Don’t be thinking being the gray man is the best way to go. It’s one option and sometimes the better option. Sometimes it’s better to project power, showing people that you are able and ready to bring the fight. It’s important for you to be able to identify those times.

*Yes, it is a balance. Although the primary objective of the Grayman theory is not to even come in to the consciousness of a would-be threat (assailant/LEO) in the first place, "Projecting strength" may be more effective when there is little or no crowd to blend in with OR when the potential threat is not a crowd, because a mob mentality stretches beyond reason & any projection of strength may be lost.* *Ultimately, the smartest S.O.P. is Grayman should be the first effort, then evasion (which truly is a whole other skill for another discussion), finally projecting strength/power as a last resort. Then again, not everyone is smart & common sense is no longer common practice.* *Liberty = Peace & I pray you all always enjoy both!*

@@SuperUncleRyan interesting seeing this take from the other perspective. I’m all about being the grey man and being inconspicuous/unassuming. I feel it’s my only/best option, being 5’4” 130 or so lbs. Athletically I’m pretty fast, but it’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses. Going up against shrek wouldn’t be my first choice. 😂 I prefer being unassuming on the daily because I’m able to do things and make my moves with no one really even giving it any thought. Nothing to see here people. But, there’s pros and cons to everything of course.

There was this man driving by as I was walking, and he slowed right down as he stared at me, to the point where he was barely rolling forwards. I tried keeping my head down trying to shrink & become invisible, but I think he picked up on it as though I was weak and shy so he continued even more to drive slowly and stare. So I had to change my tactic to the opposite. I stood up taller and looked straight at him in an aggressive manner.. and he quickly looked away and drove away immediately. Different approaches work for different types of people.

I've lived in some neighborhoods where you can get killed just walking down the street. The first thing you learn is how to walk. Quickly with purpose and try not to make eye contact. Nine times out of ten, eye contact is an invitation for some kind of hustle or confrontation. When strangers approach you, you never stop walking. You keep your eyes forward, say "NOT INTERESTED" and keep moving.

Another factor to consider is one's body posture. As you said in the video, it's become common to see people out in public hunched over their phones. A side effect of this and sit-down work is poor posture; pelvic tilt, rounded shoulders and a forward neck position. Just simply being someone who stands upright in a healthy, natural position is sadly enough to make you stand out in our society, as is being physically fit. Just something to think about.

I’m a retired LEO. I spent years as anti gray man and some as gray man. In an argument for each I think context, purpose, and location play a part. I remember once hearing an instructor say “If you don’t want to get eaten don’t look like food”. This is true of people by themselves, especially women. If you’re walking with your head buried in your phone oblivious to what’s going on around you, you’re easy pickings. But if you’re using situational awareness, walking with a purposeful stride, and making eye contact, the bad guy will likely search for an easier target. I think anti gray man is for normal times. But if you’re trying to hide in plain sight in a time of unrest, gray man is the way to go. Remember the first Police Academy movie when during the riot the police officer put on a sport coat and walked right by the rioters? Well probably most of y’all weren’t born. Stay alert, stay safe.

When to go gray: (1) When you are doing something you don't want to be questioned about, possibly to preserve opsec, because your actions might be of questionable legality (moving a self defense item to or from an urban workplace), you are finding out if your wife has a boyfriend, etc. (2) When things are getting tense, but are not yet at a crisis point, and you want to remove yourself form an area before serious things begin to happen. Consider an event happening that is just building towards a "peaceful protest" - you want to move through the area without being targeted by the early groups within the mob. (3) When things are happening and the area is being locked down by authority systems and you want to move through without being stopped (no one wants to try to explain their EDC to an officer when there was a terrorist attack two blocks away that you are having to skirt around). (4) When you are moving through dangerous territory (you may drive through some shady areas on your daily commute which, if having to hoof it to your suburban home would put you places you would not normally choose to be, especially in a crisis). Gray isn't about avoiding Joe Blow's notice - he is irrelevant. It is about avoiding the notice of predators, mobs looking for targets, and officers who might detain you. The hardest part of being gray, however, is concealing gear. Bags, meaningful firearms, body armor - these are things that are difficult to conceal. Finding ways to make those things vanish is always going to have issues of control (briefcase is easier to steal than a backpack and holds less), fit, space, etc. Knowing your bug out routes well to trim your gear as much as you can (so you only have what you will need rather than what you might need - which goes against the prepper's nature - is key) and, if necessary, having your gear at waypoints rather than on you the whole way will be helpful. Just doing things like noting all the water spots on your route so that you can not carry any water, but just a lifestraw can cut weight and bulk massively.

I even have to remind my boss that I’m still one of his employees. I’m an older guy, often dismissed by the new generation as not “woke” yet, and possibly a pushover if it came to it...but what they don’t realize, is I’m still in better physical shape than most, and whether it be the younger or older ladies, or a young buck who thinks he could easily push me around...if it came to it - they would all be very surprised. 😜👍

I don’t think an angry mob will not notice an object that’s trying to blend in with a church group. I think a gray man would not be open to dumb conversations or would have an opening into “cool” like behavior.

Grey man looks less of an option as time goes by. When SHTF, hungry and desperate people will attack you, regardless of how you wear. But by wearing tactical clothing and gear, you will seem like a harder target in the eyes of these desperate people.
