25 years on from the 1995 Lansdowne Road riot during a football match between Ireland and England, former FAI CEO and then-head of security Bernard O'Byrne joins Off The Ball to recall his memories of that dark night.

I was selling programs at that game. I remember going to the toilets up there (our program box was under the west stand) and feeling very afraid. We sat on the pitch in front of the east stand so we seen the entire scene play out. We legged it out of the ground all the way to Connolly station then the train home.

I couldn’t watch to the end of the video. I feel just so sad and angry four the F a I and Bernard and everyone who tried to stop it. Was the game abandoned?

Of course it was, it was a disgrace, every time there's a minority of English fan's that cause trouble, at least us Irish fan's win lose or draw we have a laugh & enjoy.

@@paulfagan5303 you are right, as an English fan it shames me to say that there is a minority of dickheads who are attracted to England football matches.

yes it was sue. My dad and i were both there that night and we saw it unfold in real time. It looked like they were confetti or something at first. Little did we realise what was unfolding but yes it was abandoned after about half an hour. I've always maintained that those troublemakers were lucky to get out of there alive that night. Had the Irish fans gotten involved it would have been a bloodbath. There was also trouble at the ferry terminal and one person was apparently stabbed in dublin city centre that night. The whole thing was an absolutel disgrace.

At that time there was no riot squad, now I've no idea,it was regular guards that were sent in that night.i left the west stand and walked into the city with someone, and then proceeded to find my bus home,it was disgraceful, a different time ,may we never see that in ireland again.

This is so sad to hear. The English FA have messed up well and truly yet again. The Hillsborough disaster and now this about five years later. The chair of the English FA who was in power at the time should be prosecuted for both of these incidences.

great idea to put the English fans in the upper stands so they could cause maximum damage on the Irish fans below

Let's be honest, it was a mistake to treat them like normal humans.

Gardai top brass fully at fault, there was numerous incidents on the way into the ground that night.English skinheads getting dragged away by gaurds into paddy wagons before kick off. Riot squad should have been deployed earlier.
