Why did we ever stray from making games that were just fun to play? This game was amazing on the PS2! So much fun just dicking around with the chain throwing, dismembering, bloodsucking, huge friggin' arm sword things.. what's not to like?

I unironically love this game. Its a vast improvement over the first game which had its own charm, but was quite janky in places. I also think its worth noting that for 2005 the in-engine cut scenes look pretty good, and the cg cut scenes are actually really nice.

Funny thing I bought these 2 at halloween just because Laura Bailey was the main characters voice and then they announce the terminal cuts. I like them just because of the 2000's energy.

Every time someone says 3 BloodRayne movies, I am instantly reminded of Blubberella. That scene-for-scene spoof (quotation fingers) of BloodRayne: The Third Reich.....and then i say "does that kinda make it 4?"

I actually really liked these games when they came out (I was 14 btw) but its always bummed me out that the movies killed the series so hard that the games never got the chance to continue.

4:21 that is an effect where they mirror the geometry of the level underneath the floor. It is then coded so that it can be seen from above the floor. This was very cheap on CPU usage and was used in the PS2 and Xbox copies as well, especially known in Metal Gear Solid 2 for it's rainy reflections. The people and objects you see are a texture to rendering method in software similar to full-screen-reflections, but also much cheaper on CPU usage.

The chain mechanic is prretty awesome. Playing around with ragdolls is always amusing.

I actually missed out on the original releases, didn’t play them until my first year of college a while back. I didn’t even know about these remasters until they showed up in my GOG account. I liked the original versions so much, that I dropped my Diablo III playthrough to play the remasters. Thank god for controller optimization, these games are meant to be played with them. Earlier this month, I played BloodRayne 1 and 2 on steam, at 8:44 I am very happy that throwing harpooned enemies towards the rhinos actually makes them land on the horns. I also remember incredibly slow rail-grinding.

That's not Ray Tracing, even the old Xbox version has the same reflections, its probably just the same rooms rendered twice and flipped upside down to fake reflections, the floors are transparent. Silent Hill 2 and 3 did the same trick for mirrors.

the technical term for the reflections is planar reflections it's like other people suggested it's literally just the scene rendered again and then put underneath the environment with a transparency it's just a more difficult and expensive method to use which is why we use screen space nowadays

Reflections can be Ray-traced: yes.____________ are these, probably not reflections have been in video games for a Long, Long, Lonnnnnnnnnng, time. most of the times it was done with tricks a prebaked frame that moved at the same rate as the player camera (similar to Parallax scroll), but the most notable that has been in games more recently (and probably what is used here) is a separate camera coming out of the surface pointing at the things to be reflected then just mapped to the surface for display. Ray tracing can be used for reflections for say mirrors, but that is actually the most basic form of ray tracing, and is very limited in impact, but where Ray-Tracing has the greatest impact is Ray-tracing for shadows (turn on a flash light in a dark room, and look at the corner opposite the flashlight direction that in games would require Ray-Tracing)

Been a long time I've played this game, I think I got my copy at Blockbuster when they're selling those new or use copy games. And I don't think that's Ray tracing, even tho Ray tracing is just a name, that sounds like a gimmick now. when it's just a "more advance realistic and details of lights, shadows, colors and reflections engine" That are almost good as those 2005 to 2010 CGI animated films like graphics.

I'm saying this as a longtime fan of the games and it's one of the few things the Uvve Boll movies gets right is that Rayne was the byproduct of being Half-vampire/human through Rape. Thereby making her a Dhampir. As disturbing as that sounds, it's official canon, much in the same way Blade's mother was attacked while pregnant. But unlike Blade, Rayne has actual weaknesses such as Water being one of them for some reason. (It's not like the water has to be blessed so that never made sense to me.)

idk if the ray trace question was serious or not or if it was already answered, but for those who don't know, often times in older games one method to achieve reflections was to have another set of models that are "flipped" and the floor is made transparent. This is a computationally cheaper way of getting reflections but still comes at a price. You have to have double the models for everything (or, pick and choose what is reflected and also use lower detail models in the reflected world) which means that you're drawing double the polygons per frame. So, in scenes where there are reflections done in this manner, it's often confined to simpler indoor scenes. The other downside of this method is it can only do perfect reflections- ray traced reflections are *much, much* more computationally expensive but can achieve much greater levels of realism (blurry reflections for example). At the time this was made, it was widely believed that ray tracing in real-time was simply impossible. It wasn't until recent advances in machine learning and very clever optimizations in ray tracing, combined with increasingly powerful consumer hardware (such as the RTX/GTX/whatever else cards that are designed to handle real-time ray tracing) that ray tracing in games/real-time become viable for people without access to 10/100s of thousands of dollars worth of expensive hardware.
