That was a Sapphire-only variant, right? That certainly would've been a more cost-effective way to go. Even the 3GB 280X held on plenty long. I have a soft spot for Sapphire 7970/280X cards -- my first modernish gaming GPU was a Vapor-X 280X! I just think "futureproofing" is a pretty idiotic pursuit in general, or at least one that is *grossly* overhyped in places like Reddit's /r/buildapc. It seems that more than anything it's just a justification for spending huge money on splurge hardware rather than any intent to meaningfully gain longevity. If this channel still exists in 2034, I'm gonna have fun looking back at the RTX 4090 and retroactively dunking on people who talked about buying one to be "futureproof" lol

Imo "futureproofing" works if its the architecture, for example GCN1 was a clear "futureproof" arch for better or worse, RDNA1 wasnt amd going full throttle, but RDNA2 was. Similarily zen/zen+ was basically core2 quad "glued dies together", but zen2 is something new (seperating io and cores). Anther example would be pascal from nvidia, after dragging out 28nm for way too long, pascal was something exciting. So I wouldnt call it futureproofing but rather taking an educated guess if a new tech product is architecturally good or not . Side note, personally if i were to build a pc back in 2016-2019 it would have been an LGA2011 xeon, now that was futureproof. @@doesitgame

The W9100 is the pro version of the R9 290X, which is a lot faster than the 7970. The 7970 doesn't come anywhere close to the RX 570 and 480. There is no way you're going to get a 50% overclock on that card, which is what you would need to get it to match an RX 570. The W9100 is in the same class as the RX 570 without overclocking.

It was a lot of fun for period-correct games, though! But I’d have to play at like 16K to get Saints Row IV to use anywhere near the VRAM 🤣

I have one of those, too! Love that it's single slot, but it has its own issues. I guess it depends on what the cost is, what the intended use is, and what the alternatives are. If it's the best available 8GB card within a set budget, I could see it being a viable choice. But it's going to have the same issue with drivers, and it's a less powerful card overall...with some glaring thermal problems to ice the cake. All else being equal, an AliExpress RX 580 2048SP is probably a significantly better option than a W7100 for most use cases. If you already have a W7100, or specifically need a single slot design, go for it! The WX7100, on the other hand, is a very useful little card.

I may or may not have a 1660S en route... And the 4770K could be interesting. I'd wager it's faring worse than the Haswell/Broadwell HEDT chips are, but it's still a legend.
