Even if the dealer knew it was likely a head gasket, that alone would cost more to fix there than that motor is worth. The hourly rates around here range anywhere from $145 to $250/hr. Most won't work on old motors, in fact, most won't work on anything older than about 10 or so years these days. A buddy took his 2003 four stroke in because it wouldn't start in the spring, He wanted an oil change, and the carb gone through. He was told they don't rebuild carbs, they replace them and since it was 20 year old, there's no parts available for it. Yet they charged him $147.50 plus tax for an oil change and gave it back to him still not running. He was pissed off about that and dumped the motor off here and told me to keep it or scrap it, he'll never buy another Mercury. He went out and spent nearly $8k on a new Yamaha. I cleaned out the carb and its a good running motor but its proven to be nearly unsellable here. Its in near new condition, has had minimal use, maybe one or two days on the river at best considering the original owner was in his 80's. Plus its a fresh water run motor. If it werent' a year older than my own motor, I'd likely keep it but it seems a 2003 15hp tiller motor has almost no value here. I listed it at $800, and got nothing but complaints, and $100 offers. Old two strokes get zero attention. They're $200 motors at best lately. I run an '82 35hp on my one aluminum boat, a rope start remote steer motor that came with it on which I added a charging system and starter with a simple push button and key on the dash. Its been a great motor which never gave me any issues other than its a bear to pull start due to the compression. I just picked up 5 more same era 35hp motors off CL in PA, they were listed all winter for cheap with no takers so having to drive half way there for something else, I added two hours to the trip and picked them all up for one price, roughly $50 each. The lot consists of one stuck 1982 Long shaft remote 35hp Johnson, but it looks like a new motor otherwise, one 1981 35hp Johnson, also a remote long shaft that runs but needs a w/p and carb from sitting, a minty clean 85 Evinrude 30hp that runs as is but will be getting a new impeller and likely a carb cleaning, a 1980 Johnson 35hp short shaft, rope start that runs sometimes, and sometimes not, it looses spark at random. Its a clean looking motor that the guy said he bought new and had been chasing the issue since day one but its gotten the point where it won't start more than it will. Its gonna get the electronics off the stuck motor and become the new motor for my 14ft Starcraft. The last motor is a 1979 Johnson 35hp, remote long shaft with what looks like a new prop, lower unit housing, and new carb. Its got a dealer hang tag still on it from 1984 saying it was a trade in at a dealer in Indianna. I didn't get around to starting that one since its been winterized or pickled with some heavy oil or something. Its dusty but will clean up nicely. I listed the last motor on FB and CL here and got zero interest, not so much as a low ball offer all spring. Not that I'm really that concerned about selling it since I run those motors but to test the market a bit. What I find is that if its not a near new 4 stroke, 9.9hp electric start tiller for under $500 no one wants it. If you ask $800, you get $200 offers, if you ask $600, you get $50 offers, if you ask $1,000 or more, you get no replies.

I got a 1976 110 9.8 hp Merc for free on New Orleans Free Stuff Craigslist. I got spark on both plugs. A few months later I decided to work on it and only got spark from one plug. Found out that the plug wire had come loose inside the coil. Pushed the wire up tight into the coil and got fire. I got no gas to the carb and saw that someone routed the gas line around the front of the motor instead of over the top which caused it to kink and harden as it was bent too much where it went into the carb fuel pump inlet. Now it runs but I think I need to rebuild the carb fuel pump as it does not want to keep a prime enough to run it for more than about 10 minutes and the carb flooded over a couple times when messing with it. There was a lot of oil discharge into the barrel of water from the exhaust. I had changed the whole water pump assembly with new driveshaft gasket. I figure this oil may be coming from when I stored the motor up for a year with it laying on its side. I haven't changed the shift shaft seal and O ring. Guess I have to unscrew the retainer bolt and hold the shaft down like the video says while prying it up and then slipping it over the top of the shaft. Does that sound about right?

Just watched you put the screws back in this carb bowl. Just a suggestion. Use a little blue Locktite. I didn't when I rebuilt the carb on my Johnson 35 and the vibration from running worked the screws loose and the bowl almost fell off the carb and I had to get towed back to the dock. Not fun!

1977 was the 1st model that had "CD MAGFLASH" ignition. I owned the exact same motor in the late 70s. Thrashed the life out of it, but it kept running like a dream. They were virtually bulletproof. ❤ now I own a 1978 johnson stinger 75hp. It is mint. Nice video. Best wishes from Brisbane Queensland Australia 🇦🇺

Skip all the steps previous and do the harmonic balancer bolt first to avoid having to put everything back together to get the tool that’s going to break that bolt loose like it happened to me, believe me this bolt is there seize, and you probably have to go to the hardware store more than once to try tools because the torque power needed is in the high level.

Did not see much if any penetration into the base metal. Must have penetration. Building up all that rod really served no purpose. It is what welders call a Bondo job. Without welding the under aide also, (with proper penetration into the base metel) this job will most likely peel off and possably damage your proyp. Not trying g to be critical, just sharing.
