In this comprehensive test and review, I'm sharing my experience with the 100Balance BMS. I saw this online and wanted it in my garage for testing. This Daly-style BMS has a 1A active balancer, Bluetooth and Wifi, RS485 and CAN communication for your inverter and it can handle 100A. First thing which came to my mind was: 'Do we have a JK competitor here?' All the specs and features looked good, but once I started testing it, it quickly came clear, that there is only on BMS-King...

You need to fix the balancer shutting off at 3.5v and only turning back on at 3.45v. I raised level 1 high voltage in the PC to 3.6v but the release is still 3.45v and cannot be altered. Let us know if you make a firmware update for everyone.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia I'd say that as far as story telling goes, the video was amongst the most well done I have seen from you. Perhaps the way you did the end sequence wasn't intentional, but it was, in a way, artistic. KZfaq videos like yours aren't refined like a TV show, but the way you told the story matters. @@BobHannent I take this as a big compliment, thank you very much. During my summary at the end, I disconnected everything again and packed it back in the box to visually symbolise my verdict and conclusion about this BMS. You have an eye and understanding for that, which is great. Not many would have picked up on that but still, it transferred the message across to them and helped them 'feel' what the verdict was about. I'm also a big Casey Neistat fan and analysed most of his videos in terms of story telling. I have learned a lot from him but it's hard find my own way. I'm still at the beginning of that and learning with every video I make. Thanks again for your feedback. It helps me a lot🙏

@@OffGridGarageAustralia really ? Do you really believe that this will done by a fw update ? I doubt that any chinese company will meet your expectations within 1 fw update. It will take ages and update over update before you might see the light on the end of a tunnel as we had seen so often for example neey needed 4 product iterations more or less till you seemed to be happy. Most chinese will not have the endurance to do that over and over again.

Andy, I learned something while tinkering today - When you put a small fan on the passive balancer resistors the rate at which they bleed balance vastly improves - I mean 2 or 3 fold - I guess surface mounting resistors run hot and their resistance really ramps up making them bleed far less - I expected some improvement but it was way beyond expectation - easily capable of keeping large 100a cells in balance - I used a small 5 v fan.

@OffGridGarageAustralia Ай бұрын
Passive balancer...🤔
@jbuszkie
@jbuszkie Ай бұрын
I'm sorry but that cannot be true. Passive resistors don't change that much with temperature. Typical thin film resistors have a TCR in the 100s of PPM. Even if it was 500PPM (parts per million) a 100C temperature rise would only increase the resistance by 5% which the current would only decrease by 5%. not 200% to 300%. what you might be seeing is the BMS monitoring the temp of those resistors and it turns them on or off based the temp. So a small fan will keep them cooler so the BMS will keep them "on" continuously vs cycling them on and off due to temperature.

I completely agree with your assessment Andy. I've been using the Daly BMS for a while now with the wifi and it works great. This new BMS seems to be a carbon copy of the bigger Dalys with a few minor differences. Daly has a new S series BMS which is supposed to be high current...can do up to 500A discharge and 250A charge. Would love to see your review on that one if you ever get your hands on one. One of the things I find Daly has missed in previous BMS generations and this new 100 series as well, is a high voltage and low voltage recovery setting similar to what the JK has. I think if Daly could incorporate that feature into their products, work out a few bugs and improve their documentation, they could increase their competitiveness.

I have several 250A Daly BMS here but had no support from them in terms of setting them up correctly. They Wifi implementation didn't work at the time and nobody seemed to know how to set it up. So they are still resting in their original boxes. They promised to be able to change the FW quickly as per customer needs, so I got excited and wanted to test their new BSM out. Daly for the win, you know... but the lack of support and not knowing when I asked questions... A huge company should be at the forefront. Well, JK clearly too the lead here!

Thank you for your feedback . We have professional team to solve all these issues as andy mention . We have upgrade the version from Version 1.0 to be version 1.2. 1).Cable are too short ? The length of sampling cable are same as Daly's bms is 450mm. As we know, lengthening the cable means increased costs, not all customers require very long cables ,If the customer needs an extension, we can customize it specially or provide accessories as optional.(we have 800mm sampling cable) 2).Key switch cable ? many customers have switch head,and some customer switch head have some personalized design , so we only provide free key switch cable , meeting personalized customer needs 3).The USB quality of WIFI is bad ?Improper operation can cause USB damage. Our USB cannot be directly connected to high-voltage equipment without isolation, and can only be directly plugged into the computer port 4) Balance on problem ? Previously , stop balancing work after reaching level one high voltage alarm,but now the product has been upgraded and can always be balanced before reaching the overcharge voltage 5) SOC issues .The new version 1.2 has modified the hardware and the SOC will accurate. 6) Docking inverter protocol Yes, new version 1.2 can be docked with inverter protocol . We accept all of people to provide presious idea to improve our products, we will try our best to meet the market demand . You should try Hibms. I use them support is good. As for remote data, well I get around that by having my own hardware which is never down, doesn't fake data and keeps it local. Does the same thing too. At the mo I have this for just a few devices, but shall be expanding, in fact I'm making what I'm calling "the node" which is a "featured" display and interactive device that pulls data from inverters and battery and solar. I've also developed a 'smart array' controller. This is on a back burner as the node Is taking more of time. BMS systems do need to come some way and be standardised. As I have to code for each type, because they want to use different keys. Some are copied... China ey? Keep up the good work.

