So what was the root of problem? The capacitor and contactor, or the new thermostat. I’m blowing 3A fuse in controller when cooling. No changes in system since new. System around 8-10 years old.

Everytime the thermostat calls for cooling, the 3 amp fuse inside at furnace shorts out. Nothing has been replaced , unit works in heat mode and its only going on 5 yrs old . Any ideas ?

So where did you find the short on the system?

The home owner replaced the thermostat, which caused the short because they didn't turn the power off before hand.

So if you don't shut off the power prior to changing out the thermostat. It starts a short? Does this ruin the thermostat? @@HVACTechTips

@@aaronsanchez4217it's very easy to short the common wire when switching out a thermostat if you leave it on.

The homeowner replaced the thermostat and blew the fuse bc they didn't know to turn off the power to the furnace first. Happens all the time. If you watched until the end, I go over what was replaced.

Most of the time I had a blow fuse call it was due to a pressure switch on the outside unit. Pain in the butt to diagnose

Probably the common wire touched the red wire when he was replacing the thermostat
