ever single detail in the movie feels super intentional, the only cell phone is Ted's flip phone, every single poster we see in the background is a joke based around Jeff and or football, Josies speech at the first club eating is a rough retelling of the hunger games, the test that brittney invites PJ over to study for is mr g's "woman murdered in history text", the porno mag mr g is reading is called "divorced and happy" the whole movie is a masterclass on unobtrusive worldbuilding.

28 year old lesbian here! This movie is the over the top early/mid-2000s sapphic-campy-fun-romcom of my teenage DREAMS!!! GOD I wish this movie existed back when I was still in high school! I'm glad it exists as it does now, but MAN I wish I could've seen it as a high schooler! I loved the movies Mean Girls, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Ferris Beueller, and all those essential HS teen movies, and I would've been IN LOVE with this one!!! ESPECIALLY since I could see myself on the screen for once too! (The representation would've made me feel better about myself) This movie is SO FUN and I LOVE IT!!! (edit, spelling lol)

That is true but I think that’s part of the point in Bottoms because a lot of the characters are just incredibly mean to one another lol. Also Rachel Sennott (the actress who plays PJ) co-wrote it and her character gets clowned on a lot, I think it’s just meant to be the style of humor.

I wouldn't even call it a trope in as much as hollywood's toxic beauty standards. it's not storytelling based at all. like i've heard people talk about it also reflecting how self image issues don't have to be reflected in 'reality', which is fine and I'm glad if it had that meaning to them but we know why it happens and it happens because of industry executives and producers.

Bottoms is probably my favorite movie of this year and of the past several years. I feel like it was made specifically for me. Gay, high school movie, absolutely absurd, raunchy but without actually being that raunchy/no nudity, all the tropes, and Ayo Edebiri. My other favorite movie of the year is Polite Society, made by Nida Manzoor who also created the show We Are Lady Parts. Highly recommend her work, it's so good.

@@christabellille4828 they keep their boxing champ in a cage, the football players are in their uniforms/pads 24/7, they have a violent rivalry with another school where the tradition is that someone gets killed at every football game between them, their teacher reads porn mags in front of the students, the girls openly sell used underwear to creepy old men as a fundraiser for their club and nobody acts like that's not normal...lots of examples of completely bonkers things that are just accepted as parts of the reality of the world of the movie.

This movie has really embedded itself in my brain. I love it so much! You usually get this with more psychological thrillers or dramas, but every time you watch Bottoms you notice something new in the background. I did NOT notice the mascot until the second watch of that movie hahahaha!! It's not like they hid it either, he is in multiple scenes in the back but I was too focused elsewhere hahaha

Yoo this movie gave me life. It's sooo ridiculous but I absolutely love how off the rails it is. Some of it, is believable until we get to the classroom with the kid in the cage and it just escalates from there. I see this becoming a cult classic like Mean Girls. Miles Fowler was a standout ad the second in command eager to please Gretchen type. My headcanon is the casting folks/ directors told him, "Look, you're playing the also-ran snoop of the group" and he just sprinted with it.

I didn’t even expect you to review this movie but I’m so ready for it. Bottoms is one of my top 10s for 2023 ( though honestly it’s about to be top 5 cuz most of the stuff that has come out in theatres year has been trash) I only wish it got more attention and more love in theatres, because we need more original creative media like this.

I was so excited you were talking about this movie cause more need people need to talk about it, it's a Camp Masterpiece for the Girls ,Gays and Theys. Also, Ayo, Rachel, and Emma will ALWAYS BE FAMOUS!!! And the cast was top tier!! ( Plus Mashawyn Lynch and Ruby Cruiz were definitely the standouts!!!)
