The port is not necessarily the primary issue, it’s more the Omni directional waves from about 200hz and down that become reinforced due to close proximity to walls, a lot of the time this has a negative effect on the accuracy of the sound so yes a minimum of 3ft from the front baffle to any wall should be the minimum if you want a clean sound

@JoelHernandez-tz3vk Ай бұрын
And I assume that despite becoming omnidirectional at 200Hz already, 200Hz is still far too high of a crossover frequency for a subwoofer.
@njrumenos
@njrumenos Ай бұрын
@@JoelHernandez-tz3vk yes correct, localised bass begins around 150hz from what I have found, probably why LFE goes to 120hz and the preferred crossover to a sub to be around 80hz, even sealed subs will encounter boundary interference when set close to walls sometimes it’s good sometimes it can be bad but most of the time we are able to EQ the boundary gain out, speakers are a bit different as the interference is close to midrange and other high bass notes that can be smeared from boundary gain interference. It’s not specifically related to ports it really goes for any speaker and sub ported or sealed or OB. In walls are particularly more localised up around 200hz as the waves can’t wrap around the speaker they in fact begin to light up the walls

@njrumenos Makes me wonder if ideally you'd have not just dedicated subwoofers but also dedicated mid-bass speakers as well, since I can only assume all of these have different ideal places. Which probably also means it'd be a 4-way system. With 3 different types of speakers.
@njrumenos

@@JoelHernandez-tz3vk unfortunately a lot of dialogue is in the mid to upper bass so it won’t work as they need to be somewhat aligned with the midrange drivers, there are other feasible solutions to getting smooth frequency response down to 80hz

Best rule for midrange and mid bass.. but lower than the schroader frequency of the room .. it's more about the nodes of the room. There are simulation webpages to calculate where the lowest waves are going to cause issues.

My front baffles are 44 inches now - Arendal 1723 THX. 2 ports open. It's a small room so there are other issues. ..but it's as good as I can get it for now.

I have a pair of Polk R 200s and a pair of Focal chorus 807v. The 200s having a rear port and the 807V with a front port. I enjoy the Polks so much more than the Focals. The Focals have a 7 inch woofer hardly put out any bass. I just like the warmth of the bass on the Polks. The Polks are so much better for the type of music i listen to. Mostly Rock. But i think the Focals do better for electronic music like Depeche mode and stuff like that. I have a small room so i definitely pull them out 2.5 to 3 feet and i run just one sub a bit back but a foot off the ground and the bass is tight instead of being to thic for my tastes.

I have a 7 ft rule in my space the accurate rule depends on your room but the 3 1\4 rule is the one to follow if possible divide your room into 1/3 from front to back side to side for the best speaker placement

I have 4 subs of which 3 are in a corner (the 4th has a open space to the right) I pulled the other 3 away from the wall behind and to the right and left (front subs) and I have to say, I hear a difference. I also am going to put up another 2 pair of acoustic panels. Thanks for that little tidbit of info!

Why do some speakers have ports at the back. When they are so difficult to place in a room . Why not just make all speakers with a port at the front

Is it 3 ft from the speaker baffle (front of speaker) or the back of the speaker? I'm assuming it's the front but it seems like a better rule of thumb would be a certain distance for the port to be from the wall behind it. I have SVS Ultra Towers that are tapered so interpretation of the 3 ft rule could mean quite a difference.

From the back. Means less or more if you don't have ports on the back or bottom

14 inches from the wall works well in my house with plaster walls and an 8 foot ceiling. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a rear ported speaker or front ported speaker. Seems to be 14 inches with every speaker I have tried. Port plug’s will make your speakers sound like 💩

I'm running the 12 foot rule for speakers and my subs cones are at ear level as well. Off that nasty sounding floor. But yeah, speakers up near a wall? Gross!

In a small room what you want to do is pull it 4 inches if the port is 4 inches. As long as you have that space your good. In a small room. If you can have the speakers 2 ft or 3ft from the side walls. If possible. From the front wall 1/3 from the side walls 1/4. That will help with the room mode kinda ! Small rooms always is hard to deal with but always manage of what you got. My bedroom is 9×11×8ft ceiling. I have my 2.5 ft from the front of the speaker not the back of the speaker. From the front wall. And 3ft from the sidewall. The bass is great. I don't use a subwoofer because the room mode takes care of the lows in a small room greatly. For me anyway. Don't measure from the back of the speaker. Always the front baffle of the speaker that's what your measuring which is the speaker acustics.

@@mzaentertainment5618 that's good indeed. For your set up I'd go close to the wall indeed for that. I also had that too but I down graded to a 3.0 as my other speakers blew lol 😂. But this is good enough. Make sure your subwoofers are close together or one in the front wall and behind you or beside you for the null.

@@chiefnations In the meantime, i will try to reduce the echo with a room treatment. What u mean by port size? Speaker size or the hole at the speaker?
@chiefnations
@chiefnations Ай бұрын
@@mzaentertainment5618 port size. Like for instants my is a 4 inch port so I keep it from the front wall 4 inches. My are facing straight not directional because my set of speakers are best when facing straight forward. Also my center speaker it is 2.5ft from the front wall also. Sounds great when all L.C.R speakers are in phase. With the treatment just the front and rear wall. Is best for a small room trust me I tried all ways for treatment and for best is just front and rear wall.
