The 2023 Toyota Venza Limited Is An Overshadowed Lexus-Like Hybrid SUV

The #ToyotaVenza was brought back to the #Toyota lineup about 2 years ago as a more upscale, hybrid only midsize SUV. For 2023, the latest #Venza gets a few tweaks including a new infotainment system, updated tech, and a new #VenzaNightShade trim level. It still has a very #Lexus like feel for those of you who don't need the fancy badge.

The poor sales numbers are solely due to total absence of the venzas on the dealer lots. They cannot make enough of them. Waiting time for limited trim is 4-6 months.

The RAV4 is probably somewhat to blame for that, probably not enough drivetrain components for both of them.

This! Was on the waiting list for a 2022 in July last year but they ran out and have now been on the waiting for a 2023 limited edition since September...and no venzas in sight. Toyota simply isn't building them fast enough.

The appeal of this car, at least for me, is that it is way more attractive looking than a RAV4 and it's way more rare in the wild. Another thing is that the Venza's trims and packaging is way more simple, especially for 2023. Finding a RAV4 Hybrid without being gouged by a dealer is already hard enough; now try finding a RAV4 Hybrid specifically with (for example) a pano roof or rain sensing wipers. For 2023, the Venza Limited gets the advanced tech package standard, so if a Venza Limited shows up on a dealer lot, you KNOW you're getting all the features you want.

I noticed that about the Rav4. Have been shopping for the wife's replacement vehicle and can hardly find a new Hybrid locally for MSRP. Her current Ford Escape Hybrid is great but she's been nagging me about the mileage getting high (our first car that we've kept to 100k). May just trade it in for a new 2023 Escape this spring if our local Toyota dealers don't cut the gouging.

@@ajf5745 Our 2016 Escape Hybrid has been very good. Has 108k and we're the original owners, no issues ever aside from a couple tire pressure monitors which I imagine will need replaced in any modern car. Still on the original brake pads even. Gas mileage has always under-performed a bit but not by much, likely the way my wife drives lol. Would like a Rav4 to keep for the long haul based on reviews but would trust another Ford Escape as well... At least we can find one for MSRP lol.

Yes..this is the perfect car for people looking to replace their first or even second gen Lexus RXs (also was the older Toyota Harrier in some markets). I could also see this appealing to the people that previously bought the Toyota Avalon. Comfort-oriented buyers that are looking for good value, and aren't badge snobs that insist on having a Lexus/luxury brand. While cargo space is lacking in comparison to Rav4 and others, it has enough space for a lot of buyers. I disagree with Sofyan, and think the styling will age way better than the current Rav4 due to the Venza's simplicity and smooth lines. The Rav4 I always thought looked ok in its proportions, but it's trying too hard to look tough and slightly overstyled to my eyes.

I prefer the Venza's exterior lines over those of the RAV4 styling, which I view as "blocky" and more utilitarian. The interior seating is more comfortable in the Venza. The somewhat reduced cargo capacity is not an issue for me. Finally, I understand that Toyota is not releasing a lot of Venzas, so the wait times can be frustrating.

First of all, thank you for being the only mainstream reviewer who did a video on the ‘23 Venza. I’ve had my ‘23 Venza Limited with StarGaze (in Ruby Flare with the Boulder interior) for a little over a month now, and after about 1,200 miles I am in love. My husband got a ‘23 RAV4 Hybrid XSE (in Cavalry Blue) and I feel I got the nicer car for sure. He loves his RAV4; but, my Venza is just so premium. Quieter, smoother (although his smaller wheels make harsh bumps a bit smoother), and a few extra features that he wishes he had (power steering column, lock and close liftgate button, power-folding mirrors and head up display). The 1200-watt JBL sound system also blows the RAV4’s 800-watt JBL out of the freakin’ water. Overall it’s a fantastic car, and I’m happy I got it instead of paying out the ass for an NX.

