The "Geiger counter" shown at 1:25 is actually not a Geiger counter, but in fact a CD V-715 Survey Meter because it uses an ion chamber. The CD V-700, however, is a Geiger counter because it uses a Geiger tube. I only said this to see it in next years mistake video I honestly don't care.

Yes! I have actually been there. I had to ring a bell at the house next to the church and was given a key, then I unlocked the big church door, turned on the light and heard the tone playing. Walking around the church I noticed how it sounds in its various corners and being there all by myself in the cool darkness filled by the tone by the longest playing organ ever was certainly quite the unique experience. I allowed myself to forget the time for a bit and some twenty minutes later locked the door again and returned the key. I can recommend it. Only a single tone? But it can also be like a brief meeting with eternity, with a timescale very different from that of our daily lives.

My dad actually was at this conference in Trossingen (I'm from Germany, he's an organist) and it was his idea. When they discussed which instrument(s) to use and they thought about an organ, he suggested you should have the song lasting a few weeks, months, or years. Then the others said, "Well that's a good idea!" But they made it even longer.

The audience was so confused.

@@fish3977 I agree with that. I think the other interesting part is that the audience has the expectation for the musician to play. Therefore during each set there builds a tension and the room is pretty quiet, you just hear the audience occasionally. Only during the breaks you realize how loud the audience can be without talking or doing anything specifically noisy. The people just cough, adjust their position and such things. I think the other part of 4'33 wich is art is that it makes you listen to the audience or which noises there are besides the musical instrument.

My favorite story of John Cage was him meeting with the visual Avante garde madlad Jackson Pollock. Pollock was an admirer and showed Cage his process, saying he was trying to do what Cage was doing. Cage flew into a rage upon seeing him work, exceptionally infuriated by the comparison, and denounced him as a hack who put no thought or effort into understanding his own work or the nature of randomness.

What about the LongPlayer and it's piece of music? "Longplayer is a one thousand year long musical composition. It began playing at midnight on the 31st of December 1999, and will continue to play without repetition until the last moment of 2999, at which point it will complete its cycle and begin again. Conceived and composed by Jem Finer."

@@autonomouscollective2599 @shaak is technically correct. F dim would have F, Ab, B, D - enharmonically (ie the same as) also E# g# b - the notes we heard in the chord played in the video, so yes, an F dim.

luke stevenson I’ll admit music theory is not my strong suit. You’ll have to school me here. The chord played has E, not E#. Are you saying it’s not E major?
@lukeedy
@lukeedy 3 жыл бұрын
@@autonomouscollective2599 to my ear there is no E played in the chord. Its an E# (or F). Thats the hilarious issue ahah. HaI placed their trust in a sound engineer which may have messed up the chord :) I honestly scrolled back through the comments to see whether anyone else had noticed (as im not normally the comment type). I am a musician however with perfect pitch so this is one area I can weight in on :)

"4'33" is not about the musician, but the place the piece is played. It's about all the sounds outside of a musical performance, not about the silence of the musician. When I finally understood that concept, I found the idea very intriguing. That's also around the time I started getting into avant garde art and dadaism, and not coincidentally, when my friends started getting annoyed at me during casual conversations.
