Who needs a 6.5 Creedmoor?
Today we talk about my favorite deer cartridge, the 250-3000 Savage.
The first American production cartridge to hit the 3000 fps mark, this little round is an awesome deer hunting load.
Let's talk about the 250-3000 Savage.

As a kid back in 1970’s my Mom used the Savage 99 in 250-3000 my Aunt Jean had the 99 in .243 my Grand ma had the 99 in .250 My grand father had the 99 in .300. The deer camp was full of Sage 99’s Late on I used my Mom’s rifle for fox hunting. We have talked about reloading for it or rebarreling it. Every other year there is ammo turned out for it. My mom was a fast and deadly shot with the 99 taking many deer and elk. Many on the run. Her rifle was stolen. She tried a Remington 760 in .243 but gave it up and took over her mother’s 99 in .250-3000. My brother now has the rifle as mom is 90 years old.

I just inherited my Dad's 99 in 250-3000. He bought it new in 1948 when he was 14, after saving all summer, and took his first deer on Thanksgiving day. It's my most treasured firearm. Thanks for doing this video! New subscriber!

I had a Ruger M77 RSI in 250-3000. It was a tack driver and I took many white tails with it when I was younger. I loved that rifle. Sadly it was stolen. Thank you for the history lesson!

I have recently got a Savage 99 in 250-Savage and just got a loud developed. Here in New Zealand ammunition for the 250-3000 is very hard to find, so reloading is the only option. I love the history of these older cartridge. I've taken a couple of goats with it and am looking forward to getting a deer with it very soon. Thanks for a great video.

Well spoken . I use old fashioned 3006and 303 and a year ago my wife bought me a 99 savage take down in 243 and I prefer these older rifles and calibers, and being in New Zealand our deer season is all year round so these rifles get used often and I do find it amazing how many people rubbish the older calibers even though they quite often out shoot the modern ones with people that are used to actually hunting rather than sitting back hundreds of metres and shooting and quite often cannot find the animal they shot

I built a .250 Savage on an old Savage Model 10 action that I had. Shilen barrel, 1:8 twist. I use H4831sc with Sierra 117 grain boolits. . My rifle likes 40.5 grs All three of my children took their first deer with it, and one elk too. All taken at less than 100 yards.

I have hunted with a 250 Sav for the past 50 years. I still have my first rifle, a 1986 Swedish Mauser sporterized and re-barreled for the 250. Over the years I added a Ruger M77 and a Rem 700 Classic both in 250. I reload for it, and I let my stepson borrow my Ruger M77 when his 243 was in the shop. After he took several deer with it, I never got it back! He sold his 243 since.

My Dad had a 250-3000 for many years. He made some amazing shots. He said the close shots were the hard shots. Just before he passed he gave it to me. My eyes don't like open sights anymore but my Dad did. He ground the rear sight down until there was only a small V left. He said those big ears get in the way and it's hard to see the deer. If the deer was moving witch happened quite often, he would aim ahead of the deer and wait for the deer to cross the sights. We covered a lot of miles making drives back then so a lot of the deer were on the move when he saw them. His aiming tactic worked well for him and put a lot of meat on the table. That's what it was about back then, it wasn't about the trophy. My Dad loved that gun. I have a Browning BLR 243 With a scope, and I love the magazine, so the 250 Savage will never get used but I know what it can do.

Up here in Canada the 250 savage still has quite a following still. Demand far outpaces factory ammo. I reload so I'm ok. BTW Savage started quickening the rifling twist before 1961. Many in the 1930s have a 1:12 and some have closer to 1:10. My 1946 model 99 take down has a gunsmith measured 1:11 actually. I shoot 75gr Vmax bullets @ 3200 fos for predators, 90gr CX bullets @ 2900 fps for mule/whitetail deer as well as black bear in a pinch. 87 gr BTSP @ 3000 fps are used for speed goat. I also load 100 gr bullets @ 2900 fps as a general all around bullet to have on hand. My old takedown has taken down many deer and coyotes with these loads. My favorite caliber 😉