If I had a family-spouse and a couple of kids still in school-this would not be the car for me simply because of the space constraints. Families have sports gear and luggage and all kinds of stuff they drive around with, depending on the day’s destination and agenda. This is not a practical vehicle for that SUV customer profile. But I’m 69, single, semi-retired, and this is perfect for my lifestyle. Plenty of room for a passenger or two plus some luggage for a road trip or just the usual grocery and other shopping. No need for speed or sporty maneuvering, and luxury features make it a wonderfully enjoyable ride. Retirement incomes often don’t support the extra expense of a Lexus or other luxury cars. Boomer generation singles and couples are active and adventurous and living long lives. I think this is the perfect niche SUV for us. 😊

Exactly! This is an "Almost Lexus" for less. And the styling is more timeless. To me, it bears a strong resemblence to the 2004-2009 Toyota Harrier/Lexus RX, and the styling will hold up over time compared to a RAV4 that will be severley out of touch at the next re-design.

We love our '21 Venza Limited in blueprint blue with the grey Softex interior. I really like the styling. It is reminiscent of a Jag/Lexus but it also is unique when looking at other Toyotas (Looking similar to the RX makes sense when you consider that the first 2 generations of the RX were rebadged Toyota Harriers.). Amazing gas mileage, averaging 38 mpg from day one. we bought it. Great power. Just did a trip from Vancouver BC to Laguna Beach and it was quiet, comfortable, drove well. It was much quieter than the RAV4 and at the time, it felt roomier and more affordable than the Lexus NX. Honestly, unless you're gunning it from light to light, it is quiet when driving. I do like the updated infotainment centre on the '23. I know people buy the NX for the Lexus name but honestly, the Venza is just as good and you will save a lot of money when you compare feature to feature. Great video and thank you for sharing about the Venza. We are seeing more and more of them here.

I've had my 2021 Venza for just over 1 1/2 years -- Love it! Traded my 2015 RAV4 LTD, and the Venza is SO much quieter, better riding, and more powerful vs. the last gen RAV4, and the interior is much better quality. Obviously, the styling limits the cargo capacity a bit, but not that much. ALL the professional road reviews criticize the space, but the cargo space almost exactly matches that of my comp set at a better price --- Audi Q5, BMW X3, Acura RDX, Genesis GV70, and of course Lexus NX -- The cargo capacity of all these compact Lux Crossovers are similar, so Venza is not exactly deficient there. Toyota still reserved some sound insulation for the Lexus version, which is annoying , but still love my Venza for $10K+ less.

the beginning of the making of the lexus RX was indeed the same base as the toyota harrier in japan, even in terms of interior and exterior it was almost exactly the same because the harrier was JDM (right steering wheel) and the RX was for the American market (left steering wheel) but since 2015, toyota has decided that the harrier there is no longer a part with the lexus rx. The real Toyota Crown is Toyota's number 2 most premium car (especially when it was still adopting RHD only) after the Century and the Harrier is Toyota's most premium SUV after the Land Cruiser So it still makes sense that the two cars are like the Lexus cars rather than the Toyota itself, in the case of the Crown it's actually the Lexus GS's counterpart

I drive a 2021 Venza limited. The observations in this video are accurate. The car is very “competent, but not engaging” (a great description). In supplementing the video, I’d agree the driver seating is comfortable, especially the lumbar support, but the seat cushion could benefit from a thigh extender. Getting in and out takes my hat off my head: it’s tight. Once inside room is fine. Gas mileage is great, and the back and forth from gas to electric is not noticeable unless you are looking at the display that tells you which one is in use. The engine noise is mentioned in the video, but really it’s nothing to notice. However, tire and road noise is significant and annoying unless you are on a glass-smooth pavement. My car has the older Toyota safety-sense 2.0 and I do hope the newer 2.5 has improved upon the adaptive cruise and especially the lane centering. Also the GPS navigation in my car was out of date from day one- couldn’t find the local post office and puts my house on the wrong side of the street. All in all, Toyota has included many details that are unexpected and the car is good apart from my complaints above.

One of the push-buttons on theJBL Nav/Audio system of my 2003 Camry practically needs a hammer to make it respond. It started going bad over 10 years ago. I would MUCH prefer a knob. I’ve tried using a contact cleaner to little avail. Also, is there a ‘Mute’ button, or other switch, for instant quieting of the system? With volume buttons, it’s ‘press & wait’.

