Have you heard of Spontaneous Sobriety? It’s a strange-sounding phrase, but an intriguing phenomenon.
In short, it means recovering from alcohol use without any formal treatment.
It has to do with resolving your internal conflict that battles between your desire to change your relationship with alcohol and your fear of missing out.
But there’s a bit more to it than that, and some steps to take to get there.
PLUS your official invitation to This Naked Mind Intensive - join me at nakedmindcourse.com.

I did this. I didn't know I shouldn't have. I was crying, I was so sick, I asked God to help me. And clear as a bell, God said, if you don't put it to your lips, I will do the rest. Let Me help you. It was so clear! So I just stopped drinking. From a fifth and sometimes more, to nothing! Just like that. And its been 5 years. I didn't have DTs, nothing. Just didn't buy anymore and didn't need anymore. I guess I should have died.

This is all true, I am 30 now and since about 27 I have been seriously trying to quit drinking. I have had a lot of success, and the times I have relapsed only made me look deeper into myself and fix internal issues. I got therapy for my depression, addressed my diet and fitness., and I have gradually felt better and better. Right now I am 3 months sober with one slip up within the first 30 days. If I did the math the last 3 years I have had way more sober days than not, and that's a far cry from the 4 day a week binge drinker I was in my mid 20's.

Your honesty is what I think we all find so endearing but your relatability factor is downright SPOOKY - right down the husband who flatly said he was never going to not drink - yet here we both are! I learned long ago I was never going to force anything on my husband but he watched me return to my high energy, happy person and he wanted that, too. Thanks for all the good work you have shared with the us.

Hi, I am Wayne and I’m a grateful recovering alcoholic. I just finished with this video and I found it intriguing! The concept of being able to let an addiction run it’s course is very attractive. I drank practically daily and in dangerous levels for 23 years, I went to rehab, and I attempted several times to stop on my own. I finally had to hit my “bottom” to figure out that alcohol was no longer going to be able to pacify me and let me keep getting away from myself! I had to begin dealing with feelings, emotions, and gain the nerve to examine the things that led me to the bottle in the first place. For me, I am certain that I would’ve killed my self if I didn’t stop... I’m now 4.5 years living sober! I personally, know that if I ever drank alcohol again the results would be the same...So for me, abstinence and working my program is how I stay this way. I do respect the fact that my way is not the only way and I remain open minded to strategies and methods that others have used, and have found the same success! Spontaneous sobriety is indeed something I will study a bit more. I thank your insight and education on the topic.

I think this is where I am at. I have been a heavy drinker for many years. I finally got some feedback that this is harming my health. Routine blood tests revealed that my liver function is out of range, by a factor of 3. I will fix this, whatever it takes. This is a spontaneous decision.

@@ThisNakedMind Thank you so much. I am doing well. I allow myself to drink two days a week only, Liver function tests are normal again. Had they not been normal, I would have stopped completely. I will not blow up my liver. On an off day I sometimes think it would be nice to have a beer or whatever but I don't. I guess I was, or am, a heavy habitual drinker as opposed to addicted.

My biggest problem with AA was having to identify myself as an alcoholic. That really turned me off and also being expected to sit around and talk about what a terrible person I am. Whenever I mentioned that to other AA members I was cut off.

Traditional rehab has an 11% success rate. Read that again, 11%. Trust me I know, I have been four times. $20K for the first two because after the first stay, I relapsed five days after I left. They will tell you IN THE REHAB with your littermates there, that out of all of you (about 20) about 3 will remain sober.

I have muscular dystrophy and don’t have many leg muscles. I cannot get up by myself. What’s you advice for people with severe disabilities PLUS alcohol issues?? I’m already down. Stopping alcohol is going to put me down further no matter how temporary. And I HAVE to quit completely. I’m 46 and there is no controlling this less than drinking 2 times a week, and thats not working either. ❤

I would say to explore different options to see what is a good fit for you in particular. I believe it depends on the individual. For me, AA is a bad fit. I find the beliefs systems faulty, social coersion unappealing, and the focus on being unwell toxic. I prefer to assess my alcohol intake (very limited these days), part of a holistic approach, similar to refining my diet. Best of luck-