Another great video! As a trivia tidbit, an account from one of the field tests for the 250-3000 in 1914 tells about how Charles Newton presented a long action 25 caliber cartridge using a 100gr bullet to Savage, and told Savage they needed to lengthen their Model 1899 action for it. This was probably similar to his later 25 Newton cartridge. Savage declined to lengthen their action, and a Savage engineer reworked Newton's long action cartridge down to the short action 250-3000. Then Savage went with the 87gr bullet and slower twist rate to get 3000fps.
@jackofalltrades7822
@jackofalltrades7822 Ай бұрын
I found that info about the 25 Newton as well. It later became the 25-06 in 1969 as I understand it.
@savagelevers1094
@savagelevers1094 Ай бұрын
@@jackofalltrades7822, well, Charles Newton did finalize the 256 Newton and sell it in his own rifles. But his cartridge ended up being a .264 caliber (don't ask me why he called it the 256 Newton), and the 250-3000 by Savage and the 25-06 by Remington were both .257. All, obviously, based off of the 30-06 case.

I know that the .300 Savage is quite popular in Europe partly because a few countries don't allow their residents to own NATO-chambered calibers. Good video! I too am a fan of older hunting calibers--they get the job done!

So happy to see this video ! I happened to read Larry Koller's "Shots at Whitetails" early 2022. I read the whole thing in one weekend. I'll preface with I'm a lever collector. My first passion was Marlins, then Brownings, the Savages, and finally Winchesters. I wouldn't mind finding an affordable Sako Finnwolf either.... I bought my first Savage in 2019, an early 70's 99F and have been kicking myself in the ass for not buying them when they could be had for pennies on today's dollars. They just didn't appeal to me back then... and then I took the first one apart and was simply blown away by the engineering... everything from the internal rotary magazine to the hammerless action to the round counter... and once I finally got my hands on a takedown... yeah... that feature... Way overengineered and way ahead of its time. My second one was purchased in 2020, a beautifully restored 1899A in 30-30. Still haven't fired that one. Moving along, after reading Koller's book, I noticed he took a shining to the 250 Savage.... so I had to have one. The prices at the auction houses for ones in nice shape weren't totally unreasonable, but more than I was willing to spend, so I waited. I was at a local gunsmith that I found by accident having a stock repaired when we got to talking shop. He told me he had a Savage for sale but didn't remember much more about it. We went down to his basement to his "rifle room", and he located and brought it to me for inspection. The first thing I looked at was the chambering... HAH !!! 250-3000 !!! Happy days !!! I didn't know it at the time, but it was a 99R dated to 1935, same year my mom was born, allegedly a rarer 99R because of the chambering. It was in very nice condition, but it was drilled and tapped. He scratched his head, and then finally remembered he had the original Redfield mount for it somewhere, 150 pieces of brass, a few boxes of bullets, and 11 loaded rounds. I won't post what I paid, but let's just say I got the whole package for less than half of what this would sell for anywhere, and I sold off 50 pieces of brass to make the purchase even more enjoyable ! I purchased Leupold bases and an older Leupold Vari-X III, one of my favorite scopes, and loaded 100 rounds in different weight bullets; 75gr, 87gr, and 100gr. Off to the range I went. Even with the 1:14 twist, she stabilized the 100gr just fine and they were moving at an average of 2890FPS. The 75s were moving at 3070FPS, and the 87s, which I intended to hunt with, 3045FPS. Once I got her dialed in, I was putting 5 inside a quarter at 100 yards with all loads. I was blown away with how accurate that rifle is... 2022 rifle season opened in NY. I usually sight in 5 or 6 different rifles and take them out on rotation so they can get some fresh air. First one out was this Savage. At first light, a huge doe comes from behind my stand to my right. I let her walk out in front of me to about 30 yards where she stopped to browse giving me a perfect broadside shot. The savage barked, she didn't jump or flinch, she looked me dead in the eyes, turned her head, and walked about 25 more feet farther out behind some brush where I lost sight of her. My very first thought was I missed her, but I would never understand how that was even possible. I was about to get down from the stand to go looking, but as I turned to my right in the stand, there was another doe, about 30 yards behind me. She wasn't as big as the first one, but there is no way she didn't see me, so she started playing hide and seek behind some brush with me. I froze and slowly got the Savage in position. Eventually, she came out and gave me what I needed. I squeezed the trigger, heard the bang, and watched this doe do a back flip landing on her back. She kicked 3 times and simply stopped moving in that position. Now curiosity got the better of me. I got down from my stand and walked to where I shot the first one. Oddly enough, there was zero blood trail... so I walked up to the brush where I last saw her, and there she was. I flipped her over, and first observation was small hole in and out, and only a tiny ring of blood on the exit side. I walked back over to the second one, and sure enough, exactly the same scenario. I got my gutting kit out of my back pack and started with the first one... and it did not take long to figure out what happened. As soon as I got her open, blood and jelly came pouring out of her chest cavity. The heart and lungs were both literally pulp. Same on the other one.... When processing, I found the backs of both front shoulders were bruised and a 4" diameter bruise on the inside of the ribcage on the exit side. That explained everything. The hydrostatic shock did the heavy work. This little quarter bore doesn't get nearly the credit it deserves among hunters with their super ultra magnums... because now you don't have to work as hard, but I absolutely love hunting with the older lever guns and the even older cartridges. I took a doe last season with the 22 Savage Hi Power with very similar results. I've since acquired over a dozen of the Savages and have many more to go... This year, the 32-40 and 303 Savage are getting workouts. Thank you again for shedding light on a cartridge that I hope comes back to life. There was nothing wrong with it.