Guess I am lucky. The Toyota dealership I went with yesterday has no markups or add ons. I ordered the XLE for MSRP of course for $38330. They won’t budge off of MSRP but like I said no other markups. I was told the dealership owner told all of the salespeople last year that this is what they were going to do no matter how much other dealerships were marking them up. I still have a 4 to 8 month wait on it unless I am lucky and they get one in their allocations before that. They did tell me it was possible that it may come in before the end of summer because Toyota is ramping up their manufacturing a little. I won’t hold my breath. 😊 The dealership is in Wisconsin.

If you drive both a rav4 hybrid and venza you would never pick the rav4 over the venza. Venza is quieter, has better interior materials, interior looks nicer, feels less rattly, suspension feels like it handles bumps better. It is a no brainer. I sell toyotas.

just randomly checked toyota canada's website, and I swear they jacked up the price a LOT vs 2021. a limited trim is 54k CAD. i could swear in 2021, they topped out at ~48k. combined with the smaller interior, i'm not surprised they're losing out vs the RAV4

Yeah, I don't really get why he thinks why both the Rav4 and NX is so much better. Rav4 is less refined and has somewhat busy/trendy styling. Lexus NX is a LOT more money than the Venza for not a ton more car/features. They all seem like well differentiated products for different buyers. Rav4 is sporty/budget/practical minded, Venza is premium comfort/value-oriented, and NX is for more luxury and having a luxury brand name.

Sales number for this car for 2022 are probably low because they are made in Japan and shipped to the US. Whereas the RAV4 is made in America. People in 2022 were/are still on a waitlist for a Venza and are on it for 7 months to a year.

No exterior changes for the 2023 model year of the Toyota Venza but on the inside the interior it has Toyota’s updated and newer infotainment system and it’s similar to Lexus’s infotainment system.

It’s the exact same system as “Lexus’ new system.” It’s called Toyota Audio Multimedia (or Lexus Interface) and is present in the ‘22 Tundra, ‘23 Sequoia, Prius, Venza, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Cross, Crown, Mirai and Highlander (along with ‘23 RX, NX, UX, LX, ES, and I believe LS). I may have missed a model or two off the top of my head.

as a Venza owner, I am regularly concerned about this. however, on XLE and Limited you get a full-width third brake light; so, if you’re braking for a turn, people generally notice that. for lane changes and whatnot, I always just make sure there’s a gap before going. I’ve never been one to flip on my signal and wait for someone to let me over haha!

I drive a 2021 Venza limited and this version appears to be very similar. The pluses of this car are its mileage and its power train which is very smooth and responsive at all speeds due to the electric assist. The road and wind noise is a bit intrusive, but engine noise is not. However, what I’d like to know is whether the lane centering and adaptive cruise has improved. I have turned off lane centering because it just turns off for no apparent reason now and then, and is easily confused near highway exits. Just can’t trust it. And the adaptive cruise also disengages when the leading vehicle enters a curve and sometimes just for fun. So you have to keep an eye on it to see if it really is working.

I’d add that the provided navigation system is the pits. For example, it will guide you to a shopping mall and just dump you at the entrance instead of guiding you to the store. And it cannot find one post office near my house that has been there for years.
@evdanielsson7
@evdanielsson7 Жыл бұрын
Road and wind noise has been extensively dampened since 2021. I have a ‘23 Limited, and the front windows are laminated (not on ‘21, unsure about ‘22), and the interior is extremely quiet. I think they heard that complaint and fixed it. The lane centering and adaptive cruise has also improved. TSS 2.5+ is waaaay better than the TSS 2.0 that the ‘21 Venza (and my ‘20 Corolla) had.

I sat in a 2023 RAV4, as well as a Venza. I just ordered a 2024 Venza through my work. It’s not even a question the difference between the two. If you’re looking for a basic car to get you around or I guess you need towing capacity, the RAV4 is your car. When you sit in it, it feels like an off the assembly line rental car. Perfectly fine for the price. When you sit in the Venza, you feel like you are in a cockpit by comparison, and it feels great. A few annoying aspects to Toyota decision making was to not include heated steering wheel in the XLE or a sunroof. You have to upgrade to the premium trim if you want a heated steering wheel, which is essentially a basic feature in most new cars.
