In 101 Dalmatians, they wouldn't have any financial problems if they didn't live in a giant house/mini-mansion in the city, and employ what appears to be a full-time, live-in housekeeper. They're poor by rich people standards, but realistically they're probably doing just fine.

THANK YOU!, yes they said that the puppies will be an expense but they are clearly well off enough to afford a full time housekeeper- and Secondly we never find out the source of Cruella's Wealth, I always thought it was a family thing, with Cruella and Anita being from rich families, so that is how Roger and Anita are scraping by at the moment and Cruella's attitude fits a spoiled aristocrat who expects to get everything she wants- It fits her attitude better than if she was a self made woman, who would likely found a better way to get the dogs and arrange the whole thing
@annana6098
@annana6098 5 жыл бұрын
@@timothycarney9652 I always assumed Cruella came from old money because of her dark, mostly abandoned mansion (Hell Hall was it?) where Horace and Jasper keep the puppies. If she were self made and bought her own house, and is Anita's age, she'd likely be living in her own house. It's the family house, she's abandoned it and lives in the city most likely. One of the characters says "no one has lived there in years." I base this entirely on the animated feature, of course. Edit: her parents are likely dead, or else that's still be living there, she inherited early and probably blew a bunch of the money on drugs and plastic surgery and that's why she looks a thousand years old.

They didn't even have electricity so what if it's a giant home? I doubt it was taxed by square inch, and kicking the old housekeeper out (who was surely very low-wage) just to keep some puppies is stupid.

Think about it like everyone knows he buys stuff from the internet and while all we see him buy is ACME stuff that doesn't mean he doesn't order food, hell he's bought TONS of Roadruner food to distract that bird so my best guess is he either keeps trying to catch him to prove himself as capable of catching what's supposed to be his food-chain established prey; or alternativelly it's because he knows that eating the guy will be the most delicious thing ever, like if someone ran into a golden eggs goose they'd most likely chase it for god knows how long same thing here.

Bugs Bunny is *smarter* and able to outwit the people who wanna kill him 'cause of who he is. That's why Elmer Fudd is the go-to foil. He wants to kill Bugs 'just 'cause he's a rabbit, and it's rabbit season. Bugs gets away from stronger and deadlier enemies by use of his wits, and he keeps a sense of humor. I am totally cool with that message. (Oh, and good stepmoms who things work out for? Carol Brady.)

6:43 The Hunger Games is a bad example. Katniss won in the first book because she was literally playing a home game. The layout of the arena was similar to her own life experiences. Factor in that she'd been training for YEARS with her bow and even if she didn't have her MC powers, she would have done exceptionally well. IRL you don't bash a team for performing well on their home field/court/ice/etc., it's expected that they defend their house. As such, the moment that it was decided that the arena was to be a forest like environment, Katniss was all but guaranteed to have a stronger showing than her District was known for. When you have favorable odds (no pun intended), it makes sense that you'd win because it then becomes a matter of math. Last I checked, math was brutally honest and fair. Soren raises a good point, but the evidence he used to defend said point was pretty weak.
@CrystalWilliamsBrownArt
@CrystalWilliamsBrownArt 8 жыл бұрын
But she still needed help from sponsors and the help she got was because of Peeta and Haymitch for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I like Katniss but she was helped out a lot by other people. Peeta even kept the "Careers" off her scent for as long as he could. Still I will say she worked hard to keep her family alive and that paid off with the skills she needed for the arena.
@seanblack1320
@seanblack1320 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah but there's a difference between training to be a good hunter, which is probably done in the few hours in between helping her impoverished family, and training specifically for the Hunger Games' survival challenges like the careers did. Remember, Katniss only trained to hunt small animals and deer. The careers specifically trained to kill people, which is an entirely different ball game as you can ask any soldier or police officer forced to take a life while on duty.
@henwich
@henwich 7 жыл бұрын
But that only reinforces the point that she wasn't some "chosen one" who was magically gifted. In fact, the support Katniss gets from other people is a huge theme of the books/movies. That's the point--she can't do everything she does by herself. If she was doing it alone, she'd have died. She needs the help of others. Everything she gets she either worked her ass off for (her skill with a bow) gets from the help of people who care about her, or gets because someone she helped/did something kind for/inspired wants to help her back.
@silentlamb21
@silentlamb21 7 жыл бұрын
The "chosen one" doesn't have to be magically gifted. The trophe is also fulfilled if the person has to work for it. Its more about the protagonist being that one person that seems to be necessary to set all the important things in motion, like how Neo is the "chosen one" in the matrix. Its not like he doesn't do anything like Harry Potter in the first HP movie.
@reddbull77
@reddbull77 7 жыл бұрын
Jay Smith I see your point .... but she was not the favorite to win and did not have that big of an advantage..... you have to remember other districts broke the rules and would have their "tributes" raised to enter the Games, they literally trained their whole life to fight, use multiple weapons and survival skills and were treated like heroes in their District for doing it......in fact she was a malnourished girl who could only use one weapon and track , they even had a sene that pointed out that her survival heavily counted on a Bow being in the Cornucopia at the start of the games. So they were concerned she could or would not survive if the Bow was not there.

