Ideally both, but water in the diff won't cost you like water in the engine...

Thank you very much for the compact information. When using the snorkel in less dusty conditions without pre-filter should the opening look to driving direction or backwards?

I dispute that ANY of these are essential. Most are a good idea - none are essential. Snorkel (even more so if it’s just an RAI) is a fashion accessory unless you are wading deeper water than manufacturers specified maximum for your vehicle. Suspension upgrades is not essential either. Plenty of capable Stock vehicles out there with no mods.

Also worth mentioning you don't need to waste coin on those stupid, overly wide, often illegal, mud terrain tyres targeted at tic tac dicks. A slightly taller and skinnier tyre any day, running at the correct pressure for the job at hand.
