Out in Manchester for a day of Street Photography with a slightly unconventional lens choice of 70-200mm. Also in this video, we're chatting about Street Photography with ‪@AndrewHamiltonPhotography‬ addressing some of the gatekeepers who declare 'that's NOT street photography!'
My shadow & light Manchester street photography workshop is available NOW: letsclickphotography.co.uk/gr...
and you can see more of Andrew's street photography in Manchester on this video here: • City Street Photograph...

Fab video mate! I'm not sure how it warms my heart so much to see two people I've never proper met get together, but it did! Watched this one like a proud papa! Great to hear both of your thoughts on what street photography means and I think you both nailed it. I think the value of a street/urban photo grows over time. Take a photo of a McDonald's restaurant today and it means absolutely nothing, but in 50 years it has a lot of value, same with a random woman crossing the street. Her clothing and hair style becomes the value. Great shots in this one pal and always love the look around,.such a photographable city Manchester is. Chat soon mate.

haha Papa Paul!! Your name came up in conversation a few times mate - all good of course....it was like you were there in spirit - I think you'd had a chat with Andrew the day (or certainly last couple of days) before. We had a much more longer chat than I've shown here but I may well publish that as part of the podcast I was chatting to you about later this year. You're spot on with the value proposition which increases over the years. I wonder if everyone will still be glued to their phones in 50 odd years time.....perhaps we'll all just live virtually - WALL-E style!! Have a good weekend mate and catch up soon

Nice vlog Dave! Really loved the shots you got, especially those panning ones and when you were shooting through a fence or something. Good to catch up with a fellow photographer as well:) Have a great weekend mate!

Thanks Peter, I think I'll be doing a vid soon where I'm just concentrating on that kind of style a bit more. This trip was def more about having a good chat with a fellow photographer - always good. Have a great weekend mate :)

Nice to see you out with Andrew , hope he has a vlog coming out soon, Street photography is something i have never tried before , i did like some of the images especially the image at 6:28 of a single person walking through the scene with the cobbled floor as a background and the harsh shadow , simple but effective image , liked that! Hope your well, take care mate !

Cheers Lee. TBH that's my kind of street photography, the type I prefer anyway. I'm going to do a dedicated vid about that style pretty soon, but it wasn't the type of day for doing much of it this time. Andrew might pop up with a vid pretty soon from the day but I know he had some audio issues so I think it depends on what he was able to rescue.

Great feel of the video. Nice to see you guys catching up again. Great info during the vide. I think street photography is about everything you can fit into the frame. I do like to us a tele lens when doing street photography.

Hey mate, yeah it was nice to be out and about and having a chat with someone again. Hope you're up for another meet up again in the near future, I'm going to put together something in the PD in the next 6-8 weeks if you're available and fancy a morning shooting

You got some killer street images there Dave. The panning shots were really nice. Throwing out the rule book by using a 'big' lens too but the images speak for themselves. As for what is 'Street Photography' I think it does need some human element in it, whether that is an actual person or how humans have shaped a living space, e.g. vandalism, litter etc. As for the gear you use, that's not important, any with a camera will do. I took some of my favourite street images on a compact camera. I do much prefer to shoot the 'non interference ' style of street. That might be more down to my personality rather than me not wanting to be the next Bruce Gilden!

Thanks mate. I do prefer capturing the more artistic side of street, like the panning or emphasising movement and shadow but wanted to be a little general on this one. I tend to agree with you on the human element, but it's a fairly blurry line between street, urban and architecture that's for sure. Take a shot of the building looking directly up and it can't possibly be 'street'. Take that shot from a few hundred yards away with someone happening to walk past and all of a sudden it is. And architecture could be either version with a slightly different focus. Fine lines!......but some folks get so angry about it in photography groups...so sure of their personal definition they lambast anyone who differs, I always find that astonishing.

Loved the vibe of the video mate…always good to watch others and I’ve never tried using 70-200 for street, so good to watch you in action. Come to think of it, I keep switching between 24,35 and 50 and still can’t decide 😂.

Thanks mate. I've actually been using the 85 a lot recently, but thought I'd take the 70-200 on this trip just for that bit of versatility.....my next trip I might well try shooting everything at 16 and see how that goes....like you I can't nail one that I think 'that's it!'
@AdrianRankin

@@LetsClickPhotography wow 16 would be interesting! I did think about taking 100-400 and doing something crazy as we have some very long straight streets in Melbourne but tbh I was bit self conscious lugging such a large heavy lens around town!

I must admit, it’s not a genre I’m drawn to, but I really enjoyed this vlog nonetheless. Gotta love those geese honking in the back ground 😁.

To be completely honest Martin, me neither. What I do find fascinating about it is the certainty with which some photographers gate-keep the genre, hence the conversation we were having in this one. I'm not going to be veering off into street photography realms too much more (maybe just another one) before heading back to the tranquil of less inhabited areas....less geese noise in the landscape too haha :)

Some thought provoking discussion here Dave and great to see Andrew out and about too. I personally prefer something fairly wide for street, but definitely no rules. You got some great images. How did you make that one at about 5:50?
@LetsClickPhotography

Hey mate, thanks. I gotta admit, I am not a huge fan of most of the shots I've put into this, they wouldn't see the light of day outside of this vid. The day itself was far more about the chat than the shooting, was great to have a good few hours nattering with Andrew. The shot you mention is one of three that I would actually be willing to show off elsewhere. It needs a bit more refinement and time, and is one that I will go back and shoot again. I utilised a coloured plastic piece of street art pressed against the right of the lens. The longer focal length allowed me to magnify the guy who was on the far side of the street....doing this with a wide or more classic SP focal length and the guy in the left of the shot would look really far away. Next time I will line up the road in the reflection and wait until I get a person on both sides of the image, mirroring each other (probably be sat there for hours as it's way off the beaten track!)

@@LetsClickPhotography I think we're all our own biggest critics - nothing wrong with that though - it's the pursuit of perfection I suppose. Definitely going to have to try that trick out, cheers. 👍