Vermutung das Ding is hin.

Thanks a lot for sharing. They were trying to blame my setup but I knew it was their adapter which was not isolated and some of the load current went through their adapter back to ground. This melted the internal controller as shown in the video. A different brand of adapter may help but the problem could also be on the BMS site.

I hope the manufacturer addresses the issues with this product, most importantly the Active Balancing behavior, as I believe it to be unique solution for those in need of a well protected (housed) BMS with Active Balancing that can be used in both 4S and 8S configurations. Unless I am mistaken, the enclosed Jk BMS with AB is only available in a minimum 8S version. I live in the tropics and build solar electric boats, and unfortunately our environment can be quite hard on electronics due to the salt air, condensation, electrolysis of dissimilar metals, geckos, etc.., so a waterproof/resistant BMS in a sealed enclosure would be most ideal.

@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 күн бұрын
They won't. I had a lengthy discussion with them, and they are happy with their current design and won't change it. The problem with sealed BMS or electronics is heat dissipation. You probably have to build your own enclosure and ensure sufficient cooling. I want one of these electric boats, Will! They look amazing!
@kauaislash5
@kauaislash5 Күн бұрын
Bummer to hear that. Thanks for the heads up. I will have to go a different route then. No doubt heat is the enemy, but at least in those situations components can often be replaced. Corrosion damage from salty condensation by comparison, is a total killer. Might experiment with thermally conductive silicone polymer encapsulate next build. I suspect most standard BMS boards leave the factory with only a light coating of oil. Thanks for the kind words on the boats. You should build one for yourself! Old boats in need of repurposing are plentiful, and if you like to spend time relaxing on the water, doing so using the sun while cruising along to the sound of trickling water is such a great way to experience it. Of course if you prefer to go fast, you’ll need some big batteries and a lot of solar!

Cell Volt Hi Level 1 triggers @0.1V below the high voltage cell disconnect setting and stops balancing at this point. Balancing will remain off until the Level 1 alarm is reset. I've complained about this bug months ago. They refuse to change it, stating that the BMS cannot monitor Hi Level 2 disconnect voltage while simultaneously balancing and that enabling this option would result in high voltage overshooting the disconnect voltage and possible cell damage. They claim that JK is known for cell damage because of this feature being enabled, I call BS. It also will only balance while charging. If Hi L1 is triggered and charge is removed, it will never resume balancing even if the L1 alarm is reset. Another bug I've found that they refuse to correct (at least in the 4S-8S version) is that if any changes are made to the default high voltage disconnect limit voltage of 3.6V, the BMS will reset to default after some time, and display a default settings warning nag asking if you would like to make changes. As long as you leave the high voltage disconnect limit voltage at the default 3.6V, you can change the rest of the settings without triggering the default reset or nag message. And one more bug I've found, if you change the default password, none of the individual cell voltages will be displayed on the main display screen until the password is entered. If you leave the password at default or change it back to default, the individual cell voltages will remain. So much potential, it's unfortunate that Daly engineers have their blinders on...

Hello Andy, Firstly, your video was well done, and I appreciate your insights. However, I'd like to address a few points from my perspective: The 100BALANCE BMS is a low-voltage product, and its USB data cable is not intended for connecting to high-voltage devices. Therefore, when you connect the USB to high-voltage equipment, it can lead to mishaps. The user manual clearly states that the USB is meant for connecting to a PC for battery data viewing, not for linking to other devices. If you require additional testing functionalities, it's essential to communicate with the supplier for customization. This is not a flaw in the product but rather a matter of product positioning. The misunderstanding in the video arose due to a lack of communication with the supplier. The target market for the 100BALANCE BMS series is pack factories. Their operational model involves customizing output lines according to projects and keeping suitable spare output lines. Therefore, the length of output lines can be customized by users themselves or by requesting the manufacturer to extend them, but this naturally comes with increased costs. While charging and discharging currents can be made consistent, it would require increasing the gauge of the output lines. 100BALANCE BMS is a new brand, and compatibility with inverter interface protocols is currently in progress. New software is planned for release in April. Please continue to stay updated! Version 1.1 has addressed the issue of whether the active equalization module can function during overvoltage protection. Even if overvoltage protection is activated, the BMS will continue to balance under appropriate conditions. In conclusion, this brand has accumulated many years of expertise, with its technical development almost parallel to that of established brands. The only difference lies in the timing of market entry. Being a later entrant has allowed 100BALANCE BMS to avoid certain flaws present in other BMS systems and incorporate additional technologies. These include cloud platforms, Wi-Fi capabilities, direct parallel connection, built-in Bluetooth modules, and the ability to operate in both series and parallel configurations, thus better meeting the needs of customers. I believe this is a promising product that will continue to evolve in the future.

