The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service upon the United States against the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, just before 08:00, on Sunday, December 7, 1941. The United States was a neutral country at the time; the attack led to its formal entry into World War II the next day.
Japan intended the attack as a preventive action. Its aim was to prevent the United States Pacific Fleet from interfering with its planned military actions in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and those of the United States. Over the course of seven hours, there were coordinated Japanese attacks on the U.S.-held Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island and on the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
The attack commenced at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time (18:18 GMT). The base was attacked by 353 Imperial Japanese aircraft (including fighters, level, and dive bombers, and torpedo bombers) in two waves, launched from six aircraft carriers. Of the eight U.S. Navy battleships present, all were damaged, with four sunk. All but USS Arizona were later raised, and six were returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. A total of 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 others were wounded. Important base installations such as the power station, dry dock, shipyard, maintenance, and fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence section) were not attacked. Japanese losses were light: 29 aircraft and five midget submarines were lost, and 64 servicemen were killed. Kazuo Sakamaki, the commanding officer of one of the submarines, was captured.

Note: there were no coal fired battleships in the U.S. Navy in 1941, let alone at Pearl Harbor. Oklahoma was different from the other ships in that it had reciprocating type engines instead of steam turbines or turbo-electric drive like the other battleships present there.

one of the biggest mistakes of the Japanese made and when you think about it now you wonder how they could have been so stupid, is that they attacked the fleet at anchor in a shallow harbor. Now they're thinking was they can hit all the ships at once and not the United States completely out of wartime capability in the Pacific. But what they didn't count on is two things. number one the entire fleet was not at anchor. Several ships including all the carriers brought out on maneuvers. The other issue is that American industry and ingenuity can rebuild in no time flat. All but two ships were raised and repaired and returned to service. And the story of the Helena is one of true American vengeance against the Japanese

One disadvantage tactic the Japanese have done on Pearl Harbor is that it is a Harbor, meaning Shallow Water. Therefore when these battleship sink, they can potentially still be salvageable. The goal is to have ALL the Ships TOTALED. Here we see most of the ships were DAMAGED, but NOT TOTALED compared to USS Arizona & USS Oklahoma. The best way to have ALL the Ships TOTALED is to have at least an armada of Japanese planes keep on pounding Pearl Harbor. Heck, maybe have the Yamato doing artillery strikes on Pearl Harbor. That way, we see more TOTALED ships instead of DAMAGED ships. This also meant full invasion of Hawaii by Japan instead of sending "2 waves" of Japanese planes. Overall, for Japan, they should have done an "All In" strategy, by sending ALL their planes COMBINED with using their Battleships to completely "soften up" Pearl Harbor & therefore will see more Totaled Ships.

Considering the Yamato was commissioned (ready for service) Dec 16th 1941 (9 days after this attack), I'm not sure how you expect it to be part of the Japanese fleet.
@dontran391
@dontran391 Жыл бұрын
@@Maxvla Yamato was commissioned on December 16, 1941? I thought she was commissioned earlier in 1941... My mistake... So for the paragraph above of "Yamato doing artillery strikes on Pearl Harbor", replace "Yamato" with other older known Japanese Battleships, such as Nagato, Mutsu, Fuso, and/or Yamashiro.

The Japanese Fleet did not have the logistical force to support a continued attack on Pearl or an invasion. Much of their fleet was conducting other operations at the time, invading Malaya, Philippines, etc. Your observations are not realistic for the capability of the Japanese forces.

There were no soldiers on the USS Oklahoma. Soldiers are in the US Army. The Oklahoma was a Navy ship thus those killed were sailors and Marines. Get your facts straight.

The US Navy and US Air force were completely unprepared for any sort of attack. On what planet were the commanders living?
@patrickmccrann991

Easy to think that but not realistic. Radar and radio communication were still primitive by today's standards. No U.S. Air Force in 1941, still part of the Army and just becoming a force to be recognized.