Most of the early disney movies were based on fairy tales which were written hundreds of years ago. In those days Step mothers were actually a little dangerous because the kids in the first marriage were set to inherit everything and any of her kids would inherit nothing unless the other kids were out of the way. Not the case in every story but in a good bit of them before they were censored. Enchanted is the best example of reconciling old disney representations with new world struggles. Yes the villain is a Stepmom with really sketch intentions and some weird tongue spasm problem but at the end of the movie Giselle, the protagonist, marries and becomes a Stepmom herself. A movie where everything works out for the stepmom, just not the villain stepmom.

But the location of his home was prime realestate, it's walking distance of a park, and look at their furniture! Grandfather clocks, wall paneling, curtains, and a fireplace mantel? That doesn't look like a lower middle class house. I don't think Roger was even a failing composer, he was just suffering from a writers block which is common for any composer in the musical career. Can't go with you on Bugs bunny. Bugs Bunny especially, but the Looney Tunes heroes to some degree are trickster heroes. Tricksters win by outsmarting or tricking their opponent, not by being the best. Odysseus didn't out muscle the Cyclops. Anansi didn't out-roar the lion, Puss-in-Boots didn't out-magic the Giant/Troll/Whatever. They out-clever their marks who is set up to have a clear advantage. So the Wile E. is a super genius, Yosemite Sam is the rooting-tooting-nest, the trickster can outsmart them. And for kids who often feel powerless compared to adults or older kids, knowing there is someone out there who defeat them and make you laugh at the same time is a good thing.

+Rahsaan Footman Bugs Bunny did end up playing the fool in two cartoons. One where he got duped multiple times by a gremlin, the other where he challenged a Tortoise to a race and, despite actually running his ass off, the Tortoise still won, exactly like the title said. (But in the Gremlin's case it was because Bugs didn't believe in him for half the cartoon, allowing the creature to do whatever he wanted until Bugs wised up, which was unfortunately too late, and in the Tortoise's case the Tortoise had identical siblings who helped win the race for him. Bugs legitimately beat the Tortoise he challenged at the beginning but the Tortoise still won because his 5th brother was at a checkpoint near the finish line and crossed it just as Bugs outran the 4th brother.)

@brycejohansen7114 8 жыл бұрын
+Rahsaan Footman I would also like to add that at the beginning of most Bugs Bunny cartoons, he isn't trying to outwit anyone. He's simply going along his own business. It's usually someone else trying to start a fight with him which causes him to act. In a way, Bugs Bunny is acting in a sort of 'poetic justice' type of way towards these characters because they were gunning for him in the first place.

While I can agree that LT characters like the Road Runner, Speedy and Tweety win by "dumb luck", Bugs doesn't. He does work for his win. Most of the time he's watching his foes. He's showing the importance of being patient and observant. (good lessons for kids) He tries to hide it by acting nonchalant or unresponsive which demonstrates a clever mind. Bugs understands people. He wins because he does think with a level head. Is Bugs always a nice guy? Hardly! But he does win because of skill not dumb luck.