So, again, please do feel free to give me a time stamp as too where he connected it to a high voltage source? Also, nothing in Andy's off grid setup is "high voltage" all the USB ports on Victrons equipment is isolated.... So, unless you are saying it is not, I would select my words a bit more cautiously. 2: The ground fault that came up after he connected the USB dongle to his computers USB PORT, is indicative of a floating ground potential indicating a VERY poor design and a very big design flaw inside the Balance100 USB DONGLE where the USB dongle IS NOT ISOLATED! The Balance100 is in need of some further development, nothing Andy said was intended as being an attack on the product, it was meant as being constructive criticism. Andy has been doing this long enough that he is an independent reviewer. Andy was comparing the Balance100 to the JK BMS which is also actively balanced. Furthermore..... The fact that you find the "need" to defend the company and try to fault Andy's testing shows where your allegiance lies........ Good day...

What do you mean by output? It discharges the cell with high voltage and transfers the energy to the cell with the lowest voltage in the pack. I still have to open the BMS and see if they use super caps to store the energy. That's how JK does it (until their new BS comes out).
@trevoro.9731
@trevoro.9731 Ай бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Ideally, the active balancer should include isolated dc-dc converter, which can be connected to the output of the battery in case of discharging, that is, partially redirect the charge of the cell when you are using the battery, as it results in minimal loss. Let's say, your battery output is 12V, the ideal balancer should discharge 1 cell with the highest voltage to that 12V using DC-DC converter (galvanically isolated). Plus, a switching circuit to switch to any cell with the highest voltage. That is, it should support unequal discharge of the cells. As well as charging via the same or separate converter.
@trevoro.9731
@trevoro.9731 Ай бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustraliaIn best case, you should be able to charge and discharge a battery made of different cells (even different chemistry) with similar capacity with fine regulation of charge and discharge current for each cell individually without much energy loss except for an additional stage of DC-DC conversion (roughly 10% of energy loss for the value of difference in capacity).

Ciao Andy, I noticed something in your settings, which, at this point, seems to be the default, because it was the same in my Daly BMS and caused me some troubles. Level 1 is alarm and Level 2 is protection. Level 1 should be always more conservative than Level 2, as Daly support confirmed me. Your over current discharge level 1 is 100A and level 2 is 80A. I have a Voltronic inverter connected via RS485 to the WNT interface which is connected to the Daly BMS. It was happening that during very sunny days the BMS was stopping the charge mosfets for several hours and the battery was never fully charged. Then I understood why. The communication protocol set into the inverter is LIB and this set automatically the max charging current reading it from the BMS. Can you guess which of the two values was taking? Yes, .... Level 1 And for this reason the protection was always triggered 😂. Other bad thing is that the mobile app doesn't allow you to set both levels, but just Level 2. In my opinion (but I don't have experience with other brands) their hardware seems good, but they have to improve documentation and software which is too complicated and has strange behaviours. Bye.

Standards Australia should be very interested in this product because it actually has the capacity to allow a battery runaway. I suspect the majority of battery fires from electric scooters to electric cars are caused by a faulty or badly designed BMS, NOT the battery itself! if this was a Mains power product it would be immediately recalled, and yet with the possibility of it causing a major fire and possibly death there is little oversight by govt on the these products or their suppliers.

about balancing.. when one cell rises ..it tries to take more with it and all rise so its not hard to bring pack to balance voltage BUT ..... if you start balance with that cell then the others will throw you out of balance voltage almost right after the loss of this higher voltage cell reduce voltage!!!!!! and so on .. in this bms i guess that if no big charge pushing then balancer will kick on and off many times until a good ammount of charging let it balance continiously!!!!.. not so great . BTW i hate the temp i saw yesterday at minus 15 in my jk and i m going to install some tiny heat pads under the pack with timer 1 hour before sun apears just to be sure
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia Ай бұрын
I don't think that's how it works. All cells can be balanced individually without affecting the others.
