Language learning is back for 2021! Join me in the 90 Days With Drops Challenge and kick-start your language learning for the year. I'll be "remastering" my Dutch this year (and eventually working on a new language, which I'll announce in a few weeks). What will you learn?
I believe there are the three things that allow for rapid and effective language learning. Where do apps fit in the mix? Specifically, the Drops app, which I've used extensively to learn languages.

For learning vocabulary.... i just watch A LOT of series for example in netflix with the original audio for example english (i'm from Argentina) and the subtitles english, and then my mind starts to get used to different words and then i write it down and look for their meaning and create some example for every word like "steal": they're gonna steal the bank. So since i already have an idea of the other words' meaning, i can imagine what "steal" means and makes it very difficult for me to forget the words. And also listen a lot of music in my target languages, and watch youtubers in those languages talking about stuff that interests me like pyschology or linguistics and like i said... it's like my mind gets used to the grammar structure, etc and makes it very difficult for me to forget the "new" words. I HOPE I CAN WIN BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE MONEY :"(

This happened about 10 years ago. I've just got hired in a French company, where basically everyone spoke French or was French (but me, who had zero experience with the language). I went out to celebrate and ended up in a flat of a friend who studied linguistics and had plenty of dictionaries on her shelf. I picked up French picture dictionary, opened it at a random page and asked: "Teach me to say THIS". The phrase was "l'anatomie du serpent venimeux" (the anatomy of a venomous snake), and we spent the next 20 minutes or so by making sure I absolutely nail the pronunciation. For the next few days, I'd make sure I pronounce it correctly every time meeting her. While I didn't learn too much of French since, I did get to meet a lot of French people. Whenever they would ask me if I know French, I'd say "I don't. Well... I know this one phrase...". Just seeing the look on their faces when they hear me saying the sentence with the perfect accent made that little bit of time totally worth it :) It was a great ice breaker and led to plenty of jokes :)

You are so right. Fluency never ends. I have been living in Germany for three years now and my German is at C1 level and I thought I had reached the highest possible level of fluency. Yesterday, I met two german girls in the train and they were speaking so fast that I had a hard time understanding what they were saying. This reminded me of my early days of learning german haha.

I was learning Arabic. I asked how to say small basic phrases. I'd write them down to practice, and when i was around that person i would use the words or phrases i learned instead of saying them in English. Unfortunately i was working construction, so when the job is over we move on. I was learning Italian on Dualingo, but i had a bunch of other things i took on and got rid of the app when i got a new phone. This is motivating to learn again. I've always wanted to learn German or Russian. Thank you for the video, happy New Year 😁🙌🙌

Leuk dat je Nederlands wil kunnen spreken met je moeder! Ik heb Drops vaak voorbij zien komen, maar het nooit gedownload omdat de app er erg simpel uit zag. Nu ik het heb uitgeprobeerd zie ik dat het erg handig is om nieuwe woorden te leren aan de hand van afbeeldingen. Succes met het verder leren van Nederlands dit jaar Nelson :)

I'm trying to learn Bahasa Malay and i would put the words into creative pictures and use them into sentences cause it helps me remember how they are used. If I understand how the word is used and it's meaning, making a goofy picture out of it is easier. It also helps weirdly to hear how other pronounce it cause their accents differ and it helps me associate the words better

Hey, I'm Janek, the most interesting way I learned the vocabulary was after the rehearsal for my theater play, I ran to my afternoon Spanish lesson and I had to think of an excuse for being late, I had no idea how to justify myself in Spanish, so I entered the translator the word "perform". My statement was as follows: Lo siento, llegué tarde, ACTUÓ en una obra de teatro y tuve un ensayo de obra. An amazing situation HAPPENED after on of the performances, because it turned out that there was a Spanish couple in the audience, after the show they came to me and started congratulating me in mixed English, which I replied with a smile on my face: Gracias fue un placer ACTUAR para ti :)))) Because of this situation I will remember this word (ACTUAR) till the end of my life😊

I'm currently learning some Hebrew and using an app for learning to read and write the language. That said, I started with picking up words to build a basic vocabulary. I use imagery with the transliterated word in English... favorite example is "nasa" (נשא) which is to "lift away" or carry; pretty obvious: a 'nasa' ship lifting off. Craziest, though, is a blend of my tech side where I remember "righteousness" as "tsed·ä·kä" (צְדָקָה) as I'm editing / setting via "sed" (streamline editor tool) "a kaw" (sound of a crow) for a crow that wasn't sounding right. Staying memorable has to be weird sometimes... and personable.

