Oh god, it's look so horrible! From the eternally creepy mocap approaches of Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers studio, comes the epitome of everything that goes wrong with their movies. Aimed towards kids, it has a message build for toddlers, all the while scaring them with visuals that are both uncomfortable and overtly sexual as well. With a plotline that fumbles the whole way through and a villain with no passable dialogue, and you've built the perfect trainwreck. I never saw this movie when it first came out. And now I wish maybe I didn't ever. This is The TERRIBLE Mars Needs Moms...

I noticed how Image Movers Digital is better off when they’re intentionally creepy, like with Monster House or Christmas Carol, than unintentionally creepy.

The reason why gibble is so immature is because he basically raised himself alone on mars after his own mom was kidnapped and he failed to save her. He is not really supposed to be likable he is supposed to be a cautionary tale of what could happen to miles or whatever his name is if he didn't have his mother and you probably would have understood that if the movie communicated its themes properly.

This movie made me cry and hug my mum for like, a good ten minutes when I was a small child. Not the movie, just the scene where Gribble tried to save his mum. We turned it off after that point in the movie and pretended it didn’t exist.

What’s more interesting is WHY this film was made. So the animation studio behind it was hard at work on their ambitious remake of the 1968 animated Beatles film, Yellow Submarine, but movie executives wanted a new movie from the studio NOW. Knowing they needed a lot more time to work on and perfect their new Yellow Submarine film, they turned to Berkeley Breathed’s children’s story, Mars Needs Moms, and just shat out a rushed movie adaptation of it just to pacify the movie execs. However, this was a very poor choice, not only because it does a disservice to the work of Bloom County’s creator and cartoonist, but also because the movie they made based on Berke’s story was so bad, it caused the animation studio to get completely shut down. This, of course, is what led to the cancellation of the Beatles remake they were trying so hard to buy more time for working on in the first place.

Dazzreviews actually covered this a few years back and judging from the more grotesque character redesigns; I don't think the movie would've had enough of an audience to turn a profit either. At least it still would've been more memorable than the thrown together slop that killed their CGI department.

Animation aside, Wouldn’t it have been more points to the parenting of the mom if she was a single parent visibly balancing looking after her kid and jobs and tiny home, and the kid turning out great. Then the lashing out could be understandable when he’s getting frustrated at not having what other kids get easily toy-wise or experience-wise. His mom getting taken by the aliens and seeing her memories would then be a humbling and understanding lesson of how good he has it and how hard his mom tries, and show his mom as a person not just as a guardian. Gribble could have been like the dad/old brother character the boy never had, and he’d been trying and failing for 10 years (not 30 odd) to stop other moms getting disintegrated, and in the end could decide to stay on earth with his new family but take occasional trips to space. I know this is a kids movie but the trauma for the characters ought to be shown. The mom screaming was hilariously close.

I don't think I can ever quite forgive Robert Zemeckis for all the mo-cap. He seems to be more interested in whatever the newest gimmick is than actually making a good movie, and even his better movies like BTTF and Roger Rabbit are like that, but they had good stories and good producers behind them.

I remember watching this movie at around 7 years old and hating it, and I thought nothing of it until I found out it was based off a children’s book by Berkeley Breathed, the author of Bloom County which just so happens to be my favorite comic strip. When I saw this video in my notifications, I was reminded of this fact, and wouldn’t you know! The book has a completely different art direction, courtesy of Breathed’s signature style. It’s still a little ugly, but a whimsical sort of ugly that kids will find interesting, rather than the drab and uncomfortable kind of ugly the movie has, which I found out was mostly for mo-cap reasons. As for Breathed’s opinion on the movie? Apparently he did a Q n’ A about it, but I wasn’t able to find it. What I _was_ able to find was a drawing he made of the fun, kooky aliens from the book staring at a billboard with Key’s hollow face on it.

"fun" fact about gravity: It doesn't matter if the gravity is lower, what kills you isn't the "falling", it's the "stopping". When you're falling, your body accelerates downwards, and, past a certain velocity, your body won't resist the force the ground will exert to you and break apart, crushed by the parts of your body that haven't stopped (or decelerated) and the immobile ground. Lower gravity is "safer" because you take longer to achieve dangerous velocities, but if the air isn't dense enough to resist your acceleration, then you're certain to hurt yourself if you fall from high enough. With denser atmospheres your terminal velocity (the point where drag is equal to gravitational pull, so you can't accelerate anymore) is lower and so is the force you'll receive when hitting the ground, and vice-versa.

I think that Gribble is being misunderstood, he acts the way he does because he was never socialized since he was a kid, so he never learned to not be immature, he acts like a kid because he never learned anything after getting to mars. And yes that makes him kinda stupid, he literally doesn't know anything past like the 5th grade. The reason he is quick to "love" the Martian is because he has the same perseption of love as a teenage boy, his lack if socialization makes that martian the first interaction since the Milo. Gribble doesn't really help Milo in the beginning because he doesn't care, he feels cheated,so why should he help some other kids mom. It's a lack of hope and his grief that makes him not help, but when he has a change of heart realizing that Milo still has a chance, he realizes (mind you he has the mentality of a child) that he can give Milo what he couldn't have, a chance. The males being stupid is because again a lack of socializing, they have been discarded from society being trapped in a trash wasteland. Milo is purposefully unlikable in the beginning to show how his character fully arcs into caring for his mother. The reason his explanation of why his mom is important to the martian is so immature is because the martian needs to be given as simple of an explanation to understand it, because she doesn't understand why the mother is important since she never had one. Alot of stuff her I think was overlooked just because of the animation, which I don't think is that bad, the characters do have depth. The main villain doesn't speak English, so when she says her first line in English, it's broken english, so it makes since.

I remember starting this movie as a kid and being super uncomfortable. I gave up when the kid gave Gribble a purple nurple JFKDLS

Say what you will, and yes this thing is utter crap, but it was the first movie I ever saw in a theater and is weird nostalgia for me. I loved it.

Talking about strange obscure children alien movies, if you get the chance you should review Battle for Terra. I highly doubt anyone remembers that.