Rohld Dhal teaches kids that if you have any flaws at all ( weight, ugliness, or gum chewing) you are a horrible person and deserve to be turned into a giant blueberry, strawberry fudge or have your farm go out of business. +Definitely Catherine At least in Chocolate factory the kids weren't really being punished for their specific flaws, they were punished for their poor impulse control and their parents by extension punished for their poor parenting. Many of Dhal's books contain poor parenting. It just happens it is easier to convey a bad guy if you give them unattractive flaws in addition to being bad. And of course a writer would consider reading to be an attractive trait.

Looney toons don't need to show the winner working hard cause you, in your life, only see your own hard work, while you look at other people, you see only the finished product, not the work behind it. but while it feels like, you worked hard and lost against someone who are just naturally better, doesn't mean you can't keep working, losing isn't the end. it's easy to over analyse a silly kids show to find a ''bad lesson'' and such, but you can do the opposite too.

It teaches kids not to give up, but to look at it a different way. Hey maybe you suck at a sport, but after all you prepared you can prepare others and become a rich, celebrated coach! Just like Mike is not scary, but his training allows him to understand how sully can be more effective in his own scaring work and work together as a team. And he is happy because he is at the top of his game! Don`t tell kids they can do whatever they want, maybe they can`t, but there is always something you overlook when you are too focus on a goal that is not meant to be.

step mothers used to be a legitimate threat to children. Bio/Real mom dies of complications from child birth or some disease while the kid (s) are young. Dad remarried because someone has to keep house while he earns an income. Stepmom might love the existing kids. Or, equally likely, she could view them as a threat to the inheritance of any children she might contribute to the family. Stepmothers offing their stepkids was not an inconceivable circumstance at the time that many fairytales were written.

If I remember correctly, in the original versions of fairy tales, it was originally mothers, not step-mothers, who were the villains. At some point, centuries before Disney, it was seen as too cruel to kids to make them fear their mothers, and the mothers were changed to step-mothers.

Roger's success wasn't blind luck - he is very clearly shown throughout the movie to be working diligently on his music - and they may be 'poor' by Cruella's (and apparently Soren's) standards, but to own a two story house with a live-in maid, I think they can afford some extra kibble. Plus, when they get the 99 dogs they make a financially responsible plan: use the hard-earned money from the success of the song to buy a place in the country where they can breed and sell dalmatian dogs.

You're dead-on accurate that Cruella shot herself in the foot by stealing those puppies, and more patience on her part would've paid off---for exactly the reasons you've cited. The entirety of Looney Tunes is almost completely based on irony. That is what's special about it. Hunters hunt and kill rabbits. What about a scenario where the rabbit/bunny wins and outsmarts a hunter? Cats catch, kill, and eat birds. What about a scenario where a cat repeatedly fails to properly do any of those things? Coyotes run down, kill, and eat desert animals. What about a scenario where a coyote goes above and beyond what's necessary to catch a roadrunner and still fails? It's all just a parody of natural life.

To paraphrase something Chuck Jones once said, we all want to be Bugs Bunny, but at the end of the day most of us are Daffy Duck. We all want to be the guy who always comes out on top, but more often we're the people who pour our hearts and souls into our dreams and never win because life is cruel and hard as nails. The Looney Tunes cartoons are more or less an allegory of how life really is. The people who strive to succeed often don't and the people who do succeed are usually just insanely lucky smucks who get happiness handed to them on a silver platter. This is also why I love that one scene from "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" where Daffy says to Bugs, "All you have to do is much on a carrot, and people love you." as opposed to Daffy who always gets the shaft no matter how hard he tries.

Roger just had a hit with "Cruella DeVil," it was playing on the radio in the final scene, and they'd likely have another one with "Dalmatian Plantation." Basic point, Roger's now successful, they'll have enough to live contentedly, and (even though I can't prove this) I always got the feeling Anita worked.

Yeah? She still wanted fur coats. I don't care, the ends justify the means, the means DON'T justify the ends. She still wanted to make fur coats out of domestic animals. Even if she had ONE female dalmation, that dalmation couldn't feed that many pups.

+Sebastian Ferguson But they still have a live-in house maid. That implies they've got to be somewhat wealthy. Maybe Roger was a poor failed songwriter when he was a bachelor, and started to see the success of his work around the time he got married. If Roger and Anita can barely afford to put food on the table, how can they possibly afford to hire a maid?