Knowing vocab is often overlooked I think especially by those scarred by traditional classroom learning...but the truth is, as you said, it helps! Even with languages that I've put aside for months or even years, I'm always amazed at the amount of vocab words I'm able to remember when I decide to pick the language back up. If you really drill those words in your brain, it's hard to forget them and that knowledge lasts longer than you think!

I was memorising the word 涙 in Japanese for “tear” (as in from crying). It is pronounced as namida. The first thing that came to my mind was the song that I have no idea when I first heard Feliz Navidad because it sounded similar. So I sang the phrase Feliz Namida in the same tune while making a crying action. Something new that I tried out but I guess it worked really well because that was months ago but I still remember it now haha.

When I was a kid, I couldn't remember the English word stale. Polish is my mother tongue so I came up with a sentence Stale jem czerstwy chleb - I eat stale bread all the time. It was approx 20 years ago. Whenever I see my English teacher, she reminds me of this sentence. It's one of the English words I've never forgotten since then. In French I couldn't remember a droite and a gauche - on the right and on the left. In Polish it's - a droite - po prawej, a gauche - po lewej. P is like the mirrored and reversed d so I remember that a droite is on the right so the other one has to be on the left.

Hi Nelson, I think a good way to learn a new word is to carry a new item with you over a day everywhere you go and take it out whenever you're sitting down or standstill and just hold it, look at it and/or show it to someone you're speaking to. For example in learning Dutch I took "sleutels" with me and whilst driving I forced myself to drive "slower" than normal because sleutels is pronounced "slo-tols". Furthermore throughout the day I kept them in my pocket and their jingle was also a reminder. This can be done with many items to start.

I bet you're learning French. Am I right? As for learning languages, I always struggle with memorising the grammatical gender of a noun. Especially because a same word or notion may have different genders in different languages. So I put up a simple and effective mnemonic: I associate colours (red/blue/green) and forms (square/circle/triangle) to noun genders. It works for me. I'm happy to share if this can help anyone else.

I don't know if you're sponsored by Drops. For anyone learning Mandarin I suggest Pleco (I'm not sponsored), and to stay away from Duolingo. By the way, I truly appreciate your channel! For what it's worth (I'm pretty fluent in 7 languages) I find it counter productive to just memorise vocabulary without learning new words in the context of sentences. Flash card apps have a place in this world, of course, but they can't stand alone. I frequently teach English, German and Danish, and I have a good idea of how most (not all, mind you) people best acquire a new language.

I have just started to learn German (1) because I have German ancestry (2) it’s a challenge. Anyway German is known for having very long words . For example sorry / excuse me in German is : entschuldigung - I really struggled with this but after hearing the pronunciation - it gave me the clue to break the word down - and also give it a story and a context in one . So to remember this word Entschuldigung - I imagine ENTering or barging through a door with my Shoulder gun (SCH) (GUNg) - ( gun is on my shoulder like a sci-fi gun ) - and as I barge through the door I bang into an innocent bystander - so I say sorry to them or entschuldigung
@NMalteC
@NMalteC 3 жыл бұрын
Here's another way to learn that word: schuldig means guilty. Ent as a prefix means something like to remove. So, remove my guilt, or simply Entschuldigung! In my experience the best way to learn a new word is to understand its core meaning, does it originate in Old Norse, German, Greek, etc.? German likes to create new words by combining existing words. That's also how Chinese works. English likes to invent a new word or to derive it from another language. Fremd: foreign, Hass: hatred. Fremdenhass: xenophobia, not hate of things foreign. In many ways English is overly complicated.
