As a Tetris player I have to say that if you leave the spot empty on the side then you have to take time moving the long stick over to the side and by that time you've already died. Especially if you're playing an older version of Tetris so you need to have the hole in the center.

If you can tune DAS and ARR then it's not as bad. A 40L WR can still be made with a 1W well on the side, but of course it's no longer the preferred strat, and in mid-rank multiplayer 1-wide will get you nowhere, you need either ridiculous speed in 3W or 4W, t-spin chains or perfect clear loops which are all the rage these days.

Man, this is making me feel old, and I'm only 19! I used to play this like 10 years ago with my "hoogbegaafdheid" (according to Google translate it's "gifted" or "highly intelligent" in English) teacher, though I played it with a physical card deck. I immediately recognized it in the thumbnail, though I couldn't really place it, until it hit me near the end of the video

I made the mistake of buying one of those NYT Sudoku Plug n’ Plays from some guy named Gil. He recommended the rust protection since supposedly those Colecos rust but I was too cheap and now the humidity has withered away my machine.

Franklin used to be a pretty serious electronics company. I had their handheld dictionaries back in the early 2000s, decent-ish hard double shot key keyboard, very legible dot matrix LCD, top notch reliability and software. Nothing in common with the very Chinese ones or the Ectaco garbage. They probably had one shot at designing the manufacturing tooling for this one so they couldn't iterate and get the feel of the D-pad just right. It's one of those "harder than it seems" sorts of things. Also i don't suspect that that's the path they chose, but it wouldn't be anyhow unreasonable to design such a product around a NOAC chip. But there's literally dozens of other options which wouldn't differ substantially in cost.

I was legitimately expecting either another 9999 games in 1 handheld or one that had a collection of non interesting games. Now I came out discovering a new puzzle game for my repertoire

Same! When I got this I seriously expected the screen to be like a graphing calculator. I suspect a lot of their budget went to just that light up full color LCD screen. So glad they made something like this instead of NYT Tetris port or something

This is a fascinating little device, though for whats on it. $40 is a steep asking price for a game with such a steep learning curve like SET. I thought this thing was gonna be like $20

I believe either the Daily Mail or Daily Express in the UK released a handheld Soduko machine, but it was borderline Tiger LCD technology, no where near as advanced as this. There might have been a handheld crossword machine too. Also, The Sun actually published it's own video game for the Commodore Amiga and PC called Snapperazzi. Heavily sponsored by Dominos Pizza too!

It's weird how Sudoku was HUGE for a few years and now no one really talks about it. This handheld could be seen as the end of the line for the flood of cheap handhelds and plug n' plays before the app stores took off and shut them all out of the market.

The problem I see with this game, that would decrease its value as a smarty pants game, the more you play , the less it becomes about logic and more about pattern recognation

true, and that's true of most games as a whole. They all start to become pattern recognition. GTA becomes less "fun" when you're no longer stealing cars to complete a bank robbery, you're rudely acquiring a vehicle to transport you to the next checkpoint to abscond with tokens to buy more equipment for the next mission.

... for the puzzle at 4:30 there's at least one extra solution, no? Top left, bottom right, bottom left makes for a same color/different shape/different count/different shading combination.
