AHHHH! -Yes, -I recall sawing a video that seemed to portend that a 'longer slow-air chamber' affects the sound! In my (admittedly limited) experience making bamboo Native American-style Flutes, I personally have found that a longer SAC made no appreciable difference in sound. I strive for a 4-to-5 inch long SAC, but tried making an 8-inch and 9-inch long Slow Air Chamber. It just made the flute longer and harder to reach the finger holes...

The echo in that room really helps. I used to search out buildings like that when I played fiddle. Thanks for the update.

True! I like playing my pan and NAFs in the laundry room or garage shed where the acoustics tend to improve the notes I play. :-)

Hello dear man, My wife has purchased a flute kit, amplifier and wireless mic yesterday Sat. Mar. 24, 2018 as a gift for me and I very much look forward to it's arrival. I do hope that the wired mic that comes with the kits is not substituted with the wireless, I wish for both for fitting circumstances. I feel that these kits will make great gifts and will be asking for more when the holidays approach... I'm enjoying your videos. Love to you dear one.

Hey Charlie, that flute has me mesmerised.

The Seagull Merlin (strummable dulcimer) is getting big and is in the key of D (and some in a G). I also find the D string the most pleasing on the violin. Also, you can get tongue drums in that key. Many are looking into playing healing music to folks at the bedside. Lower notes seem more pleasing to those seeking stress relief. Just a thought as to why the deeper tones may be more popular. I will say though That the only reason I wanted a low D was because it matched two or three other instruments we’ve got. I had no clue how many inches it was.

I toyed with the idea of a longer mouthpiece area on an Am flute, knowing it won't make any difference in sound, but would make for a longer flute overall. Merely asthetics, I suppose. No one seems to make longer SAC's to accomdate this. (Mostly because it offers no advantage). Thanks for sharing. I enjoy your videos.

Hehe, “Maybe it's the Will of The Creator that the 24” flute comes into existence..”? Good stuff. I am not yet far past the beginning of my flute adventure (having just gotten settled into my new woodshop arrangement for it) and wonder what I will eventually determine is my favorite length for the so-called “slow air chamber” and/or any “breath hole” channel leading to it. You have these writers (and their followers) who prefer something like a 5.5” long SAC plus a 2.5” long breath hole equaling a whopping (if not odd-looking) 7” before the block! My arms are long enough, and I don't care if it looks weird to someone, but I wonder if an advanced flute player would feel less, direct breath-control over the flute with such a thing? I look forward to experimenting and finding my favorite things, benefiting all along from Charlie's lifetime of experience poured into writing and video for everyone.

Hi Charlie, I've just emailed a bamboo supplier here in the u.k as I'm going to try my 3rd attempt at flute making, I want to make an low sounding flute so I have asked the supplier to pick me a piece around 25" long ( so I can take a little away if I mess up, and I asked for a pith diameter of around 1inch, and for a knot/nodule to be around 4.5 inches from the blow hole , do you think this is reasonable to work with?, thankyou

Some of what I play requires a six whole flute. Do you make some that way?
@BlueBearFlutes Жыл бұрын
I do make six hole flutes but I do not make them in the modern style that you're talking about. All of my five hole flutes play that note you're asking about.

Funny, David Sanipass is the last Lnu'k (Micmac) flute maker. I ordered two pack-flutes from him and they were both 24" long. One was a D, the other an f#.

I've got a question for you. I am pretty new to your channel, I just found you yesterday. I have made a few pvc flutes that look similar to yours. I was wondering if there is a way to make it louder, as mine are quite soft. Is it a matter of flute materials? Lengths? I don't know. I'd love your advice on how to improve my flutes.
Do you have a video and sound clip of a walking stick flute.
@BlueBearFlutes5 жыл бұрын
A couple, however these days our walking stick flutes are in the key of low E. That sound sample can be found on bluebearflutes.com on the info page.

Hey! Im curious, i have your low c flute but the end doesnt look like those... in fact its very thick walled at the bottom... is there a reason for that? Mine is eastern red cedar 6 hole tuned to 528 hz.

Thank you Charlie, that short embedded clip of the cargo cult phenomena does explain human behaviour as far as replicating something they desire or have an affinity for. You are a good teacher. I have urged all my followers to draw your likeness on a flag and hang it in front of their house to start a (Charlie cult) ...lol ...jk

Charlie, I found this video very interesting, but it leaves me with one last question. Aside from length, how does the diameter affect the sound and air requirements?
@BlueBearFlutes5 жыл бұрын
Excellent question James! If you would imagine that the diameter of the flute is 7/8 in and the duration of the sound wave is 1 in, this would make a flute that is little muffled. On the other hand if the inside diameter is 7/8 of an inch and the duration or with of the sound wave is 1/2 inch, this will make a flute with a very bright tone. Somewhere in between lies the perfect tone.

People like the low octives in Native American sound.
@BlueBearFlutes5 жыл бұрын
That is very true. This was brought on by the early days of black and white movies with cowboys and Indians. The original sound of the flute played in those movies was a silver transverse flute which is lower in tone than the original Native American Flutes. My concern is over the fact that I can make a flute in a very high tone 24 inches long and I hope that people realize the different flute makers all over the world also make the same tone flute in different lengths. Thanks for commenting. :)

People of today dont give enough credit to the intelligence of the people of the past. Space aliens didnt build the pyramids, stonehenge or anything else of the sort. Im sure today, if there was no tv, radio, computer, or cell phone to make people dumber, we would have many more great inventions. As for those little gold air planes, they are just an artists rendition of a flying fish. Which was probably very difficult to catch at that time, but was seen at a distance.
@BlueBearFlutes6 жыл бұрын
Alfonse Dente your argument does nothing more than add validity to my statement - even if they are only copying flying fish.

Not saying we agree my friend, just that your comment backs my point. :) I'm also not saying that aliens built the pyramids because if I were an intelligent alien invader, I wouldn't lift a finger! I would have my captives do it for me! Thanks for watching. 👽