For those who care, you can easily convert 243 brass into 250 savage. Trimming is required which is no big deal. Rumor on the internet claims that 6.5 creedmoor brass into a 250 savage sizing die creates a damn near perfect case, I have yet to try it

The second is an 80 gn Barnes TTSX load that books in around 3220 fps. Both are ½ MOA and kill everything they are pointed at including black bear. I have never thought "I wish I had..."

Great video! My 1952 Savage 99EG 250-3000 will keep three shots under 1” at 100 yards using the Remington factory 100 grain loads. I don’t own a chronograph, but I have published reloading data that shows the 250 can push the 100 grain bullet to 3000 fps using RL15 tested in a model 99. Plenty good for point blank hold out to 250 yards. I also have two other 99’s. 1955 99F in 300 Savage and 1972 99F in 308 Winchester. All a joy to shoot. Whichever I have in my hand at the time is my favorite. I missed out on a Ruger 77 in 250 Savage a few years ago. Dang! Now I’m in the process of having an already nicely sporterized 1913 Kar 98 Mauser action that I got dirt cheap re-barreled in 257 Roberts. You should do a video on that cartridge. I hand load for everything. I’m coming up on 71 years old now and can’t hunt much because of health problems. I’ve been hand loading over fifty years. A lot of your younger viewers may not know that the 250-3000 is the parent cartridge of the 22-250 and the 300 Savage is the parent cartridge of the 308 Winchester. Savage made two bolt action rifles chambered in 250-3000 and 300 Savage. The model 1920 was introduced in 1920 and the Super Sporter in 1928. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

I killed my biggest buck here in SW Virginia, a fine 9pt with a 90 grain hollow point. It was running and at the shot (about 70 yards away) it fell at about 15 yards. Mine likes IMR 3031 powder. When my son was born I commissioned a gunsmith to build him a small ring 98 mauser with a Douglas 24" barrel in 250 Savage Ackley, it came out as an artwork of accuracy with 100 gr bullets unfortunately my boy had a brain tumor and recovered from his surgery as left handed and has never gotten to hunt with it but ol dad does... the only limiting factor keeping it from superseding the Creedmoor in every way is the 10 twist barrel, but deer inside of 500 yards can't tell a difference between a 115 gr and 140 grain bullet i promise

What an awesome and melancholy story. I love hearing of all the memories people have with their 250 Savage. I agree with your assessment on the 250 Savage vs the 6.5 CM. Most deer huntings can not intentionally hit a deer in the vitals at 300 yards, much less 500 so the 250 Savage is plenty sufficient. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a merry Christmas.

