I have a new Tacoma with the 4 banger turbo. I've also owned the current V6 4Runner for 10 years. There is no comparison in the performance. However, most of arguments about reliability that I've read from folks are related to fears around the turbo. But the first generation 4Runner was a turbo. Toyota's been doing turbos for 40 years. They know what they're doing.

Some of the fears have been legitimate for a few cases that have hit the Tundra, and I think overall Toyota understands the nature of their reliability being a reason people buy their cars. The biggest hurdle is the pricing and I think thats causing more people to scrutinize everything.

@@CarQuicks I worked for Toyota (corporate) in a marketing related position 20 years ago. My new 4x4 TRD offroad Tacoma, when compared with with the 2004 model (back when I worked for Toyota) is almost the same price adjusted for inflation. But it has even more features, power, etc... But the actual price of the model is almost the same as the 2004 model. Maybe even less.

@@CarQuicks Just for fun, I actually just looked up a 4x4 2003 Tacoma, which would be almost the exact level of Tacoma as mine now in terms of options (at least for the times because mine has more). The price is almost exactly the same adjusted for inflation, down to a couple hundred dollars.

Noooo... you don't like the 6th Gen? I do understand though, my own mother-in-law has a 4Runner and I knew changes like Turbo 4-cylinders and only Hybrid power was definitely going to move this into an area that the true fans would not like. I appreciate you watching the podcast!

I agree thumbs down for new 4Runner .. the V6 engine in old 4 runner is probably the most reliable SUV on earth.. old 4 runner you get 500k miles no way in a turbo engine

That is going to be Toyotas biggest challenge, they didn't change anything for over a decade and the reliability of that V6 cannot just be replaced. Time will tell.
