply turn the dist housing till the instant the light turns off, and lock it down. Ignition timing will be spot on. Oh, of course reconnect the wire to the coil. This is going to be a great series!!!!

as far as a power valve tool just take a cut off wheel to a sacrificial screwdriver. several small engine manufactures recommended simple green in the ultrasonics. as a hint put your small parts in a ziplock baggie filled with cleaning solution. squeeze the air out and seal it toss the bag with the parts in the cleaner. it works great.

Michael, the orange wire to the oil pressure sensor on the driver’s side of the engine, where does it go? Mine is missing this connection. Also could you please send me the scan of the engine specs you have? Your video is so helpful!!

gday mate thats a winner , i laughed when it fired up i dont think anyone watching would have thought it would fire that quick . who would take a welsh plug out and just leave it without replacing it also just wondering if the bolt had a sensor for manifold heat on it to let you know if it was not getting water cooling to it , anyway that damb thing starts better than my car excellent video and seeing you have some good luck with this engine .

Michael- this is so helpful!!! These engines are so rare now there’s few people talking about them. I’m working on the exact same 165. It’s running good at idle but at higher RPM it has a ‘miss’. Would this be timing? How to check and adjust timing? I’m also having a hard time getting my oil pressure gauge to work. Got a new sensor but the wires don’t seem to be hooked up correctly. New fuel pump like yours has an extra brass port out the bottom what is this for?

Glad it was helpful! I think it is for a drain in case the fuel pump diaphram blows out, thanks for watching

That intake/exhaust manifold is very problematic for cracking and letting water into the engine. A stuck open, removed or malfunctioning thermostat is thought to be one of the problems. The fact that it has survived this long is amazing. If that casting breaks there’s no repair it because it simply won’t last. If you can find a replacement, it’ll make a small block Chevy look like the better option. The engine is great but the merCruiser manifold sucks.

Aaaaah. The check ball. I’m rebuilding the same carb and my ball was stuck as well. I ultimately had to drill a tiny hole behind the ball and used a dental pick to force it out. Tiny whole filled with airline epoxy. Hope it works.

Ooops, I forgot one quick question. The new silver fuel pump you just installed on the 165 has what looks like a metal "bail" on top, as though its holding a fuel filter in a can to the top of the pump. Is that right?

You can put real small parts in a small tupperware w/ solution in it then put that container in the US cleaner. Works great & you don't have to slosh around in the big tub for small stuff.