The 250 Savage is more in the class of 6mms, like the 243 than 6.5s like the Creed Moore. I believe the 250 Savage is superior as a hunting cartridge than the 6mms at normal hunting ranges. 6mms are a little better at ranges past 300yds because of higher ballistic coefficients of 6mm bullets. The 250 Savage is a more efficient cartridge with greater barrel life and a little more accurate with the same quality hunting bullets of the 6mms. As a varmit/deer cartridge, the 250 Savage is about as good as you can get. For more range and power , a modern loaded 257 Robert is out standing . I would classify it as a deer/varmint cartridge. More suited for deer than varmints. Just my opinion and sticking to it.

The gun sales and hunting industry in general has been bitten by the consumer spending bug. Marketing and promotions have convinced many hunters that until you spend $750 on camouflaged clothing, hundreds of dollars on trail cams, thousands on stands and equipment, $15,000 or more on an ATV, and a kings ransom on the newest and greatest metric designation caliber topped by a 4-25 power BDC scope there's no way that a deer will ever stop long enough to allow the best BC bullet enter its kill zone. In reality most hunter need to spend more time at the range practicing good marksmanship and exercising their bodies. Most whitetail deer and many mule deer are taken at ranges under 150 yds so any good rifle with a decent bullet will harvest any deer walking in North America.

@@jackofalltrades7822 Same to you. I've found out from 40 years of whitetail hunting that getting on my stand and sitting still will keep me hidden from most of the deer I encounter. As long as I have my silhouette broken up I can usually get deer to walk within gun range. I've hunted with guys who wear their denim barn coats and Carhartt overalls who never fail to get their deer annually.

My grandfather had an old Savage 99 in 250-3000, I actually loved that old rifle. It was a sweet deer gun. Too bad my uncle.got it when grand dad died. Not sure where it went when my uncle died. But, he had the same wcope you put on your manlicher stocked bolt action. Thanks for bringing up the memories. These days, I've been exploring PCP air rifles for deer hunting. With an Air Force Texan LSS45. I have no qualms about taking up to a 150 yard shot with it, it's relatively quiet, and will put a 350 grn pill thru the Texas deer quite effeciently.

*The problem with the .250 Savage is and always has been the .243 Winchester. Not to mention the 257 Roberts and the venerable 25-06. There's just no good reason to bother with the Savage.*
@jackofalltrades7822
@jackofalltrades7822 7 ай бұрын
The .243 came out 40 years after the 250 and gives you a measly 300 fps more. The .257 Roberts beats the Savage by maybe 100 fps which makes that discussion moot. The 25-06 recoil is significantly more and a little too aggressive for smaller shooters. The 250 failed because of the 87gr bullet used in the beginning. Charles Newton, the inventor of the 250 Savage and the 25-06, wanted a 100gr load but was overruled by the Savage executives. I will concede that the 243, 257 and 25-06 are ballistically superior but not enough to convince me to leave my 250 Savage in the safe. My .243 is hell on Coyotes. Thanks for the comment and for the view. Merry Christmas.