Can we really feel sorry for characters like Wile or Sylvester since they are trying to kill and eat their respective birdy foes? I know it's in the nature of coyotes and cats to hunt but it's also in the nature of prey to evade getting eaten. You can't be pissy if your dinner evades you. It's survival of the fittest. That's the law of the jungle.

umm no harry potter teaches kids that you might be the one but it comes at a cost . Harry had his parents taken away from him. He didn't have a good childhood and he was supposedly killed a guy as a baby. I don't care how evil Voldemort is Harry must have felt some guilt for killing someone even if he didn't remember. After being called a freak all those years he finds the place where he belonhs only to be told he killed someone then realize that they weren't actually dead and were out to kill him then he has to actually kill Voldemort while still being in school. Dumbledore isn't much help either he didn't tell Harry the things he need to know. He just left Harry and hoped he didn't die. He watched the people he cared about get murdered and he was constantly under attack by the ministry and the students of Hogwarts. His first best friend left him when he need it. While a lot of people in the wizarding world look at Harry as this hero Harry was scared and alone with a shady best friend and a not so perfect life.

This, and also: Though the movies skip over it, the Harry Potter books at least have a whole part wherein Dumbledore specifically emphasizes to Harry that he should not put too much weight into the whole prophecy/"chosen one" one thing as if it was inherently predetermined fate. Dumbledore explains that, if the prophecy had been made with nobody around to hear it, none of it would have come to pass. It only came to pass because Voldemort *did* take it as fate and acted upon it, and because his acting upon it changed Harry's life in such a way that he *would* become the one with the particular connection and ability to defeat him. Not by some extraordinary magical ability or divine rite saying "you're the one to defeat him", but because Harry would never WANT to stop fighting against the man who robbed him of the loving family he'd had! To quote the book, since JK Rowling puts it way more eloquently than I could paraphrase it: " 'But sir, it all comes down to the same thing, doesn't it? I've got to try and kill him, or--' 'Got to?' said Dumbledore. 'Of course you've got to! But not because of the prophecy! Because you, yourself, will never rest until you've tried! Imagine, please, just for a moment, that you had never heard that prophecy! How would you feel about Voldemort now? Think!' Harry watched Dumbledore striding up and down in front of him, and thought. He thought of his mother, his father, and Sirius. He thought of Cedric Diggory. He thought of all the terrible deeds he knew Lord Voldemort had done. A flame seemed to leap inside his chest, searing his throat. 'I'd want to see him finished,' Harry said quietly, 'and I'd want to do it.' " Point being: it was only because Voldemort had MADE that prophecy have so much meaning to Harry that it came true. And it was only because of the person Harry already *was* - good and pure of heart and willing to give his life if it meant saving others from the pain Voldemort had given him- that made him the one who could defeat him. So the message to kids really isn't "you're a special snowflake" at all (and, yes, if you ARE, it probably does come at a cost). Instead, it's much more about every person's ability to make their own choices about how to face the obstacles and injustices they see in life. That you can either look at the injustices you see in the world and choose to turn your back on fighting for a change, or you can be like Harry and CHOOSE to take it as your responsibility to stand in resistance even when it's the hard and scary thing to do.

i don't think he feels guilty for the guy who killed his parents dying because of his mothers love protecting him enough for it to back fire and kill voldemort. i think he just didn't want to be seen as famous cause he wasn't in on that.

Maybe the looney toons lesson is not that working hard gets you nowhere. But maybe that you can work as hard as you can for all of your life, but if your not working for the right thing, you won't come out victorious. ie, Wiley Coyote working to capture Road Runner. He probably wants to kill him, or keep him captive and torture him. That's an Inhumane thing and thus doesn't deserve to be rewarded.

Blame the Grimms (As in Grimm's Fairy Tales) for the Step-mom trope. In many of the fairy tales they collected it was the mother, like the woman who birthed these children, who are evil. In older versions of Hansel and Gretel it was their mother who convinced their father to lead them to starve in the woods. That was too dark for the early 19th century so they changed it to a step-mother. Jump ahead 100 years and Disney, who loved fairy tales, continues this trope by adapting his favorite fairy tales for animation.