@@jackofalltrades7822 If you really want an AR 10 upper in 250 Savage let me know then we can work out exactly what you want. Due time to get the barrel from Pac Nor and finish time including testing mid-summer would be delivery time. I can't understand why no one does the 250 Savage in the AR 10? Look at all the other cartridges of the same size as the 250 Savage that are done on the AR 10. The AR 10 is done on the 22-250 - 243 - 6 mm Rem - 257 Roberts - the 6.5 Creedmoor -6.5x47 Lapua - 308 and I have 6 mm - 284 win and 6.5 - 284 Norma and any cartridge that fits into the AR 10 magazine works in the AR 10 even the WSM magnums. Jay at Pac Nor has been told I want a 25 cal - 1-10 twist rate 24-inch SS super match barrel. On my builds I use the 17 " gas tube to delay the bolt opening and on WSM magnums I use the 18-5 " gas tubes for the same reason to delay timing of bolt opening. Now if you want this finished AR 10 upper you can choose the number of groves from 3 - 4 and a R-5 rifling to 6 groove or Polygonal rifling. 250 Savage being the child of the 308 & 3006 means no changes to the AR bolt or AR 10 magazines. You could put the serious whooping on Coyotes with the AR 10 extended magazines and be a great deer gun using the 5 round mags.

He was a historian and a veteran of the Green Beret one of the things that we had in common was the love for vintage rifles and he collected three of the model 99 they were chambered in 300. 250-3000. And 22 high-power. The inheritance was divided three ways my choice and pick and I picked all of the model 99’s. There’s nothing new under the sun….there’s your scripture lesson for the day😊! All these ‘new’ cartridges are the reinvention of the wheel. It’s called marketing 101. Put the same product in a new box, add some tail fins, new perfume to the detergent and advertise it as ‘new and improved’! That’s the 6.5 creedless. That’s the 360 hum hammer and all the rest of these reincarnations of already existing cartridges…a case in point being the 250 savage….and the 6.5x55…the 351 Winchester…the 38-55/375 Winchester. The gun companies cook up a new form of an old round to boost sales. This rub that it’s about those states that require straight wall cases is BS. What happened to the 357 maximum? The 44 auto mag…if you want a rimless case? All these new cartridges duplicate older ones….its easier to push a new version than resurrect an old one. It’s all marketing.

I would say most people aren’t capable of making over a 3-400 yard shot. Everyone is turning into long range hunters. It’s not as ethical and I’ve seen a lot of wounded game that require more than one shot or found dead deer that people weren’t able to recover. I’m in South Dakota it’s a state that makes long range shots easy to take but not easy to succeed. I use a 7mm rem mag or 300 wby. And I refuse to shot game over 600 yards and try not to shot over 400. The problem I see today is people are getting lazy and don’t put effort into stalking and getting closer to their game. Yesterday my dad seen a group of guys shot a deer 7 times before they downed it.

Well said & I concur. Those lazy “long range hunters” are what gives the rest of us a bad name. I know my limits and 300 is as far as I am comfortable taking a shot at game, & that is if I have a good rest and not winded from walking or stalking. Thanks for the view and reaffirming comments.

My thinking exactly.... the super dupers only made lazy hunters. My shots, thankfully, are typically under 30 yards. Never injured an animal. Never missed an animal. Never lost an animal... and none has gone more than 25 feet, most less than 10 feet, and several DRT. I have many of the newer flavors of the day, but I love the older cartridges and hunt almost exclusively with the older ones. The only modern one I take out is the 308MXLR in 308 Marlin Express on the odd occasion I hunt power lines with one of my buddies.

You certainly could as the 22-250 used the 250 Savage as a parent cartridge, and on any Savage bolt action rifle rebarreling is not hard to do. You could really do it with any short action that has a bolt with a .473” face on it. 22-250, 243, 308, 7mm-08 all would be good candidates. Thanks for watching & happy new year.

I bought a savage 99 probably 10 years ago in win 30- 30, it was a made up gun from several other guns, but I got it for 250.00, , made in 1912 I believe, now here's the thing, because I reload and cast my own bullets, I dropped the velocity down to 2000 fps, and I'm able to load 20 rounds for about 2.50 a box, and I've probably have 400 rounds in a coffee can , is that enough to kill a deer, I'm thanking, it probably is, at least if I do my part, and hit where I aim ,people, will look at this round as being weak and probably inefficient, but people hunted for a very long time with black powder firearms, both muzzleloading and cartridge guns and killed a lot lf game, my point, is your point, new isn't always better
